DIY Class A/B Amp The "Wolverine" build thread

My one week update! On to capacitors now.

Just want to say theses PCB's are by far the BEST I have worked with, solderability is amazing and the carefully thought out layout, spacing and sizing! WOW you guys did an amazing job. Oh and silk screen component ID's on the bottom layer was a great idea too.

Thanks

This is awesome, just starting my build now! Just finished my second badger litterly friday night!

Just wanna say thanks to the Wolverine team you guys did a amazing job and it is just going to get better from here on out! ... why do people always have to complain and talk crap? bunch of keyboard warriors bit$%ing cause they can't just get something when they want it or even free at that. Alot of blood sweat and tears goes into R and D of any project and people never appreciate it the way they should, they feel they are owed things! Can't wait to see where this journey goes ! H badger been going since what 2012?

Question(s) for you all:

I know the Wolverine was tested using just a C-filter supply (transformer->rectifiers->10,000uF caps per rail->amp), but I noticed some plan CRC supplies. Would this amp benefit from the reduced ripple (what's the ripple rejection like?) or is CRC for this amp just "gilding the lily" (which is fine)?

Your transistor matcher board has arrived -- I can't wait to start populating it! Any chance you've uncovered a BOM for the board? It seems the BOM is no longer available on the original thread (the dropbox link is broken). The schematic provides guidance on most but not all of the components.

Many thanks,
Scott

Progressing along nicely, waiting on the transistor matcher mentioned earlier in the thread to match the small signal transistors. I used a Heathkit IM-18 to match the outputs. I'm using MJL21193/MJL21194 outputs. I am curious, the MJL21193 PNP's measured 89-90 for the eight I am using, the MJL21194 NPN's measured 39-43 for the eight I am using. Is this normal to have one of the complements about half the beta of the other set? I bought two sets of resistors as above and they were fairly different, .5ohms for one set, .42 for the other set. I installed the .5's on the PNP's and the .42's on the NPN's.

Woa those npn's hfe are running a bit low. They'll be even lower at high current. Only the mje15032/33 or mje15034/35 will be able to drive those.

Jeremy

Hi RickRay,
Jeremy and I have discussed your post above. The amp was designed for output transistors that have a minimum of hfe 70. Hopefully the new transistors that you have ordered are in that range. Let us know the outcome as you might need to use the other types listed in the BOM.

I just ordered a new set from Mouser. I think these are genuine, but like you said, way low.

I think we're going to take the MJL21193/94 off the BOM because of their hfe range, they are slower too. We simmed with them with no issues but no one has tried them yet so if you want to be the guinea pig be prepared. You're still welcome to try them but you will have to buy a lot to get in the upper hfe range for that part so yield will probably be low. I see you got EF3-4 (4 pair) which is good because if you use those outputs you'll have to mount the drivers to main heatsink for them to stay cool enough. If you want a high SOA replacement use the MJL4281/MJL4302.

Looking good Rick.

Please refer to post #95...

Also.
1. Are you not planning on running mica caps.
2. Watch your creepage of your bolt heads. Please use a plastic washer or a socket head cap screw
