Modern engines are wonders of precision. These days most cars will have their engines assembled by robots, put in the car, driven off the line onto a dyno. Run at full RPM to check power and emissions and driven to the factory lot. From there driven onto the transporter. driven off transporter at dealers. Driven into workshop for PDI. And at that point they put oil in the sump. Up until then running on assembly lube.

Anyone miss setting tappets every couple of months?

(super aside, my grandad was a master toolmaker at Rootes in coventry. My mum says she remembers the 3000 mile decokes he had to do on his car). I never met him 🙁

How do the hydraulic tappets work without oil to pump them up?

My first car was a 1955 Chevy Belair with a 235 (Iron Duke) six. I adjusted the tappets every couple of oil changes. I also rebuilt the engine every 60K miles due to driving it at 85-90m/h on I40. It only had three main bearings.

And driven onto ships, and off ships at the destination end, and then onto transporters, off the transporters and then into the dealer workshops?.
That seems like a lot of operating time without oil in the sump.
Got any references to this notion ?.

Dan.

There were worse, remember sell Christmas Cards and get this shiny new bike in weeks.
I fell for that one. Sold the cards door to door. The cards took forever to arrive and many of the orders were wrong. I still remember having go around the neighborhood to apologize to a lot of adults who had purchased the cards. No fun.

I don't think I've ever liked sales after that. 🙁

I did, neither proves nor disproves. In fact google has been exceedingly unhelpful so I'm having to go the old fashioned route and ask humans in the know.

And yes I made and extraordinary claim and I need to find evidence or accept I was duped. But as I heard this from at least 3 sources over the years its either a good urban legend or true. Ball in my court 🙂

Assembly lube is to prevent damage during assembly, and provide lubrication until oil is pumped through the galleries the first time (less than 20 seconds). Engines are not run without oil in them the factory.
