Hi all
controller tested! with 3 different cdrom player, here some result:

1° test - really old Mitsumi (2x, january 1995, made in China, no digital output!):
-tray opening ok, tray closing failed (from remote), closed manually from the button on the cdrom drive, then "error disk" on display, and frozen controller..... get away :smash:

2° test - really old Hitachi CDR-8330 (24x, july 1997, made in Japan)
-something better, I can listen to some music... then I try forward button... display locked in new time on the track, but the song continue to play normally.... all function on the remote and keyboard are now disabled... but the ghost in the cdrom makes me listening to Metallica - Nothing else matters....

3° test - old CD R/RW drive LG GCE-8320B (32x10x40x, february 2002, made in Corea)
-ok, no problem with this... really fast TOC reading (about 1 second), fast closing/opening of the tray, all function in remote trasmitter enabled and work good. Stable and silent player, low noise from disk rotation, only some noise when moving laser head. Good.

It seems the older player have more incompatibility problem then newer ones... so stay away from '90 devices.

Other tests in the next days, stay tuned.

PS: slowgay! display connector has 14 pin, controller board has 16 pin... :bawling: (ok, it's intended for LCD display, but I'm ignorant and stupid... :smash: and I could connect it in a wrong way).

Hi glt

What kind of the 25uF capacitance to instead C7?Just like one of the C8-C11?Or use the non-polarized electrolytic capacitor? Is the picture correct now? Thanks

Regards,
Huang

Regular electrolytic is fine like the others. (My only practical experience is that I've seen 10 uF electrolytic used in many lm317/lm337 based PS as the adjust resistor bypass, I recommended 25uF based on the lt1084 datasheet).

1 sec TOC reading is really fast. My old Mitsumi (year 2000) reads the TOC 9 seconds after I push the tray button (which in my case starts the spinning since I removed the case/tray). In your machine, how long to read TOC from the time the tray starts closing?

Hi acid_k2

Thanks for your good report~
😀"so stay away from '90 devices"Maybe..but some "90 devices" are good too.

"PS: slowgay! display connector has 14 pin, controller board has 16 pin... "
I have sent the pictures for you to understand of it by email before.

Hi all
Two other cdrom player tested yesterday, here the results:

4° test - DVD R/RW DL Benq DW1640 (16X, may 2005, made in Malaysia, no hearphones output!):
-no problem with this, but it is a bit slow on finding/changing tracks, and makes some noise. Poor and light chassis causes vibrations.

5° test - old Samsung SC-152 (52x, july 2001, made in Indonesia)
-work good and fast. A bit unstable and noisy player. Loud noise and a sort of "beep" when starting disk rotation. Inside: good PCBs, but very poor laser assembly (plastic material everywhere).

@ glt
about LG GCE-8320B:
It takes 1-2 second to read TOC from a 10 tracks CD -- time taken from starting of CD rotation, add about another 1 second from when I press the "close tray" button --

Hi Huang,

I received my CDROM control kit today. It's looks okay, but I don't have the time to check it. Maybe this weekend.

Have anyone of you tried hooking up this DAC on your DIY CDROM player? It looks good but I need your opinion.

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-BIG-24bit-1...Zalgo=DLSKWL&its=K&itu=MBMS%2BUCK&otn=6&ps=48

Any DAC sugestion that would work best on this CDROM player? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Fred

Hi Fred,

Not exactly this DAC, but this seller had other DACs a while ago. You can write her (it´s a she) for the small DAC-board. When you modify this small board to a tube output stage (forget about the solid state) it turns out to be a near perfect combination. You only need the TTL to Coaxial converter which is mentioned in this topic before.

Please check this site for more information on this DAC: http://www.lampizator.eu/index.html

Here you can also find why the board you mention is less suitable for modifying 😉 . Both DACs really need the upgrade to Tube Output to perform well, but when you look at the page I mentioned before you can see this is not a lot of work and will not coast you much.

I already ordered 55 of these DACs for me and my friends, but have never found any of them to sell it.

Regards,
Mischa

Hi Fred

Very sorry,I am very poor in DAC.Haven't any good sugestion can give you.You can get the suggestion from Mischa.
My opinion:The controller just control the CDROM,So I think you just need to get know if the DAC works good with the CDROM you have. Yes,you need the TTL to Coaxial converter too.

BTW,I seem that DAC before. If you interested in that DAC,I can get the same one to you.But need to wait after Chinese New Year.

Huang

that DAC seems good for that price.... at least it's a low-cost starting point for some further modification....
In Italy the only CS8416 costs about 15-20 euro, and it's damn difficult to find in local stores.

Last CD-ROM report:
- 6 - old 36X Pioneer DR-714S (aug. 1998, made in Japan) SLOT LOADING!
good player, enough solid and heavy, a bit noisy when in pause (tic-tic), and when changing from the last to the first track. This noise is caused from a small stepper motor, and a large threaded drive rod, moving the laser assembly. Damping it with some foam probably helps.
The drive has a digital ouput, but I'll try to find internal I2S data (thanks to glt for the idea).

NEW DISPLAY

Hi all

I get a good news.May be I can get the display like the picture below after Chinese New Year(about 2 weeks from now).
Thanks

Regards
Huang

Thanks Mischa for your suggestion. I will look into that tweaking of the DAC output to a tube ouput. It's very interesting. It also says on that site, that replacing the NE5532 to LM4562 will also sound better and can be comparable to a tube out put. It means to say that there's a lot of room for improvement on that DAC. I agree with acid_k2 that the price is not bad at all.

Huang, would you be selling the just the display if I decide to replace mine to different color display?
