Building an open embedded audio applicance.

lykkedk: There are 4 components in the chain...

1) BBB as the source of I2S/DSD digital audio, it requires external clock
2) Hermes-BBB as the two-way signal isolator (clock signal in, audio data signals out, I2C in-out) and I2S/DSD switch
3) Cronus as the master clock signal provider and re-aligner of data signals from BBB to the master clock; there are two clocks available, one for 44.1kHz and other one for 48kHz frequency families
4) DAC as consumer of re-aligned data signals (and clock if needed)

This is a real help, clearing it all up.

I am a bit out of digital stuff at the moment, but i guess that a reclocking of BBB is only needed, if one have to play/use DSD ?

DQ828: assuming that you have wifi dongle in bbb installed, then this is just software thing... you can install any SW that will enable this... e.g. pulse audio, shairport, mopidy, etc. ... there is also my script bbbplay that allows to play upsampled audio file from another linux machine

This seems pretty exciting, I think. I'm wondering if this has morphed into, or has remained?, a project for sophisticated DIY types?

Once the boards and "plans" are available, I would love it if someone could drop a note to inform interested builders whether this project is suited for "less sophisticated" builders or is the domain of the sophisticated builder.

I'm hoping that Leon van Bommel will write an integration guide for this/these projects, too! 😕 Leon did a terrific job of describing the Buffalo III.

However this shakes out, it's been exciting to track. Thanks Russ and Brian! (and Miero and . . . .!)

Unfortunately the outcome is not going to work for me - in its original Cape form would have been perfect but....

However I have learned a lot from this thread and miero's thread. I will still be working on options for the BBB, possibly using the S03 or a simple, single, low jitter external clock using SOX software to resample to 48k or 96k to feed my miniSHARC.

Will continue to watch developments with interest - never say never!

I'm still clinging on to the hope I can somehow have a stand alone device (DAC/Preamp) with internal storage (SATA SSD attached) and a touch screen that can be used to display and control the music, then have a remote control via a smart phone.

You could use a USB/SATA adapter to do just that. The BBB is running Linux, so you can write any user interface you want, or just use off the shelf software for control.
 
Yes, that is an example of "off the shelf" commercial software, which has many features that free software does not have (yet).

But there is also free alternative of course... 🙂)

I'll integrate UPnP MediaRenderer (gmediarender) into the next Botic release. Then you will be able to "render" sound remotely to the BBB via network.

For example, there is UPnPlay android application than can do that (and many others too).
