CDROM control KITs VFD version

Huang,

Thanks for the HEX files!
I have some CD's which make the firmware act up;
(for example Robbie Willaims - RudeBox)

If I put it in the player, the player gives

--ERROR DISC--
Plz Insert a Disc

However, I can press play, fwd etc. normally and it will play, but display keeps blinking.
Looked in the HEX file with a disassembler to see if I can find anything strange in the section reading the TOC, but your routines seem okay.

Any Clue?

Jorn

@mindwipe

I have had the same problem with SOME cdrom player. Probably the CD is copy-protected, or has a strange format file, and your cdrom point out that. Try another cdrom (newer ones have less problems reading strange things)

ps: I'm a programming newbie, but I'm curious to see assembler file of the firmware... could you send me a copy, please? Thanks.

Hi Jorn

acid_k2 is right.Mostly the disc is copy-protected if playing another CD have no error.
You can try to put the same CD in another cdrom, see what'll happen.

acid_k2,
You're probably right, although I don't see any "copy control" logo on these discs. I'll try another drive later, but I use this older CD drive because of it's good compatibility.

Regarding the assembly file... Huang sent me the HEX file which I decompiled to have a look. A decompiler only reconstructs the code without any logical names, so it's pretty useless to look at. I'm not going to post it, because Huang sent me the HEX file in confidence, and his code isn't public (otherwise he'd give me the .asm files in the first place 😉

You can find some source code by searching the forum:
"cdrom source code"

Huang,
A last question; have you got a list of players that are compatible with 1x speed, all drives I tried so far only spin at high speed, making it noisy!

Jorn

I use a 1X CDROM

I'm using a 1X http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=1727889#post1727889

It is "pretty slow" like it is going to stall...so must be 1X. The previous model I used is faster but still still silent.

In general, the older the CDROM, the slower. Find something circa 1999. Some of the newer ones, even brand name spin so fast that they shake...

I have yet to find a drive that doesn't work as long as it is set to master

Hi Jorn

Sorry..haven't make a list about it.
I have used a very quite CDROM,but it "has gone".One NEC cdrom.the year 199X.Not remember the model.
And I get a result, the CDROMs more quite than DVD ROMs.

Hi yildiray35

Yes,that's right.The black/white LCD display availble.(not very black,see picture) http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=1746893&stamp=1234795624

To connect to a DAC.you need a TTL to SPDIF converter

no, you can connect from the digital output pins to an RCA plug without a ttl converter, and from there to a dac.

I have build several units that way, and they work perfectly.

That's the way I'm using it too and for the time being, I don't see any drawback. (CD output connected directly to Monica DAC)

My order

Huang,

I sent you payment for a kit (under my real name). Please acknowledge!

As I promised in my e-mail, I have several older CD drives that I'll try once I get the kit. Until now I've been using an Acer, Goldstar, and Plextor, all of which have stop-start buttons, plugged directly into the coax input of my DAC (a Musical Fidelity XAct). You can go forward but not back. With one of them, the CD starts over again automatically.

I can't really say I've noticed a difference in sound quality. Some read CDRs better than others, and they do seem to handle read errors differently.

Now I'll be able to try some others that have digital out but no start-stop button! One is a Plextor 760 SA. I'll report on them, including any differences in sound quality.

Info on firmware update

Forgive me for bothering you again, but about upgrading the firmware: Do we download the firmware update and flash the controller via a cable by running an .exe? Is the cable shown in the picture all that's needed? What interface does it use? My computer has only USB, SATA, and FireWire.
