I come from the "TV business", meaning repairing and delivering
and I´ve never been a friend of CRT-projectors.
Neither of the technique nor the picture.
99% are only good for one person to watch and some even can´t satisfy that. I remember a Thomson model (strange enough) that was really good but then again the price/quality ratio wasn´t real fair.
Convergence problems with these CRT´s is THE standard fault, 2nd being defective CRT´s which cost a little fortune.
Another big problem is that dust, nicotine and whatever easily get into the TV and will worsen the picture quite fast.
That said I´ve also seen plasma TV´s having no good picture (not natural for example) so be careful what you buy and check over and over again.
I wish I could still buy some of the older Sony 50Hz TV´s having a picture better than most modern 100Hz TV´s.
That was great quality!
Along with some (actually most) Metz TV´s and also most Loewe TV´s.
Too much mass production in that area IMHO.
And even if you buy a so called high-end TV you´ll get new techniques with it that are not testified and will eventually fail.
(simplified: in that area the customer is the test-person)
Still looking forward to see some good plasma displays with reliable technique.
I totally agree with that, try buying a radio today thats fully in tune! You wont, cos its just mass projuced and most of the times they design a circut where as they dont have to ajust it, even though they can, they dont. The ones that are ajusted most of the time arent ajusted properly, they are ajusted as a circut and not in the tv, and i think you and i both know that 2 caps or any other part can never be exactly the same. the best way to ajust anything is manually in a working complete circut and not just 1 circut at a time. I gues its like cars, no 2 cars drive the same even though they are the exact same model out of the exact same machine.
That prety much goes for anything now days, if you want to compare consumer goods ajustments or lack of, try washing machines, there is no ajustments, hence why they pack up so often.
I agree also with what your saying about cigarete smoke, id have to say thats the biggest killer of crt projectors, its just rots those crts to death, also the lens coatings. Its possibly worse on lcd projectors as it eats into the polarisers!
I also agree with the plasma tech, i feel its not a very mature tech, most if not all of the plasmas ive seen in the shop certainly dont apeal to me, the colouring just looks off, un natural as you say.

Sure, add another dilema to this. 😀 You also forgot one more issue I live in NYC so I don't see cigarette smoke could add any more or less from all the pollution from the traffic here (among other polutants). How do you rate traffic pollution on the LCD or CRT? It's got to be more acidic on the components than cigarette smoke. Thanks anyway for bringing this factor up I never gave pollution much of thought in respects to this. (cough cough)
BTW: Ace I sent a private message to you some days ago not sure if you got it. Was just wonder what your thoughts on a 70mm(clear lens diameter) fl175mm F2.5 projector lens I can obtain for my LCD project since you've been at this for some time and know your knowlege is very good. Thanks in advance.

dead set? my panel proably wont last long then lol. how long has it got doc?
I can handle it rotting my lungs but not my bloody lcd...

hahahaha same with mine, duno, it only takes a week or 2 before it gets into them, i clean mine quite often so im fairly right, just try and vent the room abit lol no duchies!😴

Yeah that would play a role too, i live in a very busy city aswell and its dusty as hell here, most of its road dust though from rubber off of tyres but the polution would certainly play a role. Quite a few lenses ive found after a few months use have stuff on em that ive never seen before, like dots of moisture but rather big. Its not mould btw.

ummm... let me see
10,000 hrs... that's not quite true - most CRT pj's will last well past 32,000 hrs... some of the better made E-home pj's are in the 50's and still showing a great picture.
CRT's are not for everyone - but the picture Cannot be beat - end of discussion.
They take a bit of time to adjust - and set-up but once that is done - you will not be sorry... there is just no comparison - I have a NEC 9PG (em focus) That I just love for movies - and I also have a BenQ PB7200 Dlp that I use with the same screen for some Satellite and Xbox... Why might you ask...
because the picture on the CRT cannot be beat (unless by a better CRT projector). If I was forced to give up one ... the BenQ would go in a second! (and yes I've seen higher-end more expensive DLP & LCD projectors)
Each to his own - but best bang for your buck is still a used CRT projector.

They sure can, if you have the money, try LCOS.

...your not serious are you?...
(I'm honestly asking if your joking... or if you truly believe that LCOS is better - I don't know you that well, so I can't tell if your kidding)
MbayAQ said:for me at least, a true home theater is not portable like a backpack...i have no desire to yank up my projector and take it with me, i would rather set it up with a nice diy screen mounted on the wall, a sweet *** sound system as good sound should go along with a good picture, and appropriately treating the projection room for acoustics and light.....i.e. black curtains.
AMEN brother! ...this is HT in a nutshell, do what makes you happy and buy what you can afford... then enjoy...
The most expensive part of my home theater is the Damm DVD's because I refuse to RIP em'... because isn't that what this is all about ...Movies?... I'm sure there is the odd equipment junkie out there that just loves to tweek (I'm sure he loves CRT too...)
whatever the case - just sit back and enjoy... and invite freinds and family over so they can enjoy your efforts as well..
Take care...
Re: Amen!
...I love CRT - But I hope the above statement is True!... I really would love a easy solution that meets the PQ of CRT... but I'd be willing to bet that by 2010 LCD will also be a technology of the past ...or on it's way out the door.
I think the future is probably OLED or some other unknown tech...
There is a lot of "pie in the sky" tech out there that if ever come to fruition we'll all have nothing to argue about 😀
The IBM-MIT Nano-lithography lab is working with data density models that should produce HD with a 3.2 TB capacity ...the size of a wristwatch... (How many movies could you back up on that thing)
IBM link interesting read... and
you could spend day's here contemplating the facinating things to come Foresight
cheers

I tried out that Light Fusion type screen (from another DIY site) my version for trial purposes here's what I used:
1: Sheet of wax paper
2: Front surface mirror (FSM) from OHP.
Wrapped the wax paper around the FSM.
Right now I have a cable public access channel on with some guy on stage playing a guitar (a small bar type venue) with these bright round stage bulbs behind him. On the da-lite screen they look a dull gray. When I place my light fusion mock up, these bulbs become rather a bright white and the image looks great. Too bad the mirror is only 90mm wide x 165mm long almost 16:9 looking. Even the white text being displayed on the bottom of the image (well for me it's on the top because it's upside down) which is dull also comes out quite white. I mean that's what it's all about reflecting as much light back to viewer as possible. Bottom line, I can see the Light Fusion giving really great results with a CRT projection. Much like the Professors screen that ancorp gave us a link to.
Now all I need is to get the new 14" T.V. and a larger diameter lens.

I specifically meant smoke, dust, grease getting on the surface of the CRT´s, lamps and mirror. It's got to be more acidic on the components than cigarette smoke.
If you are handy with TV´s and don´t mind cleaning it once in a while that could be OK for you then.
But yes, pollution might add to this although dust and nicotine (if any) are the main factors.
Quite often we cleaned a CRT-projector as a free service in addition to another repair.
The customers then say:"Uhh, is that bright, can you turn it down?"
😀
Well, I finally was able to check out quickly the Toshiba 14" at best buy and it's a nice little set. Fairly bright on the normal settings. Will be extremely bright with tweaking it up. Looks like this is the one to go with including all the input connection options.
I still think that an Advent would be best (also 14" flat). Its very easy to tweak up to like double/triple the brightness/contrast! Plus you can adjust the anamorphic squeeze to how much you want. An old big opaque projector lens/mirror assembly, and a 14" flat Advent tv set can make a decent projector!
Greetings everyone, I'm back. Looks like I'm reviving this thread again. Been busy with work and the holidays. But I finally picked up the Toshiba 14" today. I did look at the advent 14", it was right next to it in the store (best buy) and after setting the Video on both the Toshiba was still the brighter. I'll let ya's know how it goes tonight when I get a chance to set it up properly with the lens. The Tv does have one of those anti-glare glasses on it which I'll probably remove to increase the light from the TV since I know glass can reduce light a bit etc.
Ancorp, I see you got a CRT projector now.

Gorgeous!! The colors, clear and stable picture. The Toshiba CRT is great. Now all I need is a bigger lens. The 14" toshiba is definitely showing the limitations of the 2.5 inch copy lens. I can see towards the edges of the screen a circular pattern (as well as a slightly dimmer image) and it really should be bigger to cover more TV screen area and allow more light through. Right now, I'm watching ER on NBC and it looks awesome regardless of any slight issues. I'm a very happy camper right now. 😀
If worse comes to worse I'll get the 100mm (4 inch) triplet from lumenlabs (the price is a killer though), but if someone here has a used bigass lens they'd like to part with I'll be more than happy to purchase it from you.

H-hey Magnification - welcome back!
The thing about the Advent is that with a proper code to enter the service menu, you can boost the brightness atleast double if not triple...if you have a chance, i suggest you EXCHANGE it, if you have the chance (as long as you havent ripped out the front glass yet...😀 )
The lens - do what I did, find an opaque projector - one of those old big-*** ones from the 60s, on ebay, the closer the better (shipping costs...) and get a lens off of that. I got a lens that seems and looks identical to the diylabs one for 119.99, and I payed only 9.99 for the whole projector!!! so you get a mounting flange/focus knob and rails/ front surface mirror and mounts, etc!!!
The lens is a 135mm diameter all glass triplet lens (heavy), looks like its coated. I got my lens off from a Bell and Howell "The Spotlight" (ts-7) projector. Should give you much better results...
(yes i said most of that already...😉 )
Glad to see that you are already happy with what you have so far🙂 , but there are plenty of room for improvement at this stage...
Yea, I got a CRT projector, still need to get some glycol for it, and tune it up ALOT, but got it for only $30 canadian locally! Works, with remote, manual, service/install manual, 2 brackets... and best of all mint condition CRTs, so it will last me for many years (ill probably upgrade by than, its a 480i only projector)
Good luck man!🙂
