My experience is that walnut and oak stain well but Cherry does not. It could just be me. Cherry darkens so quickly and gets such a nice color I really prefer to not stain it. I recently milled a bunch of cherry crown molding - it was milled, sanded, finished with clear pre cat. lacquer and delivered in the same day. The house is only about 15 min. from the shop. I was surprised to see that the wood darkened on the way there...where the straps holding it on the truck where covering the wood it was noticeably lighter.
The sun quickly brings the oil to the surface, i frequently put finished cherry pieces out for a little suntan.
I've had clear coated cherry veneered speakers get some interesting shading / tan lines from sitting near a north facing window for a few years
If you dont want to change the color a whole lot.....you could use Birchwood Casey Gunstock Finish.
It adds a bit of amber tint similar to boiled linseed oil but adds a bit of protection.
I use spray lacquer over the top of danish oil all the time.
It works out really well.
If you are worried about splotching on cherry with dyes/stains then put down a light coat of dewaxed shellac on the bare wood prior to any oils or stains.

one fudge strawberry vanilla diffuser. finally got it done, I trimmed it down first. Its weighty, I broke the wall struggling to get it in place, (removing pin nail in wrong place) lol. I like how it turned out though also learned a couple things. it does help, one thing I notice straight away is lesser sibilance, cleaner clearer highs, I suspected thats one of the higher problem areas for bouncing waves making some smaller changes bigger cash ins on sound.
