Great photo's, thanks for sharing... now I wonder the size of each of the wedges... could I bother you to measure thouse? Might have to order me some of the smaller ones...
Budd you still have the small ones working eh?
(Budd, we've got to get together! In-laws are gone and your intro is ready 🙂 )

Some more question...
Yeah thanks for the pics.
It looks old based on the prisms case castings. Do you know what year it was made, or who made it?
I can see the chip you were referring to in the front prism - a real shame. Cab you still use it or does it affect the image?
Please measure and post the prisms sizes as well as the distances between them. Could you replace those prisms with the J series prisms?
Awesome device

Dang, that is a sweet lens setup. Any mechanical engineers out there that can duplicate it? I'm handy but that may be outta my league.
The whole thing measure 5.5" x 8"
The Distance from the front Prisim to the Back Prisim is 2.5"
None of the J series will fit in this thing

Totally off topic, as usual...I recently re-mounted my lenses in a straight housing and the reflections i'm getting are HORRIBLE(the credits from CARS is brutal!)! I think i'll go back to the tapered one I was using. I tried to taks pictures of the image between the lenses but it really doesn't show too well. On the straight box, the first lens near the PJ reflects (looking from front to back(PJ) on the right wall, then this image is reflected thru the front(second) prism as a ghost image. The tapered housing doesn't have the same wall angle as the straight one so the reflection isn't intense. Painted insides & trying to absorbe reflections...
Just letting you know.

No, if we're talking about our prisms based DIY lenses, we're actually back on topic 😀

Did you try the cut away side like mine?

Very interesting Bud. I'm quite happy with the size and shape of the
"Aussiemorphic Lens". It seems to work with minimal reflections...

Actually I did...causing more problems...I get MORE reflection off to the right side now from the front lens facing right. Like I said, i'll go back to the tapered one & see. I think the reflection problem is magnified because we're using such large lenses & the space between. I checked the size of the light beam from the last prism & THINK I could get away with using the small J24 prisms. Of course, I don't HAVE 4 of those but maybe i'll get a couple more & try it out some time. I went with just securing the prisms in the housing & set up a track to move it out of the way. Simpl & easy for now. I just want to start WATCHING movies.

Hey Bud,
Just thought of this... What about lining the inside of the housing with black velvet? It's used to mask the screen edge and soak up light spill there; why not inside the housing?
One drawback I can think of though is it might act like a dust collector. But if the housing is sealed it may not be too bad.

Unfortunatly, the housing isn't sealed. I will try something like that tho. I think the tapered housing(since i'm presently using a small & a medium lens) seems to work better because the sides aren't acute angles to the prisms, so the reflections don't reflect the same. I was watching the CARS credits inside the housing last night...there were 2 sets. 1 from the first prism reflecting on the side wall, 1 reflecting off the 2nd prism face back onto the side wall.
OH well, that's what DIY is all about...trial & error, if a first, yada, yada, yada!

Green Streaks?
Isn't it interesting? I wanted to watch The Da Vinci Code the other day, and the "green streaks" were right across the screen. It was the worst I had ever seem them in over a year of DIY lens development.
I removed the lens, and repositioned it - nothing they were still there. I flipped the lens upside down - again nothing, still there...
I ripped it out again, replaced it and the green streaks were gone and have not come back (except for the very faint ones on the far left) since...

Re: Green Streaks?
Mark, have you tried(do you HAVE) CARS and watched the end credits? THERE'S nasty reflection! White scrolling text for several minutes. NASTY!
Bud
Ya, I had the same...dipped into my "spare" lenses thet ROAR got me. Replaced 1 of the 4 and the CA cleared up...Funny, the same set worked fine before....GREMLINS!Mark Techer said:Isn't it interesting? Another DIY having hiccups?
Not any more than normal. The same stray reflections that a lot of us DIY guys are experiencing. Like I said, the stray reflections have diminished considerably since repositioning my prisms. But alas, they will still rear their ugly heads when I least expect it! Small price to pay for such an immense image... I really shouldn't complain!😀
Are these reflections you guys are getting on the walls, or on the screen? Can they completely eliminated by putting black velvet on all parts except the light entry and exit points? Thinking about picking up some prisms and trying this out.

The reflections on the wall can be controled/eliminated, We're discussing the screen reflections. For the most part, the one reflection which is difficult to remove is a BRIGHT image(THX LOGO) on a black background. Depending on the orientation of your prisms, the reflection will be on the far left or right. This image is minor and not very distracting, my recent problem is rolling white credits on black look the WHOLE screen has credits. This is a new problem which I can easily fix, go back to my previous housing.
My opinion is by all means, get some prisms & give it a try. The results are FANTASTIC! For a fraction of commercial lenses, you get anamorphic projection, what ever size you want, great picture. 1 small ghost image on black is hardly a deal breaker. Enjoy!

Re: Re: Green Streaks?
Yep, sure do (we got it befor you guys 🙂) and I tried to capture the green streaks by taking photos of the THX logo and the frenh rat preview on this disc. Go back a page or so to see the images. No green streak showed up...

AR Coatings
I called the company
http://www.evaporatedcoatings.com/index.htm
that was suggested and asked about having the prisms anti-reflective coated. I spoke to Pat (male) and he said usually it would be a batch price of about $800. I asked if perhaps an individual could have his 2 or 4 pieces put into another buyers batch and he seemed to be agreeable to that. I asked him to give me a guess at a price for that and gave him the sizes of the prisms. He said he would email me, but I have not heard yet. I am guessing/hoping no more than about 40 or 50 each.
I told him there could be quite a number of folks interested if he would do it.
