Home acetate recorder perhaps, you cut acetate, not vinyl, as vinyl is too elastic for accurate cutting (but great for stamping for mass-production). Acetates wear much faster.


I'm intrigued what compromises have been made for the cutting head - some techical specs would be useful, hard to tell from the sound comparison they give it's very different from professional vinyl pressing, though that could be for any number of reasons - the bass seems to have acquired harmonics though.

I think this is meant as a lifestyle item, not necessarily for good sound reproduction.

My question relates to audio quality. Suppose you want to recor a vynil. From what source? A MP3? A youtube video? A cassette? A whatsapp audio? From another vynil? I don't see the advantage of have a "high quality" record with poor material saved on it.

This is not about the best sound quality. What do you think that?

Not exactly new.

Vestax used to make the VXR 2000 and an outfit in Germany sells you a cutting lathe you can fit on a Technics 1200.

That was the idea, came on the market in the late '90s or so.
A mate of mine had one so he could play his own tunes at his shows without having to have 500 records pressed.
They also cut bootlegs of rare records but I never said that!

There were some "Record'o'matic" ( I don't remember the name) available in the cities where you could record your voice and deliver across the ocean to your beloved soldier and so on...

Yawn. Did that, decades ago, on a "portable" (hah!) machine with some provenance. Cutting is easy. Good cutting is HARD. I know a guy still does it for a living, and an obsession. (There's still clients for good cuts.)
