Clon C-3850

@chermann
Here is where to put in the search path. Just type in additional lines to tell LTspice where else to look for parts.

@Kleinhorn
LTspice does no come with OPA1656 in the library. One (me) has to download the Pspice model at TI website and import to LTspice.

More importantly most of the contributors to this thread already have C3850 boards, or are going to have them made from Peter's excellent Gerbers, and are looking to get the best from them.
This is the boat I'm in. I do have a friend with fistfulls of LME49600 who advocates their use at the least provocation. I'm in it more for the speakers than the electronics so while I'd be interested if a project developed along those lines I am unlikely to push that forward on my own.

So the 15k resistors R12, R16, R19 and R21, which set the diamond quiescent current can be replaced with 3.5mA CRDs.
The emitter resistors of Q6 and Q12 can be reduced from 22R to 6.8R which will increase the quiescent current through these transistors to about 11mA, so they should run in class A even at the maximum output swing.
If anyone wants to try this and is uncertain about how to use and match CRDs I can explain.
Even if you dont want to try the CRDs reducing R12, R16, R19 and R21 from 15k to 5.1k will set the currents to the same level as the CRDs would. Don't forget to change the change emitter resistors of Q6 and Q12 from 22R to 6.8R.
I'm interested to give this a whirl, but may take some time to get to it (this weekend? Next?). I'm unfamiliar with CRDs, but I have a batch of resistors in a drawer. If I can dig up the correct values I'll give it a shot (or come back with further questions). Please do proceed and post about your results...

LTspice insisted it couldn't find the OPA1656 in the roro user library. Even after I added my documents folders in the Search Paths. So I made a user roro, with the OPA1656.LIB file in the LTspice\lib\sub and it got past that point. Then it says "Can't find definition of model 'BC550C_C'. Not sure where the standard.bjt file is supposed to go. Also not sure where Cordell-Models.txt should go.

It works properly with the C-3850_Sans_Nonsense.asc file.

Bedtime.

...... But wait, we can use constant current, or current regulating, diodes (CRDs). These look just like little 1n4148 small signal diodes but are in fact tiny ICs using a jfet and resistor to set the current. So the 15k resistors R12, R16, R19 and R21, which set the diamond quiescent current can be replaced with 3.5mA CRDs. This will up the hfe of all of the transistors and set the quiescent current of the vas transistors Q4 and Q10 to 7mA, solidly into class A with increased hfe. The emitter resistors of Q6 and Q12 can be reduced from 22R to 6.8R which will increase the quiescent current through these transistors to about 11mA, so they should run in class A even at the maximum output swing. You can get the CRDs ( they call them current limiting diodes ) from AliExpress at a reasonable price. Search for "current limiting diodes" and select the E-352.......
hi chalky

i did a short search at mouser, and i found this - current regulator diode 😉

Cherrman the devices you get from mouser will be genuine Semitec parts; I don't think the ones from AliExpress are as they are slightly smaller than the Semitec parts and the leads look different ( I have both types in my inventory ). Having said that the AliExpress parts work fine in all the projects I've used them in so far, might be different if you ran them up to their max of 100V across the diode. I'm pretty sure that both parts are functionally identical for this application. Take your pick.

Hi guys
in my country it is nearlly the same price??!! Welcome to Austria!
aliexpress 5,89 plus deliver 4,29 for ten pieces 10,18
mouser 7,76 --> tax 20% 9,31 euro
and delivery 0 (zero) euro if my consummation is more then 50 euros..

so i do as always -do not buy components from china!

I have measured out the resistors 15 K on the mofi board, easy doing, only 5x 15 k resistors on the pcb. The 22 ohm resistors i have also marked with a red point on my picture. Perhaps it would help.
I will order CDR at Ali Express. Until the CRD 352 i will change the resistors to lower values.

Peter

At Ali every Country has its own price. Germany is expensive, USA and Austria have a cheaper price, about 1 Euro in this case. Shipping costs are different too. Mouser is a great company, cheap prices and free delivery ( if you buy components over 50 euro). I have to wait for months then, to much components in stock... 😎

Was the Mofi 3850 clone not delivered from china ? 🙂🙂

As both the opa1656 .lib and .asy files came in the same folder under \C3850, how about trying adding a line to the search paths pointing at that folder? with the newest greatest LtSpice24, there seems to be restrictions to altering the "factory" library files and folders.

The standard.bjt in the \c3850 folder has the bjt models used in the schematic. It is to be located in the \lib\com

Alternative to standard.bjt, a quick way to make the schematic work is, change the transistors in the schematic from BC550C_C to BC550C, BC560C_C to BC560C. The latter are covered by Cordell_models.txt.

Added C:\Users\myusername\Documents\LTspice\C3850 to search folders. No good. Same error message.

Added standard.bjt to new folder LTspice\lib\com . No good.

Right clicked on BC550C_C "Enter new value for Q9", changed to BC550C. Right clicked on the transistor symbol, and transistor listed as BC550C. Changed all of the other transistors. No good.

Right clicked on the transistor symbol in the schematic and transistor listed as BC550C_C (after reverting to the original C-3850.asc file). In the "Pick new transistor" list, BC550C_C or BC550C are not listed. Also, BC560C_C and BC560C are not in the list.

Thank you @nattawa for your patience.

Hi,
i can say i picked the right 15k/22 ohm resistors...🙂
@chalky
Your Mod is working on the original Mofi board. Sounds very good. Very nice indeed. I have the feeling that in higher frequences it is more open, much more open as without your mod.. love it...👍
Chalky thank you very much for your effort and ideas....
It was also a good idea to change the OPA, but subjective and only my ears. The gain of ~ 5 is always sufficient. I dont understand why the chinese built preamps and amps with a higher gain as necessary.

I have to hear much more (and Moore)

Greets
Peter

Ali seller Mingni with 10 pcs Semitec E-352 for $5 USD plus $3.44 shipping to US. Ali search stinks. Use Google search with site:aliexpress.com . Much better.

Still plan to get them from DigiKey for $7.77 for 10, since I will also be getting a bunch of LME49600 and BUF634 (in 8SOIC). These buffers look incredible. Thanks @nattawa .

Thank you, @chalky for all of your great information. I am learning a lot.

That was quick work Peter; I'm soldering mine up at the moment but am short of a few parts so I'll have to wait for them to be delivered. If you really want to be blown away then swap the opamp for an OPA2828. The only problem is that none of the distributors stock the soic version, only the ssop with a thermal pad for which no adaptors seem to be available. Even if they were you'd need to use an oven or hot air to solder them in place. Someone please tell me I'm wrong. What I'm doing is to use pairs of OPA828s ( the single version ) on a 2xsoic ( one on top, one on bottom ) to dip8 adaptor; an expensive proposition but well worth it. I alleviated the pain a bit by buying enough of them with a friend to get a quantity discount. They are now my go to opamps for highest audio quality.
