can I send it to you to fix, its getting very heavy 😱
They don't make em like they used too do they...
Think you are going to have to try it on the external DAC if poss as that splits the player in half. See what that proves.
I've too much on to take in repairs I'm afraid... sorry 🙂
No problem, was only a punt, will try the DAC first, if not, might have to throw it out there to anyone that can help fix for a reasonable price of course.
Thanks Mooly, you have been a great help.

Indeed, I dont give up easy, just impatient thats all, typical, sold my surround amp a while back....doh!!
Keep us posted on developments... if I think of anything I'll post it here.
definately will do, I will fix it, too good to chuck away or sell for nothing on fleabay
the sound is very loud and alters with the actual music and volume of course (music is in the background and quiet)
its modulating and a kind of fluttering sound, very digital sound, not hum or hiss, um, almost like helicopter blades but changing in pitch to the music.
Where did my reply go?
Probably won't be of much help, but the symptoms sound awfully similar to the issues I have with a Toshiba CD player, also based on cdm4/tda1541a.
Since the problems with my player started after I took it apart to fix a broken rca socket my guess was the problem being a faulty connection of the data cable from the laser assembly to the pcb, since it was a pain to get it back in with the cable being really short and the connection placed under the transport.
So it might be worth a shot to check all the connections. I didn't get around redoing the connections yet, cause frankly I'm not really motivated to go through the annoying process of fiddling the cable in under the transport without being sure if that will solve my problem.
So I'm really interested if you're able to find the root of the problem cause it sounds like we're having the same issue.

The Data cable is very awkward, but I think that its too random to be that, as I have had the thing apart and together again lots of times, and with different laser assemblies, but its an interesting thought, I might just check all the connections, would be good and annoying if it was that simple.
spindle motor???
if new laser did not cure the problem, if power supply is O.K. (check with oscilloscope for ripple), if outboard DAC does not change the situation...
have a look at or replace the spindle motor!

I presume that you mean the motor driving the disc (spindle motor) as this was on the new assembly, so presume its not that.
Does the fault alter at all if you hold the player at different angles while playing ? Even upside down if it will cope with that ?
One thing -- Are any of the chips eg DAC in sockets or are they soldered in ??

I don't know if you saw this. I edited my post after you replied.
If any are socketed, try pressing them down firmly into the socket.
You can also gently prise them out a little before pushing back down.

It's a valid test if you wondered 😉
If the problem is electronic such as DAC etc it won't alter.
If there is a signal problem it can just tip things such that the RF signal becomes clearer and the fault (distortion) changes.

Managed to gently tilt the player in all directions. apart from it losing the track a couple of times, the player's fault didnt sound any different, so could be Electronic then.
See if I can beg borrow or steel a DAC today.

The DAC is in a socket. The thing is that this player is supposed to have the TDA1541 but this player has obviously been modified as it has the TDA 1541A S1, so it must be the 'SE' version.
But I will definately try that with the DAC, see if I can prise it gently out and re-seat it.
Thanks for that, fingers crossed.
no joy on the loose DAC 🙁
Here are some pictures, not sure why, just thought you guys have been so helpful, might be nice to see what you are dealing with.

Tilt test showed nothing then... had to be done.
This sounds odd too... you see that coil with a ferrite core (do not attempt to turn it.
With CD playing if you "finger" the underside of the coil pressing your finger onto the area around it, does the audio improve ?
What that does is alter the tuning of the coil, again may or may not prove something. If the player throws a wobler just switch off and on again.
