Lenses, lenses, lenses ...

🙂 ok Alan we all read the good and positive posts dealing with your shipping time and how you pack.....well..... I just ordered the triplett lens from you. I believe I am a pretty good source of information on how you do as I am a Distribution Director for one of the oldest and largest companies in the world ... If all goes well I will report as such if all goes bad well you know the routine.

Spocktwin, I shall do my best. My most recent shipment of those lenses came in on Monday, so I should be shipping all triplet orders within the next 12-24 hours. I'll do my best! If you have any preferance as to whether I use crumpled paper or liquid expanding foam for packging, please let me know - I'll put insurance on the package either way.

hey Alan,

i'd liek to know if i can use your triplets in my OHP my OHP has a crappy singlet lens, maybe you have tried this before or anything.

Thanks.

Negative Design, retrofitting your OHP with a triplet will DEFINITELY improve the quality of your image by far. I used to have a doublet OHP and then upgraded to the triplet. Even then I noticed improvements in the image quality (i.e. sharpness and depth - image looks more natural). A singlet or meniscus lens simply cannot reprodce an image from our LCD panels as accurately as a triplet lens can, and I believe fullheartedly that my lens triplets are the absolute best you can buy - every bit as good as the $100 triplets that 3m sells as replacements for their top of the line OHPs.

Alan, I was wondering if you could find a longer focal lenght triplet. The ones from my Dukanes are 327mm, I know the 3M 9700 and 9800 use a 342mm fl, looks like the same exact lens as mine and the one you sell. I think the triplets top out at 345mm fl
like the one the 3m 9850 uses. These things have to be all made by the same company, they look exactly the same. The short throw distace with a 15" lcd is one of the major draw backs
that I can see, and I have heard a few other talking about this as well.

Longer focal length triplets

I'll definitely look into longer focal lengths. The reason I chose the shorter focal length was because I was originally using an inefficient setup and was trying to get as much light out of the system as possible, but now that others have improved the designs so much, I agree that a longer FL triplet would be nice. I'm also working on building an inexpensive zoom lens out of the triplet and a couple lenses from www.surplusshed.com. I've never done this before, so I only have a basic understanding, but I'll be sure to report my findings as soon as possible.

I'd appreciate it if people could email me at diylabs@hotmail.com if they would be interested in a 345mm FL triplet instead of the 317mm FL triplet. If there is enough demand (at least 8-10 people), then I'll start ordering the longer FL lenses from now on. Thank you for letting me know that you're interested in this - I'd have never known without your feedback.

I'll be adding a feedback page to www.diylabs.org soon so that it will be much easier to recommend new parts or services. I really appreciate everyone's help in making DIY Labs as good as can be. Thanks!

Alan, thanks but please do it as you normally ship things....hey use the kraft paper and then I would be happy to let you know how it does.....frankly we use a lot of the same to ship some of our material and we have little or no complaints. I kind of wanted to do this because I sometimes have to deal with our customers making negative comments but did not deal directly with me to fix it. I think you run a good website that is useful to us all and helps promote the DIY process......

Negative please don't take the above comments wrong, what you commented on is important and needs to be put out there for all of us to act on and in this case help DIYlabs get better at what they do. I have read alot from you and others in this forum and your advice and comments are priceless, I wish more of my companies customers would do the same....sometimes they just walk away when the problem could have been fixed with a phone call or email.....thanks

Re: Update Time Stamps

I moved that to the bottom right corner of the page, but I can put it up top if you like. Let me know where you think would be best to put it. I think I'm going to put an update time stamp on every page because some of the instructions have had their graphics updated to represent the scale more accurately. Thanks for letting me know guys!

I'll make the timestamp a lighter gray or white and I also might put it at the top of the screen as well. As I said before, I'll slowly start adding timestamps at the bottom of every page - FrontPage will update the time stamp for me automatically as I update pages.

The MkII enclosure that I've been working on is basically complete, so you guys can expect some pics by the end of the week, finally. The brightness is great without a panel, but I haven't put a panel on it yet. Also, if you're building one of the MkII's, it seems that maybe the fresnel needs to be closer to the light source than I had originall expected. I'll update this info as I figure it out.

Shipping....

Just to weight in...

I have always received my stuff from Alan in very good condition.

Though past shipping has been long, he has always answered me. (Hint: he does not hide from an unpleasent situation, but will try to rectifiy it.)

I believe that he started with little moola, but is improving the business as he has the ability....he's just like us...anything he discovers out there benefits us and provides us more choices.

My projector is basically a redesign of his MK I plans. I am waiting for my new fresnel, as it will give me more room inside the enclosure to try the split fresnel idea with the 2 inch spacing on each side.

Alan, I would love to see a zoom lense as my living room is narrow and the short throw tripet has worked for me. A zoom would give me more flex though.

I am also making a enclosure similar to diylabs MK I plans, however, I am not done yet until I purchase his fresnel and light kit. But I will post up pics later when I am finished.

It consists of a NEC 1545V lcd, the new fresnel from diylabs (split), and a triplet lens from a elmo OHP. The outer dimensions of the enclosure is about 24" tall by 15" wide and 11" deep.

enclosure dims

Mine is considerably larger as I wanted room to experiment. Internal dims are 18"x18"x30".

I have only the orignal fresnel. I have not tried the split yet as my 1545 is mounted to a light tube (tunnel) so I would have room to mount the electronics to the top of the tube. There is no way to get a frensel between the lcd and objective lens ( not so it would have enough room to cone the light within the objective's focal length). I will need to redesign the lcd module.
