I wonder if we could organize a GP for something like that (With some ribbon tweeters i'd imagine) 🙂

I'm sure you could. You'ld have to talk to Bob Riemer at www.creativesound.ca . He is thinking of designing some line arrays with the Extremis from 4 to 12 drivers per side.

The Extremis retails for $125 ea CDN so even with a discount they would be very expensive.

Hi folks, sorry I haven't posted much in the way of impressions from the meet... when I got home on Saturday night my PC was dead 😱 along with all my personal data (inlcuding work on the crossovers for the speakers we didnt get to listen to 😡 )

Suffice it to say that it was a great meet and much was learned and heard by yours truly. I will post more detailed comments when I'm not on a public computer. Thanks again to Chris!

Tears for your computer Morbo, I got the lunchbox because my previous computer self destructed twice in one month. After spending a week restoring everything the first time, the real problem became known and it croaked again. The second time I wanted to tie it to my trailer hitch and drive around the block. Two hard drives now and mirrored data!

Oh I'm not looking fwd to giving up that manger, it has a way with fine recordings. We were tweaking and testing yesterday, it gets very good if crossed over at 800Hz, and the TL box really does do 25Hz.

I was thinking that 30 of the Hi-Vi B3S per side would go floor to ceiling and at C$11.83/each is around $800.00, some wood and wire....

OK, at the opposite end of the spectrum to get a feeling for line arrays, Parts Express has a 4" full range driver for $0.49 and tweeters for around the same price. Let's see, if we used 12 woofs and 12 tweets that would be $25 in drivers for a floor to ceiling arrangement, just to get a taste of Line Arrays.

The 4" drivers are the http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=269-568

Take a good look at the response wothout the phase shield!!!
Any adventurous types?

Looks like the meet was lots of fun!

Graham, I've followed the development of your speakers - seem to be very impressive! I'm in the process of creating a 14' X 24' dedicated theater in my basement and am shopping around for an outstanding set of DIY speakers that will be driven by some DIY Aleph-Xs. The Extremis that you and Jon developed looks like a contender... You mentioned that you drove the Bryston into clipping. Do they need lots of power in order to reproduce solid bass, or do they perform well at low volume too? I built a pair of Tony Gee's HATT speakers and find that they are bass shy at lower volumes, but sound excellent otherwise.

Fred's speakers look very interesting - I've been contemplating building a pair of ribbons. Does anyone have any details on the construction of these speakers or know if he's written up a web page on them?

Thanks!
Eric

Hi Eric,

Thanks for following the project. I have a sticky over at HTG where I am putting together the details of the project.

They are not as inefficient as you might think. They output continues to double as power doubles because the BL curve is very linear. I have no problem powering them with 50 W amps. With 100 W you'll get to Xmax pretty quickly, but they wont sound strained.

I listen to them everyday and they bring a smile to my face. They were worth every penny. I wish I could afford to do a whole HT with them. They are very clear and detailed.

Let me know if you have questions. Beautiful HATTs BTW.
