Since there is no Aussie distributer, Tangband will sell us a W3-871 for $US17.20. However shipping for two is $US51.50.
I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a couple, 'can't help it.

I can confirm the Needles work well with 871 with the filter.

I have 4 units of tangband 871, interested? see your email box.
I did a sim of the BS3 in the Needle, and low end looks less than with the tangband W3-871.
On the subject of the bsc: I personally prefer them with... I'll advise 0.56mH, 6.8 ohm, 6.8uF for the W3-871S

Thanks Henkjan. I'm buying ttan's four W3-871s. I'm thinking of building TABQAs for the second pair but am open for suggestions.
Power will be Sureelectronics 2*15 watt chip amps.
Cheers dudes
where to hide parts
I'm just about to start this for my kids room and join the Needles party. A bit late but still going strong I hope...
Question is where did everyone hide their parts for the filter? I think I'd like to stick it on the inside somewhere...
Lastly, I have a .6uH air core inductor but the recommended value is .56uH. Could I just remove a few coils (or add???) to get the value I need? But then by how much? Or is it okay to use the .6uH as is?

I put the filter at the bottom, just a bit of glue to keep it at its place
if you can measure the coil, just wind off a few windings to make it 0.56, or just give it a try, 0.6 is less than 10% difference from 0.56.. 90% chance it will sound just as good 😀

I screw the coil to the back of of the box behind the speaker so I can replace later by removing the driver.
Tangband W3-871S Discontinued?
Parts Express only shipped one W3-871S and when I called indicated that they would not receive any more to fill my backorder as Tang Band had discontinued production of these drivers.
As I only have one driver I either need to find another one through other sources, sell the one I have or return it to Parts Express.
My first choice would be to obtain one. Does anyone have one available? If not, does anyone want to purchase the one I have at cost plus shipping?

More/less or is this ok as stuffing? To my ears it sounds ok, I've removed more than half of what I've started with.
I hope its my amp (a crappy one), but there is not much detail in the sound.

Tuliman, this is exactly what I do with my Visaton Needles, remove half of stuffing, left about the same as in yours.
I notice too - too much stuffing eat details.

About to build these finally after much procrastinating! Will be using some HiVi B3S with no notch filter.
What sort of material should I use for the damping? How much should I use? I foresee it being difficult to add/remove damping once the sides have been glued on 🙁

Glue everything but one side, and clamp the last side when playing with stuffing. When stuffing is good, glue the final side.
I gutted a pillow for stuffing material.
if the additional price is OK, you could try the new Markaudio Alpair6 in the Needle, absolute top notch driver and according the simulation the best low end response of any 3" I've tried in the Needle (and I tried a lot). I have a pair waiting to go in a needle (need to find some time).chylld said:About to build these finally after much procrastinating! Will be using some HiVi B3S with no notch filter.
