DAC AD1862: Almost THT, I2S input, NOS, R-2R

Anyone needs AD1862 PCBs for the upcoming group buy, I have a few left. Two types - with shift registers and op-amps also some with JLSounds XMOS on board no OP stage for external IV stage.

I have enough shift registers and chip holders for two boards.

Plus a couple PCM63p boards.

Lots of stuff to clear out 🙂

As a break from talking about AD1862 🙂 - I recommend that those interested in the TDA1541 simultaneous mode try the CPLD module based on the @miro1360 idea. A very interesting and economical solution. I promised @miro1360 that I would write something with sound quality. I didn't notice any differences compared to e.g. i2soverUSB. It plays really well and greatly simplifies the entire connection and power supply system. Many thanks @miro1360

Nice work Paweł !

Speaking of the group buys, if anyone needs a USB->I2S which is also capable of driving NOS DACs like AD1862/TDA1541 etc lease have a look at this one:

I have non-isolated in stock, going to order version with galvanic isolation next week:

external masterclock is supported too.
Since there are many Miro's PCBs already produced with JLSound interface footprint, I was thinking maybe I should design a compatible version too. But I need to know if there is demand for it.

Tda1541 will be one of my next builds, yet I need to inform myself in what CPLD is. A reason to use CPLD instead of the "normal" asynchronous version for this DAC?
Thanks

Something else: I see significant drops in stock for AD1862 at Digikey (a few weeks ago, it went down by 10,000, now again by a few hundreds).
I would like to get some from this only official source. Is there any interest to get some by other EU folks? I could handle the order from Digikey and send for real cost + postage to EU countries.

I have 20 or 22 on the list to be ordered now. I am closing my offer for handling this now, will reconfirm with people who expressed they want to join and order tomorrow.

EDIT: not sure if Digikey/Rochester changed that lately, but now multiples of 12 need to be ordered.
So, we are at 20 or 22 as I wrote. This allows for someone to jump the train for 2 or 4.

Currently going through the ordering process. I need to confirm that I am not exporting the chips and by this confirm to US export regulations.
While it is not very likely that someone will come after me if I do, I do not want to take any chances.
I am having enough interest from Germany alone, so I will just order that batch.
My deepest apologies for disappointing you other folks.

EDIT: I see I have interest in 16 from Germany, which is now again over 12. I will wait until this afternoon if there is interest for 8 more to Germany to get 24 full. Otherwise I will order the 12.

A fine position to take. For what it's worth, the AD1862 is export classification EAR99, which is lowest level of concern and doesn't require a license but can't be sold to US-embargoed countries like NK, RU, and to suspected bad actors. When I have sold them I don't ship to embargoed countries, required payment through a bank or other channel that implements KYC, and limited volume to help ensure the buyer is an enthusiast, not a broker.

I finally finished Grunf/Michelag tube IV and I LOVE IT - I understand all exciting comments here now. To my ears this DAC competes with my vinyl setup!

I used a cheap Philips ECG Jan 6922 that you can get off ebay for $20 shipped. Inexpensive for testing and it's likely an original mid-grade tube. Now is the time for tube rolling baby 🙂 It's also time to play with resistors and caps and putting it all in a nice looking enclosure.

I also want to make the tube pcb thicker - the standard thikness is too flexible and bends when inserting a tube - maybe an additional mounting hole in the middle of pcb? Voltage in PSU goes up to 210-220V during power up and electrolytics in the BOM are 200V. I will replace them with higher voltage caps.

BIG thank you @miro1360 @grunf @Michelag

No I happened to have these Solen caps in the stash, waiting for years for a job to do. 4U7 is perfect for my needs here, I only have small speakers and system. They sound great.

Audiorado is sending a few Clarity Caps to try. I have read that certain types of resistor are better for certain positions in tube circuits, carbon films for grid or plate and such. Be interested in your findings. My 100R IV resistors are 0.1% Holco H8, also from the stash.

Good to have you on board 😉
