Wonder what those 0.0047K things is, properly inductors or something even worse
That's a wound polyester cap. Polyester can be pretty good is stacked film, but wound is bad.
caps
I have been tweaking my design and it's certainly worthwhile to try several types of filter caps. My design isn't the Buffalo, but I can hear differences between caps in my design. You guys should try several and pick out the one you like best. You will find some are good... and some will suck the life out of your music.
Here are some that I have tried and confirm they sound good.
Panasonic ECQ-P(Z) polypropylene film caps at DigiKey.
http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/T083/P1686.pdf
WIMA FKP2 at Mouser.
http://www.mouser.com/catalog/636/835.pdf
There are lots of very expensive caps at some audiophile web sites, and I haven't tried many of them, and I'nm not sure they are worth the expense.
The Panasonic ECQ-P(Z) is being discontinued at DigiKey and I don't know what Panny is going to replace it with.
If anyone likes another type, please post it. 😀

I currently use Evox PFR5 in 10nf for C1-4 and C13-16 http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=getProduct&R=2404690
I'm thinking of replacing all the 10nf's to 4n7's
Anbody compare the Evox PFR against others? did anybody try the polyester ECQ's?

I use the Wima FKP2's as well, and am happy with them. I think the resolution of the Sabre chip is so high that it's particularly revealing of changes to other components.
I'm using the wima FKPs too - just lucky I had a bag of them left over from a misorder when I made my phonoclone.....
Yes, they sound good.

Brian how do i know what version I am on?
Brian, you probably missed this, but I guess I need to know so I can set the notch filter switch correctly?
Many thanks,
Russ

I'm not Brian but, the Buffalo version is on the lower right
next to the mounting hole. Mine shows as 'V.1.0'.

woodturner-fran, please email me – as a new member here, I'm under moderation and cannot email anyone. I'm interested in such boards.

Brian, to what module are you referring to and where in the circuit?

I now have some Wima FKP2 4n7's and also some Evox PFR 4n7's
I don't have FKP2 in 10nf
I'd like to compare these using the latest mod, can somrbody please confirm if I can use 4n7 for C1-4 as well as C13-16?

It will work just fine. 🙂 No worries.

I think that both the PCB and the PIC are marked.
Only a few of the "1.1" version PCBs shipped with the "9-bit" firmware. For anyone with one of those just keep switch 3 low and you will be golden. 🙂
Cheers!
Russ
Did anybody notice the red Wima FKP2 improved after running in? I've just fitted 4n7 in C1-4 and C13-16 , I'm finding it to sound sibilant

Be sure you are also jumpering R17-R20 (can short the pins of each if they are already installed).

Thanks Brian, I'll try it now😀
Its better with those resistors linked! its still got some sibilance but not as bad, I'll leave it running and see if it improves , if not I'll try the 4n7 Evox PFR5

I don't know how you guys know about FKP2 0.01uf .
I have used them for digital section and got good results.
they are high resolution and with extended highs.
In the mean time, the sound is not too tight as some other square CAPs.
However, it's only applicable for High speed applications.
They are totally useless in analog section except for filter.
