For taps...take a look at the trading post. I still have a few left if you're quick. Do yourself a favour and don't buy the cheap tools at the DIY market(like home depot and the like), that goes for any tool, but especially tools for cutting metal like files, taps, drills and the like. They are bound to be a pain if they're not good quality.
Magura🙂
Thanks. I need to have a play and work out how they work and what else I'll need first though. This could get expensive if I have to start buying drills and stuff!
Hello,
Well this stayed active while I was aleep!!
Unhinged, i see your from the UK too, try here...
JA Crew
It's a bit of a randomly laid out site, but the stuff they keep is really good (eclipse taps etc) and stupidly cheap, just not that huge a range. But there should be plenty to build a case.
On the washers front, how about some little button type things like this....(see pic) which i designed to hold on the granite front for some speakers here...
summer project, with any luck and some funds....

Not really.
A set of good High Speed drills for thread will set you back around 10GBP and easily found locally, the taps im offering here are approx 17GBP including shipping. Then you need a file or two. They should be of the brand "pferd".
When shopping for tools like wrenches and the like, look for stahlwille. ITs fairly expensive, but lasts for ever. A second choice woould be sandvik, bacho or belzer.

I just looked through the link provided above for tools. It is not a place to buy anything. The price is high and the quality low. I know many of the tools they sell, take for instance the digital caliper they have as offer of the month. Its useless. The tolerances strays like ****.
I took a look at the taps and the drills as well, I wouldnt buy either there. All cutting tools must be backed up by a brandname. It is not something anyone can just go and start a production of. There are decades of experience behind companies like OSG, Fette, Pferd and Dormer.

Looks nice...got a pricerange as well....cause they too look very expensive 🙁
Magura🙂
ive order lotsa tooling from here before. yes they do have duds, but as far as taps go theyre fine. they dont say what brand they are because they could be presto, eclipse or whatever. its a surplus place so they cant be sure what brand they are going to have, but ive never had a problem with them. And for occasional 'hobby' use into aluminium, im sure they will be fine. It was just a suggestion, as stuff like this is pretty expensive over here, as is everything else 🙁

It *******ed up expensive here as well. A decent tap from like Fette or Dormer will set you back from 15GBP and up
Good files are also expensive, but cheaper and better in the long run.

The buttons or the speakers?
The buttons cost hardly anything if you machine yourself, plus there aren't too many attractive looking alternative ways of holding on a granite front.
The speakers are a joint project between three of us, yet to see if these make it off the drawing board hehe, 🙂

what?? The most expensive tap I could find there was £8.90 for M14, which you'd never need for these applications anyway.
Ahh i think i see how you worded that now....ive only just got up and bein a bit thick 🙁 So surely £8.90 is good value for M14, which stands a good chance of being dormer, or eclipse or presto or a similar high quality manufacturer.
Steve
Eclipse and presto are not in the top league...and actually not even close. A dormer would set you back a lot more than 8.50GBP, also in england. Naturally if you buy a lot of them (as in hundreds annually) you get them cheaper, but nowhere near 8GBP for M14

Dont get me wrong, the top manyfacturers make a cheaper line as well, im talking their top line. For good thread in aluminium, its sure worth it. I have surely bought my last el cheapo tap..or die for that kind of matter. ITs the same story with dies.

I fully agree you get what you pay for, for almost anything you can think of. Maybe its not a very linear relationship sometimes...(mainstream hifi comes to mind)
However i think there should be a line to draw, where things have to be done on a budget. its all well and good talking about ultimate tools, and yes one day when im not a poor student i would love to have a workshop full of dormer taps and snap-on tools everywhere etc, but at the moment that just isnt possible, and i rely on cheapy surpluss outlets such as that place to get the job done. Maybe in a production environment (I see you're a toolmaker by trade 🙂) it is worthwhile investing in the best quality tools. But for this application (being DIY aluminium case fabrication) i consider such brands as eclipse to be perfectly up to the job. you pays yer money you takes yer choice i guess.

This is what i mean...and i guarantee you that they dont come for 8GBP anywhere
I thought those spiral fluted taps were more suited to machine tapping, such as in a machining center or something? Pretty though 🙂
Steve
Thats why I offered the taps for sale on the trading post...actually to be nice. Its not like i cant sell them locally for that price 😀
I wanted to give people here a chance to get some good tools for reasonable money. I bought 500 taps surpluss to get some myself for reasonable money, and intended to sell the rest to frinds and aquaintances here and there.
MAgura🙂

The bigger sizes>M5 are nice for manual cutting as well, makes good thread cause the chips are not getting in the way as with straight flute taps. The smaller ones are too fragile for the inexperienced user.

EDIT:
So many gets the wrong idea, so I better set it straight🙂
For those whos not familiar with toolmaking....a toolmaker isnt making wrenches and screwdrivers as you could be led to believe, but in my case molds for injection molding of plastics.
diyaudio has a trading post? sweet! never noticed that before.
Maybe give a link to that for unhinged then?
