Charlize, my thoughts

any where i could buy some toroid inductor?

Well, if you really want to... 🙂 Yeah, I know where to get 'em. As soon as my supplier gets back to me with a quote on the custom winding job, I'll let you know. Maybe we should go together and order a few to lower costs.

Cheers,
Michael

Hello,

I'm a new owner of Charlize and i have 2 questions:
- Is anyone have change capacitors? I think for example mundorff

- When you have tried battery supply, was it lead battery? I think nickel cadnium battery is best because of the low internal resistance.

edge540,

Film caps. will benefit sonically.

I've only tried SLA battery. What AH does the NiCd battery you intend to use comes? This will determine the charge duration of the battery when operating with the Charlize.

My thoughts:

1. Has the 2020 been discontinued? It's not on the manufacturer's web site product list.

2. Got a data sheet though, and it'll run from 8 volts apparently. What is the effect of reducing the supply voltage on these beasts - does it drag the performance curve to the left, or does it reduce output power but have less effect on the distortion curve?

3. Anyone got a circuit diagram for the Charlize cct?

4. I'm used to building analogue kit, but all the talk of massive DC offsets and unspecified mishaps if the input ground is bridged does make me nervous of some down the line module (DAC say) totalling my precious speakers.

5. Nicely put together board though, don't think I've ever had one so thick. Pity the i/o presentation doesn't allow for connectors soldered directly to the board, I prefer to minimise number of wires between modules, and always thought it a little weird to have speaker cables hefty enough to supply an arc welder that are connected to the outputs via bits of jumper wire.

6. According to the Tripath data sheet, power up noise is suppressed. Not really an issue for me though as my kit is only ever powered down for maintenance.

7. PSU will be either a 12volt smps wall wart, or a 10 amp 13.8 regulated monolith with one of those massive car amp capacitors.

8. Amp will probably be stuck to the underside of a shelf by it's heatsink with double sided sellotape. No case - really winds up the missus this, but probably not as much as my minimalist PC (bare motherboard hung on the wall like a picture).

Well, another Charlize convert last night. I had my friend over for a night of music, and he said he could not fault Charlize. I coonected it straight to the variable out put of my CD player. The detail and soundstage was awesome. So much so, I am thinking of mounting Charlize inside my CD player, hard wireing it to the output. This would shorten the signal path by 2 lots of rca's, and a set of interconnects. I am also going to solder my speaker wires straight to the board. I think this is an amazing amp and would respond well to these things. All of you just considering this amp, have no fear, it wont dissapoint. Go for it.😉

It was me that heard it 😀 I could not fault it or find any nasties at all..... it's a great device and just kept dishing it out. Going to play with one of those for sure.

What SPL speakers and impedance are people using with Charlize as barfind's are 100dB OB and the amp is only on idle. I do have a SI hooked up to some 86dB speakers for the computer and in a small to medium room, play loud without clipping.

I've used Charlize with my open baffles (Goodmans 201 drivers), other open baffles (Ciare 250 drivers), IPL A2 ported speakers (89db), Mordaunt Short Pageant II's (90+db) and Cybergs Needles and it sounds very good with all of them. 🙂

But I'm now convinced that a valve pre-amp is the way to go with these class-T amps. :att'n:

I triple that

I went back and forth and with the tube preamp it is much more musical.
But as I said in a previous post. It could be the source that is lacking in musicality.
Maybe Charlize is so good we can hear it now or maybe we've always use a tube preamp.

I've always gone straight - Source to tube amp - don't feel I need a tube preamp in front of a tube amp.

But SS I always go with tube preamp.

hard to tell unless you have various sources to test -

Normally I use my Charlize with a tube pre. I needed some new tubes for the pre and decided to just plug it into the CD's varable output. I have to tell you I was amazed. However, I haven't done any tube rolling on the pre, and with the nos valves installed it may sound better. In any case, Charlize sounds quite amazing, The best soundstage I have heard.

Hmmm, interesting. Just keep it well away from the CD electronics, you don't want that Triapth noise getting into the CD clock circuit.

How do you plan to do volume, software? I have a DVD player with tons of room inside. Might be fun to put an amp in there. Don't know how the volume thing would sound, though.

Are we nutz :whacko: or what?? Good fun!

Micheal, I think we are nutz and whacko. But it is fun isn't it.
My Sony X7 ES has a variable output as well as fixed, coax, and optical. I figure I could just wire it to the varible output connection, and then use the volume control on the player. Just a thought, but it may be worth a try :smash:

Hello Charlize owners,

My Charlize is now connected to a PC audio syste and should have been fully broken in. Very good sounding but it is not as quite as before. Noise generated through my 97dB OB speakers when no signal is passing. As far as I can remember, the Charlize was previously noiseless when I test drive it by my CDP.

Is your Charlize dead quite when driving a high efficiency speakers? Or the noise is from my PC computer, IR transceivers for wireless/keyboards?

I will try to figure out if my PC & ancillaries is making the Charlize noisy. However, I would like to have your experience concerning how quite the Charlize should be.

For your information, I have an incident that my Charlize was reversed connected to the PSU making it quite hot. Fortunately, I was not damaged and can still work now. However, I don't know if this wrong connection incident has hurt the Charlize making it noisy now.

Thanks

Andy
