DIY anamorphic lens

Could someone please post photos of the worst of these reflections ???... TIA

Are they sharply defined (if somewhat dimmer), or are they just blurred points of light/streaks etc ?

I will definitely try this, and thanks to everyone for this awesome thread 😎

That's good news DB. It would be great if they can be treated for around $40 - $50

OK, here's a pic of the reflections. They aren't THAT clear(shaky hand) but you CAN see the text.

How large are these completed assemblies? I looked at the CAVX diagram on Mark's homepage, and the height and width are listed (200mm and 175mm respectively), but what is the distance from the back to the front? I realize that this will depend on the angle and size of the prisms and if it is a 2 or 4 prism setup. I have a large projection lens, and am not sure if I will be able to fit everything close enough.
Let me know if this has already been discussed, and I'll read back through. (I read pages 60-110 last night- so may have missed it)

Thanks, Bud!
Now I see now what you mean .. yikes, the first photo is kinda off-putting, but the second is truly stunning.. and I guess the reflections are fleeting for the most part anyway

I guess having the anti-reflective treatment done ( if affordable) will stop this artifact permanently

So no one answered my question about polarizing. What if an polarized element was placed between the primary lens (projector lens ) ans the rear prisms. This way the light from the projector is polarized...

That screen shot from CARS just rocks Bud, Ka-CHOW indeed!!!

Your right about the shaky hand with the other shots though 🙂

I tried to take shots of the reflections, but I don't get them as bad or close the main image as you have documented. My side reflection is at 90 degree to the screen so, on the side wall.

All the dimensions are listed on my diagram. The Aussiemorphic Lens is 200mm (wide) x 200mm (deep) x 175mm (high) made from 16mm MDF and the angle is 45 degrees so that cut away section is 80mm on both sides...

The two prisms are 170mm (HYP) x 140mm at about 15 degrees...

Would you loose light output going through a polarizer? I did a quick search on edmundoptics.com and it looks like the polarizing glass and film are a grey color. I also spoke to a photographer friend here at work and he said you loose 2 F-stops using a polarizing filter. What that equates to pj lumens I don't know.

I'm going to see if I can borrow a photography polarizing lens for the weekend and give it a try.

Andy

Yeah, sure brag about your lumens 😉
But I only have 1100 lumens 🙄

I was thinking the same thing about the better blacks. It might be the same as putting on an ND filter. Anyways, you can get polarizing filters at any good photography store like Ritz Camera (do you have Ritz in Aussie land?)

Andy

Putting a polarizer anywhere but at the end may not work so well, unless it is just before the last prism. I don't see why you would put it anywhere but after all the prisms. Polarizing the light before it goes in the prisms or lens is not usefull. Don't forget the light coming out of an LCD projector is already polarized. Once it bounces off the prism face, that light is no longer polarized and will be causing the problems. I am not sure exactly what you mean though, so maybe if you explained it better I would understand what effect it would have. It is the bouncing back and forth off the prism faces that causes you to need a polarizer in the end.

Anyhow, until somebody tries it, we won't know. I will look around for places that may carry a peice of polarized glass.

Ok thanks for the explaination. I guess the "green streaking" is just something I will have to live with...

In regards to the ND filters, is that what that clip in thing that came with my first projector is? The lastest one has this as an electric switch in / switch out device. It makes the image look pinkish brown which SONY claims is correct as D6500K - NOT!!! GREY is equal amounts of RGB, not pushing Red levels to the extreme...

Polarizers

The DIY projector community at LumenLab has been looking into polarizing films, as these are a part of LCD monitors which can become damaged during certain stripping operations. This thread has a rundown of types of polarization films and sources with pricing information. That info may be helpful here for those looking to experiment.

I've been outta the loop for a while and just scanned the posts. I see that reflections are pretty much the topic lately. Here is a source for anti-reflective glass and the sizes may be good for in-between the prisms.

Topic page: Edmund Optics

And more specifically: Glass Page

These might help. Edmund has a lot of optical stuff.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Did anyone notice that this is actually an anamorphic lens?

Mark

Ya, but they are TINY in size. Too small for our need as lenses. I looked at that a while back since I 'm on their mailing list.
BTW, just replaced the housing & the CARS credits are still NASTY. Oh well, such is life. No one really watches the credits anyways...
Hey Mark, have YOU tried the credits? Let's see some screen shots...i'm going to try to take a few more today(have my tripod out from the wedding I went to yesterday).

Bud,

HERE are some screen shots I took the other week when I was trying to document the green streaks I see from time to time....and there are none to be seen. I would have thought that "dinner will be served" would have been really bad...

No Mark...the END scrolling credits...let's see those ones. I went back to my original housing but already had modified it like yours. Going to build another one without the mod, should help the ghosting.

Trial & error.

Yeah, I was all excited about them until I read the size 😀

I initially hoped that Edmunds would have prisms like the trophy ones. I was surprised that they really don't have anything useful for our purpose here.

Well, I borrowed a photography polarizing filter for the weekend. I tried with my AE900 and really didn't see an improvement. Any stray glare didn't really go away. It just got dimmer because of the light loss through the filter. I tried in front of pj lens, in-between prisms, and after prisms. No luck. 🙁
The light loss didn't make me a big fan of this filter either.

I noticed in the link p_su posted they mentioned circular vs. linear polarizing. I think this was a circular polarizing filter. That might be something to factor in my results.

I did see the polarizing film mentioned on the Lumens forum on the Edmunds website. Anybody wanna give that a try?
