Building process - The loudspeaker 1

All Right, time to spill the beans and share my latest experiment.

In the last year hearing the TL2 Loudspeaker had me convinced that this is the 'one' speaker to rule them all.
There was however a big but.... the size of the speaker made most Audiophiles who came to hear them giggle and say "Well, that's awesome- but no way I can bring something like this home-my wife will kill me".
I agree, they are huge, So I sold the unfinished cabinets and went on a quest to build a hybrid. instead of the 18inch 155Liter, I have installed a 12inch in sealed cabinet at 50Liter.
Two things happend:
-I lost the huge sensation of space provided by the 18inch.
-I gain in speed punch and bass articulation.

Seems like the the gap between 10inch and 18inch membrane is really is a big deal. Squeezing a 12inch- the BMS 12n630 really did helped a lot- especially in my 28Sqm room.

Now- I will not part with the BMS 18n860- No way- I am building subwoofers to help with the low octave- This time going for 120Liter Sealed Cabinets- I have heard what a sealed cabinet can do- and it is addictive...

For all the reasons in the world I would like to make a commercial speaker out of the TL2-Baby. Which I no call Ho baby!
But alas, It is still not my creation and all credit goes to the master Troels Gravesen.
I though and still think that the design could be a blast- TL2 sound in retro vintage looking box. Ho well...

So, here are the CAD drawings, As I right it down I'm working on the veneer.

So, what do you guys think?
BTW- The drawings are made using google Skethcup. The latest Innovation is a small A.I. taking the render work load. unfortunately the A.I. is still too creative for my taste and is doing whatever the **** he wants with the Sketches- So I guess we can assume that he will soon direct its creativity on taking over the earth an enslave us puny humans.

Looks beatiful as always!
The BMS in 155litre ported doesnt go deep enough !
120litre sealed they need TONS of power to play loud. And don’t go deep at all.
I can imagine that 10or 12” Plays better in the upper bass but you will be missing something down deep, that’s for sure.(with sealed 18” BMS sub)

Those are my thoughts after playing around a lot with TL2/3 build🙂

Thank you Theo for your thoughts.
I have tried lots of combinations with the 12N630, great great driver no wonder Troels uses it so often. It has a fs of 28.6, so with ported cabinet (50Liter) it can really dig deep. But... I also tried it different configuration of sealed, and got something I never heard before in my room. The Tl2 has transformed from huge presentation to ultra precise loudspeaker.
The sealed cabinet has still 50Liters, giving impressive transient response.

All this is controlled using the hypex FA501. If I will feel it's lacking in power I can replace it with FA502 bridge mode.

BTW, seems like the Goebel divin marquise subwoofers also uses the BMS 18n862. They are using it in 110Liter volume closed cabinet. (30,000€)!! But with more power. I have to try it!

resemblance to this suggestion is probably just casual 😊
Thank you Stv, and true, your suggestion crawled finely from the unconscious back to creative power, so you were right, breaking the Form really does help. I am using Google sketchup as CAD. they have a nice new plug in for rendering using A.I.. the background photo was and Alps photo I took from Google. Amazing what the A.I render can do with it...

I also love the driver! I have tried it in ported ~170litre TL2/3, Sealed 100 litre and around 120 litre. Even open baffle right now 50-200hz.

I used 2 bridged FA502s for the two 18" and in sealed boxes, the amps had a very hard time when the sound levels was high and ideed I couldnt get it to play very deep. I have a 4x18" AE dipole "rig" as a reference.

Would be interesting to know what changes Göbel did to the BMS driver to make them play 10 hz or even close to that 🤔

I can imagine the sound from the 12" you use, might be something to try for myself in the future, Keep your finish as high as normally and you will have something very beautiful!

Ok, that something I would like to read more about. Can you elaborate on your sealed experience with them? How low did you reach? I am ready to sacrifice deep bass for better transiets and articulation. But it would be great reaching 31-33hz.
I seriously doubt goebel reaching as low as 10hz , I would say mission impossible from a 110Liter sealed cabinet. I heard them in Munich and thought, I know that sound, but haven't made the connection.

How does open baffel works for you? That would be awsome to try....

About the 12N630, all I can say, go for it, it really makes for a nice bridge

Where does The Loudspeaker 1/2 normally cross into the bass? With a 10" playing 1khz and below, what's the plan for a 12? Decoupling bass from the tower should be nice anyways, but I'm curious what a new woofer's duties would be at that point. 80-300hz?

Love the design work as always.

Thank you D1sco
The 18N862 originally low pass is at 200hz.
The 12N630 has taken its place crossing at 180hz and will be relieved at 60hz.

The 12N630 can do stuff the 18N862 can't and vice versa. It will be interesting to get everything ticking together

Wow! Beautiful. Just beautiful.
Thank you!
I am also excited about this one! Finally a speaker I can movee around without breaking my back!!! But actually, who am I kidding?!? Just started the subwoofers project with 47mm plywood, cannot wait lift it up the stairs.

At leas the 18N862 is going to feel at home 😉

Ps- planning to overdoing it until I'm reaching my 50th.

I thought my 29mm ply was alerady overkill... 😛
There is always an idiot (me) who will over over kill it...
I use wood biscuits and ordinary wood glue.

For those who want to have fast cure time one can use Allcon 10 (Beka).
It is brutal glue comes in tubes like silicon and will cure in 10min. It I stronger then wood glue and will fill gaps if you didn't quit got a perfect cut (up to 1mm gaps- no problem).

Thinking about a base for subs... are you using any granite slabs? Or something similar? The subs are going to be placed on floating wood floor so I want to decouple them as best I can
