Unfortunately , Armageddon is the only true solution to these problems.

All these limited resources and burgeoning populations will clash (in as soon as a decade).
Conflicts for freedom have long passed and new ones are strictly
for resources.
We will not be mining asteroids or going to mars until we destroy ourselves , evolve
beyond petty capitalism , and create the next great civilization centuries from now.

PS - this present civilization has eclipsed all previous ones in it's size and consumption.
(and destruction) ....
It might take much longer than a century's recovery to accomplish (any) great things.

Therein lies one problem.

Taiwan replaced Japan.

India never made it.

China replaced Taiwan.

I don't see another country to replace China when it's economy develops and the people achieve a standard of living close to the west.

Cheap labour is on the wain.

But cheap labour is not the main issue, resources are.

We have a planet with limited resources.

We either limit our consumption, or go to the other planetary bodies for them.

Lets mine the asteroids.
Soon robots will do most of what cheap labor does.

In a few more decades robots will "wake up" and demand their "rights" be acknowledged and respected. Perhaps shortly after that, humans will once again be cheap labor...

Very quickly changing ...

The world outside my window is dying so quick , it's unreal.
15 years ago .. pine trees from 300m to 2000m elevation.

Now , just a small "belt" at 1500m.

Above 1500m - acid rain pollution / destruction -total !
below 1200m - invasive species (borers + pollution + warming temperatures)

15 more years = just invasive species , landslides , and flooding.

The great smokies are a huge "shrine" to our follies. 😡

fatalities from violence have been steadily and spectacularly declined over the centuries.
Hmmm... If I tally just Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, will the numbers actually turn out as you say? Perhaps only as a percentage of the total population, but I would guess recent raw numbers are far larger all the way around.
Fascinating that in the same thread that openly considers large scale colonization of Mars we detour into a discussion of the limitations of our technology on Earth. If you don't believe we have the ability to utilize every square inch (6.45 cm sq) of this planet's surface productively then exactly how do you envision these Martio-Earthians feeding, clothing, sheltering and powering themselves. Please pass the bong.
Stupendous perception and logic.
It was a wager about monetary values of resources in other words completely meaningless in this context.
That is the problem with economists regarding these questions: They know the price of everything and the value of none.
Money is only one way of measuring value, even in economics. Same with the term 'resources' - the Google definition is basically "assets." Not necessarily measured in dollars or gold.
Corn farmers in Illinois probably think the lengthwise drive is heaven on Earth.
Conflicts for freedom have long passed and new ones are strictly for resources.
I disagree. The reasons are the same as they ever were.

Regarding biodiversity, I would bet that the number of new species discovered in the past five years exceeds the number of known extinctions. And it's not even close.
Water shortage is a farce intended to separate you from your valuables. The water is somewhere here on the planet. Maybe in a different location today than yesterday, but it's here. And desalinization isn't sci-fi.
Sorry, but that gizmodo link is mostly just more Chicken Little hysteria.

Robot's will need AI to "do what we do".
As soon as an AI is born .... guess what. It will see our destruction as essential
to survive.
Ask Gates or Elon Musk about that one.
One of our soon to be homegrown terrestrial creations will destroy us
(in the very near future) . Especially , if the driving force behind it's development
is profit and power.

Yes , always a conflict ... always a reason.

But that reason was and always will be resources. Politics just makes this
fact "edible" or acceptable to a gullible population.
The" bad guy" is the one between you (or your corporations) and what you want.

Perhaps you fail to grasp the full definition. 😕

Think of how many new undiscovered species went extinct because of the known extinctions ?
Everything is inter- related. One thing goes extinct and 10 others
that were dependent on it go right down the crapper with it. (before they were discovered).
PS - Yes , it's not even close - inversely.

You say that, when before you wrote:

Freedom is or isn't a resource? An asset, as I noted previously?
(This is intended as a mostly rhetorical question, not a point of discussion.)
Politics just makes this fact "edible" or acceptable to a gullible population.
See parenthetical note above.
Oppenheimer & Comte...
The" bad guy" is the one between you (or your corporations) and what you want.
I advocate a volunteer society as opposed to a coercive one.
Your statement, in my mind, implies either theft or jealousy. Both of which I am passionately against.

I think anyone with the slightest knowledge of natural history realizes that there have been countless extinctions during the time of life on this planet. I'm not in favor of mass exterminations (with a few exceptions, no doubt) but I don't get heartbroken just because we are now capable of recording an extinction.
Think of how many new undiscovered species went extinct because of the known extinctions ?
Nah, I'm too much the realist to let myself fall into that sort of fantasy thinking.

-Just an exchange of opinions and meanings.

1. Early 20'th century conflicts opposed atrocities and restored freedom
(to even live , sometimes).
-later ones (70's - now) involve the corporate quest for resources hiding
under the guise of ideology.
-ancient ones were usually a combination of both - on a much smaller scale.

2. Yes , freedom is a resource that can create other resources (innovation and
diversity).

3. I implied nothing - just an observation. Theft - of the well-being of future
generations for present corporate profit and growth is a crime beyond a
crime.
Jealousy (actually contempt) for a present climate of greed and denial that
might actually even put US on the path to extinction.

A man like Elon Musk actually wants OUT , he will form a dozen Tesla car companies to fund his space X
(and leave earth) , not to give us a better trip through the drive-through.
If we mine asteroids , it will be to supply other "elon musks" with the materials
to build escape pods from mother earth (that we are quickly killing).
Edit - I'm a "realist , too. I am surrounded by a mass extinction that I can see and touch.
....can't get more real than that.

What's happening to the ice?

Is this just another change in environment that would happen naturally or is it man made?

How much negative effect is science having on the Earth?
I'm wondering what the outcome of releasing genetic organisms could have.

The water situation has been discussed in the UK and we are being told its real.

Its interesting that there is a positive regarding cars and fuel consumption (I see the change from fossil fuels for transport) Then the glut of oil..
What's going to happen when all the chemicals get released from the special containers dumped in the sea?
(We assume the calculated time release was true and not a minor error)

The sea the trash can of society..the source of all life on earth (water)

NB that's without the China revolution.. compare the consumer numbers when it gets up and running, however its not fair to say that we can have our industrial revolution but no one else can..

I hate to say it but I don't think anyone cares enough to control the situation..however this is just the start....

It would be a bit ironic if we don't run out of resources before we are frightened to use them due to the Earth being on the tipping point..

If we can't go to Mars because the technology isn't available..where can we go to escape this dying world?
There was a TV program recently about money distribution and the interesting discussion about how a penthouse is at the top of a building with the structure in the care of the people below..ie fire burns up a building..

Sorry back to the hunt...

Regards
M. Gregg

Well, I think we're going to be saved probably by a combination of global warming*, higher CO2, the development of poor countries in Asia, S America and Africa, and the efforts of practical folk like this guy:

Scientific and Ground-Truthed Evidence of Our Work

*Unless, of course we're actually entering a cold period - nobody knows cuz the climate models are not yet reliable:

Broken symmetry and long-term forecasting - Essex - 2007 - Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres (1984–2012) - Wiley Online Library

.......................................

The developed world is generally cleaner and more forested than it was 75 - 100 years ago despite all the war and madness that has happened in that time.

Let us hope that present madness does not interfere too much with development of the rest of the world so it can also become cleaner and greener.😎
