Cool this thread re-appears. I have yesterday Build a power-supply 5V and 12V for a cd-rom and attached it to my stereo having 3 cd players plus this computer cd rom i have to say that the computer cd rom sounds best.. Only fed audio with left and right output at the cd into a tube pre-amp to a tube power amp with my new speakers it sounds better than a store bought cd player.. So far.

Now i want to build a dac the something that can pause the cd player and maybe a small buffer to up the cd-roms out put a little. It's kinda weak on the output..

BTW, I have add remote function to my cd-rom player (using RC5 decode)

I'm planning on building a transport, and was thinking of using a gutted NEC 602 in the case below donated from my old AA transport. Don't know of a newer IDE-based CD-ROM drive that I could gut and use - anyone know? The NEC has that nice solid metal chassis. It is that or a Philips CD-PRO2, but they're so so expensive. Problem with the NEC is the display board (too small for my application and not enough information for me, like track number, etc). Take a look at the pics and I'd love some advice! The box is perfect for a top-loader, and has internal metal shielding around some of the boards. The controller board and display board were in one box, and the mechanism in another.

It is SCSI, and is well built and suited for a CD transport, but the display that it has (both size and the information) are poor for CD use.

If you accept that whatever route you take some additional electronics will be required, then you might as well stick with the '602 and channel the effort into adding a better display. That the information is already there is shown by the limited display it has. It is just that NEC chose not to display it. The subcode data that carries all the disc information is available from the cdrom controller, either directly or embedded in the SPDIF datastream.

rfbrw,

Would you know if the CD text info. embedded in the SPDIF data?

Cheers,

John

I'll have to look it up to confirm but it depends where the text is encoded. Some of it is accessible through the P-W subcode but I think the larger CD Text region requires a controller with CD Text capability.

Hi guys.

im sorry for spamming here, but i'm on a dail up and dont want to have to go through the whole thread, damn long realy, and so i was wondering if someone who's been following it could give me a litle rub-down on whats been cooked up here on pcb's, part lists and microcontroller programs..

just a line or three..

I'd really appreciate it!

Well as i listen to this cd player more and more i like it a-lot. My only problem is i cant tell what track i'm on or pause ir ot skip back only forward and play. Im wondering what my steps are ( im on a mac but have access to a pc and a programer maybe ) to get a display to work on this ide cd rom with out killing the sound from the audio out port. i can build every thing with no problems just need the path to follow..

I have a Optrex red display brand new just dim.

Model number is C-51505 Tm005 If pictures are needed i can provide them..
