Can you define what you mean by 'ghosting'. When I say 'scanline effect' I'm talking about a pattern of lines which can show up on certain shaded/colored objects which move at a certain pace vertically or semi-vertically. When they show up it appears that in between each line the information is missing, and they just show up as 'black'. Flesh tones are the worst, so if during a film, a character raises or lowers their hands at a certain pace, it can be seen (at least my eyes can).
As I understand it, all LCDs have this issue (whether "scanline effect" is the proper term or not I'm not sure). Many never notice it because they don't sit close enough, etc.
Ok, I know exactly what your talking about. I have the same problem. I have a very large screen (almost 10' wide) and I sit pretty close (I have to because the throw distance is so short). It shows up the most on flesh tones, but ONLY when there is movement. I really don't know what it is, but here's what I think it is.
If you'll notice, the pattern matches the rings on the fresnel. They are this direction [ \ ] in the top right and bottom left, and this direction [ / ] in the top left and bottom right, which suggests that the fresnel has something to do with it. Could be:
A) Response time is slow. A faster response time will fix this.
B) Fresnel needs to have a higher ring density. Most OHP's fresnels are low in that aspect.
C) It's a side effect from the light beam coming in at an angle. Using two single fresnels with the panel in between, verses having the panel on top of one double fresnel would solve this. Also, a panel with a wider viewing angle might also solve this.
Not really sure, but my guess is that it has something to do with that. I'm curious to see if it exists on a non-fresnel LCD projector.
There are a lot of hurdles in my project, as well as others with similar projects. I think the most important thing to find right now is a place that sells large fresnels with high ring counts and various focal lenghts.
And what is "ghosting" -- is that where you see a slight outline of objects outside where the object's actual dimensions onscreen? I get this effect if I crank up the sharpen settings of ffdshow in my dvd player/filter settings.
I know what ghosting is in analog video, and that's an accurate description, so yeah, that's probably what it is.

yeah i guess its like when the tv ant is out abit it gives u a gohsting pic, but then again im sure what these guys are talking about is when the pic is moving and say with dvd or some good signal, like when the pic moves diag, i think the best way to test this is when u move your mouse on a lcd in a diag motion u see like a ghost trail

Lifter - If you find a site for those fresnels let me know. I'm trying to have a couple custom made.
From what I can tell, some of you are taking inexpensive CRT projectors and comparnig them to something grossly different and then crying about it.
If my CRT projector gets me 10,000 hours and costs me $1500 to replace the tubes then I do not see the difference when a digital projector costing the same as what the CRT projector cost me has a 2,000 bulb costnig $400 a pop. The CRT tubes are costing me 15 cents per hour and the bulb is costing me 33% more.
Now, I am cmoparing a $4-5K used CRT to a $5-6K digital projector. And if someone thinks CRTs will be dead by 2010 then it'll take that long for digital projectors to develope the black levels low enough to satisfy the consumer demand to stop buying the CRTs.
As it stands, my 1997 CRT cost me $4500 and I got it at a decent price. On the other hand, its a depreciated $27K projector that I can now afford. I cannot afford a $10-15K new digital projector that would take to even begin to cmopete with my CRT.
As always, YMMV.

this thread is why i dont read this site anymore....same kinds of discussions at avsforum, only without all the immaturity and name calling. also the arguers there are actually informed on the topics and willing to concede on certain issues when it is needed.
i used to have a taken apart 15" lcd panel with a 4200 lumen overhead...it looked great...but if you wanna talk about fragile..damn. If it lasted I'd still use it and forget about crt, but it didnt. 🙁 oh well, for me at least, a true home theater is not portable like a backpack...i have no desire to yank up my projector and take it with me, i would rather set it up with a nice diy screen mounted on the wall, a sweet *** sound system as good sound should go along with a good picture, and appropriately treating the projection room for acoustics and light.....i.e. black curtains. and sure gaming is fun, but only for certain types of games. flight sims are incredible, but fps are not as well suited unless you can sit a good distance from the picture at a desk or table in the middle of the room, which isnt very appealing (and it would look dumb). sure, everyone is biased, but chances are you aren't going to change anyones opinions....especially through extreme examples and name calling. Starting threads like this really has no point either....and this debate is like the war on drugs or the war on terrorism.....one side is not going to win. Even years from now, there will still be those who swear by crt (i wont be one of them, I choose to hope that the upcoming laser projectors will deliver what they promise)....so thats just my .02

I don't look at these kinds of discussions as winning or losing, I like to read both sides of the fence and become more informed.
Although that may not have been the original author's intent, what typically spins out of these things (if you can ignore the name calling and so forth) is often some pretty good information. This is in respect to having understanding of who is writing what you are reading, and adjusting the bias-factor accordingly.

damn fragile rippon cables...hehe. Well, i dropped it once about 6" to 1 foot...that killed like half the picture. then it just sat in my room UNTOUCHED by any and unmoved, not even breathed upon while i was at college for 2 months...then i came home and all it would display was a green fog..... $240 down the toilet.
wow! well at least u got to see you image projected i broke mien before even placing it on OHP lol but im going to re try another LCD, CRT would be great but the maintence and life are not of my liking, but the quality is supposed to be AMAZING!! feel free to post pix 🙂 good luck
yeah, the maintenence is definately there, but hey, if you want something you have to work for it, hehe. And I thought the life was like 10,000 hours...or do you mean something else by life? thanks for the luck, and ill try to get some pics up when i get it as im gonna make a diy screen so i can use that excuse to post pics here...hehehehehe
no excuses needed, this IS a Video section ya know not just DIY part 😉 and i know some ppl are gonna be jealous of your CRT (besides me lol)
the life is GREAT if you can find one with full life 🙂 but what i meant by maintenace was fixing a damaged gun and burned out lights, i hear replacing lights are EXPENSIVE like a thousand at least, but for 10,000 Hrs its better than LCD prj lights.
my lights are 10,000 hrs too im using HQI all i need is an LCD and im set.
any who, what CRT did you buy?

I was hoping this thread never got bumped. Haven't been here in a while because I've been slaving over my new CRT. I feel like an idiot for starting it w/ the title I chose (I really meant CRT technology overall is no good). I got an NEC XG110 and the picture is absolutely stunning. It's a shame I can't play games on it w/o paranoia (can't even watch 2.35:1 movies w/o paranoia), and it was a PAIN to setup (still is, I won't be done for a long time). But nevertheless, it is such a beautiful picture.
Anyways, I had to respond to this. How can you say, "I prefer AVS over this because of posts like this"? Most of the childish arguing in THIS thread came from Xantos, an avsforum regular who types in all caps because he thinks it's cool. There are countless threads just like this one over there.
Yes, the informed people there are more informed than the informed people here. But there's plenty of idiots over there as well. This forum is more for college kids and people who want to make something themselves in order to spend as little money as possible. Nothing wrong w/ that.
And you can't lump AVSforum alltogether. Each forum is completely different. For example, I'd put the intelligence level of this forum as light years beyond AVS' "RPTV" forum and the "$20,000 and Up" forum.
You should see how informed some of the 20k and up people are. They think spending $2000 on an AC power cable improves sound quality even though all the equipment converts the AC power into DC power. There is a guy who spent like $250 each on a bunch of stupid rubber stands that keep the speaker cable off the floor. "Made out of the same special non-conductive material the phone company uses". WTF is that? Rubber? Thinking that keeping speaker cables off the floor improves the sound is idiotic enough. Thinking that you need to fork out all that money to do it is even stupider.
You get my point. And BTW, I think 90% people here know more about light and optics than 90% of the people over there.
jbl model 6850 projection
First I'm new to all of this and most of it sound interesting!
I have the jbl model 6850 however it seem impossible to find any information on it.
If some of the crt pro's would consider helping a user with installation problem I would be very much greatful.
Question 1
Who really makes this model jbl 6850
Question 2
Where can I geta manual from
Question3
Which room lighting would be the most productive for this unit or other crt projection units
thanks

CRT at first glance...
I just recived a Barco BD 600 today....I knew this thing was big...I know this thing was H E A V Y....(60lbs) but it didnt know it was T H I S BIG!!!!
The ebay picture fooled me..lol this thing is nearly 5 feet...I dont think i can keep it now lol
the seller told he converged it for me for a 5ft (diagonal) image
He also told me I shouldnt play games for more than 1 Hour...has anyone ever played for more than one hour? he also said if i DO plan to play for more than 1 hour I should put the brightness down so I dont burn the CRTs life
any thoughts of how/where I can mount this beast,,? im scared...lol
PS::
I agree with Lifter..to some extent. But I dont agree with the numbers, generalization isnt good...I think its random one day we could get a genius on these forums and the other day we get a damn fool same goes for most forums IMO,as for 250$ speaker stands...lol Price doesnt matter to some people...we make think its stupid but they love it...it always depends on what YOU think its worth...some ppl pay 400-500 for XGA projection panels...I wouldnt pay more than 150$ I personal would never buy rubber stands...lol
also I think alot of ppl are introduced to this video section from DIY projector sources..that how I got here..I saw this link on many DIY prjectors sites last year...some ppl come here sole to steal ideas...IE: ebay 100" tv sellers... and some other stuff.
I dont know much about AVS..I dont like *new* environments..I'll stick here 🙂
my 2 cents 🙂
