I'll always take Julian Simon's side of the wager.😀
Taking the side of an economist in a wager of environmental/biological nature is frankly insane.
There is nothing in their educational background which qualifies them to have an opinion in any way.

And yet he won the wager. Huh. Maybe "educational background" isn't the correct metric. 😀
I reckon our next BIG move is not going to be space travel but underground 'travel'. The way of the mole.
The aquifers in the mid west have been steadily dropping due to agribusiness. What will happen when they can no longer be relied upon for irrigation?
Ogallala Aquifer - depth, important, system, source
California sucks the Colorado river dry, leaving a salt slick going to the gulf of California.
As populations increase, demand for water increases.
I don't see a technological solution on the horizon, and the water shortage is real.

Very interesting thread, the question is not whether we CAN relocate to Mars, the biggest question that we have no answer to is;
Will our government ever release the technology developed within our black projects? The US and possibly 2 other countries, have already developed an anti-gravity propulsion system (not related to freaking aliens either)
The "UFO" sightings are directly related to the testing of a secret air/space craft that self-generates a power source through the manipulation of magnetic forces. Just remember that the U.S. government admitted to having secret technology 20 to 30 years ahead of what's currently available to civilians.
The oil profits are too lucrative and many countries depend on the profits from oil to maintain a stable economy. This technology being introduced to our society, at this point in time, could open a Pandora's box.
No, I'm not a pot smoker but I am aware of a few hidden secrets that could truly change the way we live today....

It was a wager about monetary values of resources in other words completely meaningless in this context.
That is the problem with economists regarding these questions: They know the price of everything and the value of none.
On a biological scale their thinking is mired in short-termism, a misplaced belief in the power of technology and an utter lack of understanding of the problems which we are facing.
Have they yet put a value on biodiversity which is essential for continued life on Earth?
Perhaps,
by the time the whole world knows we have a problem it might be to late..
just for fun..listen to the radio broadcast at the end of the clip.

While mankind fight it out..the reality of our situation could go un-noticed.
We seem to be lost...or perhaps its just imagination.
The scientists say we have a problem..others don't believe we have..

Old news
Allegedly an experiment carried out by Third Reich scientists working for the SS in a German facility known as Der Riese (“The Giant”)[5] near the Wenceslaus mine and close to the Czech border, Die Glocke is described as being a device “made out of a hard, heavy metal” approximately nine feet wide and 12 to 15 feet high, having a shape similar to that of a large bell. According to Cook, this device ostensibly contained two counter-rotating cylinders which would be “filled with a mercury-like substance, violet in color”. This metallic liquid was code-named “Xerum 525” and was otherwise cautiously “stored in a tall thin thermos flask a meter high encased in lead”.[6] Additional substances said to be employed in the experiments, referred to as Leichtmetall (light metal), “included thorium and beryllium peroxides”.[6] Cook describes Die Glocke as emitting strong radiation when activated, an effect that supposedly led to the death of several unnamed scientists[7] and various plant and animal test subjects.[6] Based upon certain external indications, Witkowski states that the ruins of a concrete framework—aesthetically dubbed “The Henge”—in the vicinity of the Wenceslas mine (50°37′43″N 16°29′40″E) may have once served as a test rig for an experiment in “anti-gravity propulsion” generated with Die Glocke.[8] However, the derelict structure itself has also been interpreted to resemble the remains of a conventional industrial cooling tower.[9]
Completely relevant. Price is a signal of scarcity versus demand. It was a wager about monetary values of resources in other words completely meaningless in this context.
Seagull population down 50% since the 1980s:
Salish Sea seagull populations halved since 1980s
just another leading indicator of the depletion of the earths resources that we are the cause of.

Looks like the conclusion is that the California Gull population is increasing due to the abundance of food at landfills and predation of other saltwater bird species eggs (Avocet, Stilt, and Terns), at the expense (decline in population) of the other birds.
You get a mixed bag on that one.
You get a mixed bag on that one.
Completely relevant. Price is a signal of scarcity versus demand.
Still irrelevant to the problem at hand.
The things relevant like biodiversity never had a price attached to them despite it getting scarcer and scarcer every day.
The problem is that what is important here can not be traded in any way hence there will never be a monetary price for them.
As I said: Knowing the price of everything but the real value of none.
You can put a price on all the trees. It will be great but totally insignificant compared to their value to us as long as they remain forests rather than furniture.

Yes, the ecosystem has never been static.
Still irrelevant to the problem at hand.

Wow, were those the goalposts whizzing by? Moving so fast they were blurred!😀

Only in your imagination.
No goalposts were moved by me.

The world will probably do OK until we run out of "poor" countries whose super cheap labour can be exploited to produce the meat of most people want - ain't capitalism grand ... ? 😀
Therein lies one problem.
Taiwan replaced Japan.
India never made it.
China replaced Taiwan.
I don't see another country to replace China when it's economy develops and the people achieve a standard of living close to the west.
Cheap labour is on the wain.
But cheap labour is not the main issue, resources are.
We have a planet with limited resources.
We either limit our consumption, or go to the other planetary bodies for them.
Lets mine the asteroids.

Dirt based resources are only one limited facet. We are running out of helium for instance.
