I think this whole "...let's go populate Mars" (or an LEO) is mostly a (bong) smoke
I think the whole private space program is a big bong smoke collective wanking waste of time. It's their money let them pee pee it away.
Earth land surface area is roughly 2 * 1014 m2. Population is about 7 * 109. So that's about 30,000 sq m each for every man, woman, and child.
Overcrowded?
Or is this just another one of those dorm-room-and-bong-profound-revelation threads?
Come on Sy.
I've got a lot fo respect for you, but subtract the 2/3 ocean plus inhospitable areas, plus agrable land to support the population and you are left with a pitiful little amount.
On the other hand why are we suggesting going to Mars when a baby step to the moon would be a logical first step.
Have evacuation procedures in place before establishing a colony.
"The Moon is a Harsh Mistress".
Here's a guy smoking a big bong.
No, wait, that's no bong, that's a Space-X Falcon first stage...

Reflecting on Quatermass and the pit,
I think it was referred to as the hunt. Just noticed it on You tube .com 😀 Black and white version TV serial.
What are the chances we will wipe ourselves out before we populate Mars?
Any ideas odds for and against? (us Vs us)
The extinction event...meteor Vs man..which is the most likely event?

You need to subtract at least all deserts (33% of landmass) and mountain ranges (20%) from that equation.
You assume that there's no technological solutions. If anything, I was being conservative- if we can figure out ways to live in the oceans, that density drops by a factor of 5. Agro efficiency and per capita food production have been rising monotonically. Perhaps a read of Julian Simon might prove enlightening.
No, we're not even vaguely overcrowded. So we're back to the dorm room. Don't bogart that bong, man.
The chances are stacked against us as far as I can tell.
If it is not climate change which will kill us (or our current form of civilization), it will be over-population. It has been calculated that to maintain our current population sustainably we would need 12 planets identical to Earth.
If we take oil and gas out of the equation (and they will run out eventually) the UK can sustain a population of 17 million and the USA 40 million. Globally our planet can maintain a total human population of 1 billion but somehow I doubt the spare billions will go and die quietly.

How many deserts has technology made arable so far even though we could if we really put an effort into it?
Hoping for a technological solution is baseless wishful thinking of those who like to die with their heads in the sand.
We simply do not understand enough of nature's intricacies to hope for technology to save us. We can't even make a simple biosphere function for longer than 6 weeks.
PS: Looked up Julian Simon. Not a man whose opinions on this I would trust in any way. He is an economist trying to answer a essentially biological question. There was nothing about him which would indicate that he has any idea about the biology involved.

Besides California? 😀
You mean the same California which has been in the grip of a man-made drought for the last 4 years?
California drought likely a fixture, says Stanford study - San Jose Mercury News

Yes, that one. No one dying of thirst, amazing agro output, expanding population.
The little desert community where I lived in the '80s is now HUGE.

Its interesting,
Over here in the UK there is a general feeling things just don't seem right.
Perhaps its not the case in other countries..
The cold war?
We have had some interesting flybys unless the media is misinforming us. Combined with the other things including weather and even talk about water..

It is impossible for that to last.
Believing so again is sticking your head in the sand to avoid seeing fast approaching massive problems.

We even have cyber attack in the equation now.
It's being taken very seriously.
I can accept there have always been times like this..
however there have always been wars as well.
There seems to be a lose of even community spirit.
It feels quite strange, I can't remember times like this..peoples heads being hacked off in the street is one example.
People that don't care if they live or die so they don't respond to a threat to stop is another.

There were times that your chance to die of violence like war or tribal warfare was about 50-50. Though Fox would like us not to know, fatalities from violence have been steadily and spectacularly declined over the centuries.
Similarly for famine.
Perspective is everything.

I can accept if its going to happen it will..
However it feels like everything even finance is in the equation..
I could be wrong, however I feel we are closer now to a catastrophe than at any other time I can remember. (that's just the people issues)
When there is no common sense combined with this sort of thing there is nothing to mediate response.
The environmental issues are another issue.
As you say perspective is everything..so when is the nice bit happening?

I've only seen bongs in movies.
This aspiration of man to go higher and higher sounds familiar....I think it is very hard to accept our limits and that's why we hear these stories. And people dream weird stuff all the time, let's not forget that.

Fascinating that in the same thread that openly considers large scale colonization of Mars we detour into a discussion of the limitations of our technology on Earth. If you don't believe we have the ability to utilize every square inch (6.45 cm sq) of this planet's surface productively then exactly how do you envision these Martio-Earthians feeding, clothing, sheltering and powering themselves. Please pass the bong.

Yes, I just drove the entire length of Illinois mostly empty space until Chicago some of which is basically an overcrowded war zone. We have much to figure out right here.
