Burning Amp 2023!

I-5 would certainly not fit that description. Granted it's horrifically slow through Seattle but far from relaxing. Hwy 101 and 1 would be much better. I did that drive in the summer of 2000 as part of an epic road trip with a couple of friends. Good times.

I'll be flying. 2.5 hours from YYC to SFO then shuttle bus to Petaluma. Should be pretty smooth.

If there's interest I'm happy to swing by the build camp (ideally fashionably late after a hearty breakfast) and help out debugging builds. @6L6 or @Tom V let me know.

Heh. At TI the layout engineers would show up at 7AM. We design engineers would roll in around 9-10AM. That worked out really well. I loved rolling in and having the layout for the circuit I put on the layout guy's desk the night before mostly done and ready for simulation with layout parasitics extracted.

Tom

As I pointed out earlier, the 5 is by far the fastest route on the West. Most of it is quite easy to drive.. but then I'm used to 80+ mph on our California Fwys.

The worst part, by far, is through Portlandia (Columbia River to Salem). A normal afternoon on the 5 across Portland is as bad as a rainy Friday at 6PM on the San Bernardino Fwy (10E) with an overturned dump truck sigalert in Pomona. Last time we did it this last July, southbound from the Puget Sound we took the 405... lucky us... because there must have been an accident somewhere on the 5 bridge that shut down the entire freeways, both N and S. As a result, we drove through Portland, to the 205 in just over half an hour!

The second worst part is the stretch between the Grapevine and Santa Nella. That freeways should have been expanded to four lanes, the way it is along Camp Pendleton. As it is, we take SR99 between the Grapevine and SR50 in Sacramento.

101 is extremely slow. We only take the stretch in Central California to stop for food (Big Bubbah's Bad To The Bone BBQ in Paso Robles, Industrial Eats in Buellton) and wine ( all over ). Hwy 1 is for tourists and locals only.

TI must have had more hardware people... obviously. Nowadays, we don't have many "layout" engineers. It's all done with a computer... even the HW guys today do most of their work with computer tools in VHDL or RTL. But then, nowadays I deal with digital electronics.. everything is a "module" with a bunch of external registers for control and status. Throw in some timing and interrupts and ship it... "Maybe it'll work!"

I think putting together a simple PC board, something I have not done since the 90s, will be a huge breath of fresh air. Sort of like driving a clutch.

See you at 8:50AM on Saturday. I'm staying over at the Ritz Carlton Best Western next door.

Folks:

I've heard from more than one person about my Build Camp ticket. If you don't hear from me, please assume it's been taken.

Thanks to all (especially the very nimble Tom V) and best wishes for a terrific Burning Amp this weekend.

Regards.

Mike's workbooks for the Saturday seminar have arrived. This is a course that Nelson Pass requested for HIMSELF to learn LTSpice.

Saturday afternoon in Petaluma is where you want to be!

I have a spot in the build class, so I thought I could bring up a pair of 'sacrificial' speakers that my fellow builders could use for their first 'we have ignition (hope not)' hookup to hear the amps. My source I'll be using Sunday is a bit complex, so perhaps someone will have a cable to connect a phone with pleasant, optimistic music to welcome the new amps. I will have some suitable speaker wires.

I won't be able to attend in person this year, but ...

We’ve received a generous donation from Pace!

They've provided two of their ADS200 soldering stations for use during the build camp along with an assortment of tips. After the build camp, the kits will be auctioned with all the proceeds going to support BAF. Note - these are 110-120VAC units.

In addition, Pace is creating a special coupon code for all diyer's. The code will be provided at BAF. For those that cannot attend in person, I will post the code here.

Go sling some solder!

SOME ADDITIONAL INFO

BUILD CAMPERS. If you have a favorite soldering iron or multi-meter, bring it, but we should have all necessary tools to complete the build. Please be here by 9:30am on Saturday.

SATURDAY. We have some more elaborate systems which will be set up in CONF 2, so before and after the afternoon seminars you can listen to some music.

SUNDAY. If you have a project to display, please bring it and be here before 10:30. Remember power strips, extension cords, cables, sources. One of our volunteers (Variac?) will find you a spot and pair you up if you brought an amplifier, but not speakers, or vice-versa. Please make up a write-up of your project to display with it.

AUCTION, RAFFLE, and SWAP MEET. Burning Amp always has had fabulous donations and this year will be off the chart. Selected high-value items will be in the auction such as 3 production First-Watt amps, 15" woofer pairs, 2SK180. Tokin SITs. The list goes on and on. These items will be bid on by both those in-person and those on Zoom. Yes Zoomers, I will ship if you pay the shipping. International too! The raffle and swap meet is just for those in-person.

ZOOM. The virtual doors to the Zoom conference open at Noon PDT. We have a full afternoon schedule ending with auction at 5:30pm if we manage to run on time. Afterwards we will leave the Zoom conference up so that you can chat amongst yourselves.
