Mav and shipping and zoom lens
😉 I think you make some good points Mav about Alan getting my lens (should be in today) I would like to have had quicker but the earth won't stop spinning because I am anxious. I too would like Alan to find out about a lens to increase the throw distance.......I would love to see some pics of your enclosure.....sounds interesting!!!

Re: Mav and shipping and zoom lens
My custom enclosure is almost done but it don't look as good as I wanted it to be b/c the only available tool I had was a hand saw (took forever to cut the wood) lol. Its very similar to diylabs MK I design. I will post up pics very soon!
Seems like only a few ppl are making/buying enclosures.

My "diy project goal" if you will for this month is to buy a radial ram saw. I sugest any one who has the room buy one (used for about $60-$100) becuse you can make perfect cuts of wood.
I agree with the notion to buy a radial arm saw. If there's one tool that would make this project easier, then that would be the radial. I actually don't have one - I have to use a table saw and a compoud miter, but my grandfather has a radial arm saw and I love that thing!
The MkII I've been building is finally 90% complete. I turned it on last night for a first test run, and guess what guys ... I could clearly see the video with all of the lights on in the room - that kind of gives you chills doesn't it... anyways, I can't post pictures yet because I made a huge error and put everything in the enclosure going the wrong direction. Once you build the enclosure, it looks like it's a cube, but it's actually not so make sure you're measuring everything from the correct sides
! I also have the wrong metal halide bulb in there right now - it's a 3,000k lamp and these really need to be 4,000k or higher to make the image look clean and crisp. I should have the correct bulb and the enclosure fixed by the end of the week - I can't wait!

That is pretty exciting! How big was the image, and from how far away was it projected?
For my PJ I think I am going to have to wait until some more people are working with throw extenders (zoom lenses?) to keep the image size down across the 25 feet I need to project my image.
CB.

CB, The image was from about 8 feet away and the projection size was about 60". Tonight I'll try again using the bulb that I sell on my website, which has a better color temperature than the one I tried the other night. I should be posting pictures pretty soon (maybe tonight?)
As far as zooming is concerned, I bought a convex and a concave lens from www.surplusshed.com to try building a simple zoom setup so that I could shrink the size of the image from far away. I've never done anything like this before, but I see no reason why this 3-lens system shouldn't work. I'll have the triplet first, then the concave, then the convex lens, if I'm understanding this correctly. I'll post my findings about that, too, but that will probably take longer since I have to build 2 more lens mounts for that.

Alan,
It's comforting to know that you are working on this (the zoom) yourself. I have yet to build my first non-OHP setup so the MkII is looking pretty good to me right now.
Not too sure when I might have enough cash to order the whole set of parts so probably going to try to get em a few pieces at a time. Starting with that new fresnel you got.
Keep us posted on that Zoom system.

CB, I tried the zoom system last night, but what I found is that I could only make the image larger with the lenses I have, regardless of what order I use them in. I think that maybe I need 2 concave lenses and the triplet lens between them in order to shrink the image at all. I'll order another concave lens soon and post my results (probably in a new thread).
I've been using a soup ladle reflector idea that I borrowed from someone else a while ago. It works well to increase the output, but I have a word of caution to people about safety. Keep your hands away from the bulb while it's on. I was dumb and tried to adjust my reflector after the system had been on for only 2 minutes or so and nearly singed my fingerprints off trying to do that. Well maybe it wasn't quite that bad, but just be careful!

Well...
If you want to adjust the reflector, wear some gloves!
diylabs shipment
As promised I am reporting on the delivery of a triplett lens I purchased from Alan and how it arrived. First of all the packing was as well done as could be expected. The lens was wrapped in tissue paper and then overwrapped in kraft paper for padding in the appropriate box. The lens arrived with no damage and looks perfect. The time from order to delivery was a little long but considering that Alan is not operating a shipping operation as large as the one I direct it was very acceptable. Nice job Alan, if you ever need a job look me up I let you manage a department here anytime.
Now for the meat of the manner, putting the lens in use, let me explain that my box is an adaptation of the one that is listed in the links area of DIYlabs using a 400 watt MH bulb with a mogul base using a craptastic 640X480 projection panel I had used the original optic from the OHP ( a meniscus lens), acceptable but was a little fuzzy for my eyes. I then tried a double convex lens and while the center was sharp the corners were blurry, better but still not tripping my trigger for all the work I had done.
Triplett lens in and kiss my skinny butt but WOW!!!! This looks great. The lens is fantastic and I am more then pleased. Only drawback is that it looks so good I now have to buy and disect an LCD display (local shop has the viewsonic vg150 for a good price) because I want that little bit more.
That being said I will finish with....Thanks Alan you have a customer in me and keep up the good work. I will need that new fresnel and split it as I have read in the other threads so you will hear from me very soon!!!

Yea, you are probably a great shipper, but...will you go to alans warehouse? Or do you have enough room for storage.
If he was offering this job, I would gladly do it since I have a huge basement with over 15 pallets on the floor. I myself would start a business but cant seem to find a place to buy the merchandise.
Also, about the tripplett lens, I have one that is from a elmo OHP, but the center is sharp while the sides are blurry.
a job for Negative
😎 Negative come to Ohio and you got a deal.....or let me know where you are exactly and I'll recommend you we have plants all over the world!! Warehouse space is not a problem here we measure it in the thousands of spaces.
I am going to pickup the viewsonic tonight so I will start the tearing down operation immediately. As a question to negative have you heard or read, do most people end up putting the bare LCD on a piece of plexi to hold all in place?
I looked very hard at he corners of my projection and they are very crisp, I can't stress enough that the lens was a great improvement.

Re: a job for Negative
UH...Imma answer that question!
First of all, most ppl put the bare lcd on the stage glass of a OHP and some also put a piece on top of the lcd. But since the split fresnel has started, ppl have been putting the lcd right on top of the split fresnel.

wow that lens sounds really great! many ppl tell me its amazing i cant wait to get one 🙂
well most ppl that i speak to just put their LCDs on the stage, the more cautious ones build enclosures for their LCD and some use external fans.the only only person that i know off whos using plexi is VM, thanx to HQi i dont think i'll be needing external fans.
oh, and i live in Brooklyn, Nyc 11237(computer job would be good too )

Glad to hear you received your kit in satisfactory time/condition. Don't worry about emailing me questions or suggestions - I love getting them! In fact, I answer over 120 emails each week about all aspects of the DIY projector. I encourage people to ask each other questions, but I'll also be making a FAQ for the website soon since there are quite a few common questions. These include comparing different types of light sources and projection lenses as well as how to improve the quality of projection on with existing setup.
Thanks again for the good feedback! I'm glad I could be of help!!

I ordered a fresnel from this guy a while ago. It came fairly late (not too bad though, I err..borrowed..one from the school in the meantime, hehe) and he also refunded me some of my money because of the wait. He's a good true businessman, I would buy from him again with confidence.
12.2" fresnel lenses
Hi everyone! The fresnel lenses will be shippout at all throughout next week. I'm sorry for the delay, but I have never ordered from this manufacturer before, so I wasn't aware that it takes them 14 days just to get the order ready for shipping.
All US orders will be shipped with 2-3 day priority mail to ensure that they get to you as soon as possible. Please email me if you have any questions. Thanks!
Regards,
Alan, DIY Labs
