I prefer the real thing!
Another splendid performance by Bradsell at the Curragh in the Flying Five (Furlongs).
Believing and Makarova get 3 Lb allowance because they are fillies, FWIW.
The air turned blue in da Bookies when horse Believing lost AGAIN! Cost my foolish fellow punter £130 over the Nunthorpe and the Flying Five. Naturally I was on the pocket rocket Bradsell again, and for good measure took a sure fire place on Kerdos at a best odds of 16-1 equating to 3-2 on my 2 pound stake. My friends who listened to me about Bradsell and the ace stayer Kyprios were also in the money on a double. I told them 3-y-o Jasour was too green to do well also, he bumped the stalls right at the start. The races I often misjudge are the mile and 1m 4f... I think O'Brien fixes them! He often has two contestants and a pacemaker. Bedtime Story and Henri Matisse disappointed in the other two big Group 1 races that afternoon
This is worth watching if you like the sprinters. 3rd, 5th and 6th are worth a punt if they can stay away from Bradsell, Believing and Kerdos in the Ascot Champions meeting soon.
Amusingly, Hollie Doyle had a complete bust at Brighton yesterday back down in lowly Class 5 and 6 races. She was up against failed 6-y-o hurdlers like son of famous Derby winner Galileo, Laser Force who had been switched back to the flat after a failed career in National Hunt.
Me and my friend Bernie have decided to stick to better horses and meetings in future! I do best on un-handicapped Group 1 and 2 races, where I at least know the horses. But I didn't mind watching Laytown (Ireland) Beach racing on Monday, which was novel. 😀

A generally disastrous weekend on the essential and exciting Arc meeting for yours truly. I somehow forget that Paris is always a BOG in October. Only consolation was I got Friendly Soul at 9-1 in the 16.05 Prix De L'Opera.
How did I miss that Filliies and Geldings are the stamina Mudlarks in Heavy Going? Fillies Makarova, Bluestocking, Friendly Soul and Ramatuelle upset the applecart.
Hollie Doyle thought she had a good race in Red on Bradsell in the 5F sprint, until husband Tom Marquand in Blue overtook her on Makarova at a tasty 14-1? She called Makarova a MUDLARK! Well, exactly!
I think Desperate Hero is going at Ascot in 10 days time, while everything else good is going abroad for the big dollars. That was Makarova's last race. A fine swansong. 😛

An excellent day following York and Newmarket's season ending flat finales at our local pub "Horse Club" gathering.
I got three winners and a place at good odds. I was particularly proud of having an each way wager on good ol' Euchen Glen, even if each way doesn't get you much. An 11-y-o gelding that has mixed it creditably with the big boys like Trawlerman over the years.
It can still hack it in the boggy ground, just like old jumps horses also do. The handicapper was kind to it IMO.
A very near miss in the Fillies Stakes race. I had Marine Wave (which was carrying a worisome 3Lb penalty for a win at Group level) and Funny Story for the win. I had dismissed Alfa Kellenic, which despite winning its last 6 races hadn't really run against anything good.
The odds are very important in these investments. I thought Rage of Bamby was about 7-2, so missed the obvious value when it went out to 10-1! Oh well.
The last hurrah of the turf is next weekend at Ascot Champions day:
https://www.attheraces.com/racecard/Ascot/19-October-2024/1315
It's going to be boggy again. So fillies and geldings again. Kyprios against Trawlerman. City of Troy running despite the ground. 6 top races to cap off the season.
You can tell I am excited. AND SO SHOULD YOU BE! 🤣

My buddy Bernie summoned me to a Horse Club meeting yesterday at the local watering hole. I was not keen to lose money on stupid handicaps at Brighton and Southwell with local horses and jockeys I have never heard of, but indulged him.
I felt relieved to escape with a loss of £5 on £15 invested entirely on winners. I had two second favourites around 5-1. |I keep telling him that each-way is a waste of money unless the bookies are paying 5 at least.
1/5 of the odds on three places = 40% loss by my maths!
And look at this result we were supposed to decipher:
World of Darcy shouldn't have been in this race! It's a Class 4 (OR 60-70) handicapper against Class 6 (OR 40-50) donkeys. That's why it's carrying TWO STONE more than the lesser brethren.
If in doubt, bet on a jockey you respect. The owner has paid extra money for his services! I lost a pound on Fai Fai with the excellent Rhys Clutterbuck riding. Bernie made 60p on his Tomorrow Day £2 EW. A dismal result all round, IMO.
THIS RACE SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN PLACE IMO.
More horrors earlier with the 15.50. I was feeling smug about a pound on Chourmo, a local favourite horse:
Where did Cresta Cat come from? That nag came last in it's last three races! It's never won a race in its miserable existence...
https://www.attheraces.com/form/horse/Cresta-Cat/GB/3514177?raceid=1466398
I think somebody put amphetamine in its carrots! Brighton is full of crooks IMO. I notice somebody has reduced its OR by 10 points from 70 with a huge losing streak in Class 4 and 5 to get this one.
Ah well. Ascot on Saturday. Top horseflesh running in the 6F sprint:
https://www.attheraces.com/racecard/Ascot/19-October-2024/1355
I fancy Mill Stream, Beauvatier the French raider, and Clive Cox's James's Delight at goodish odds. I hate favourites. My trusty guide below:
Can't wait! 😀

A generally disastrous Ascot meeting for "The Man the Bookies Love". 🙁
Kind of Blue (Miles Davis, IIRC) won the sprint at 10/1, whilst most of the other races went to short favourites like Kyprios, Charyn and Kalpana. Oh well. Every day a school day.
Further news of the mysterious nag, Cresta Cat, shock 66/1 winner at Brighton recently. It won again at a more modest 13/2 despite the handicapper piling a few more pounds and a future increased OR (Official Rating) on it.:
Another nag on my watch list, World of Darcy opened at 10/11, but slipped to 3/1 in the 15.13. I think the word had got out. It finished a poor 6th out of 8, carrying a 6Lb penalty.
Sergeant Pep, a previously indifferent 3-y-o handicapper, is also on my watchlist, as are several Clive Cox horses. Especially 2-y-o ones which are his speciality, and always worth a look.
I had a nice little earner on him at 10/1 when I thoughtfully wondered why Clive would drag the poor thing all the way up to Haydock near Liverpool from his southern Newbury stable.
He actually had an entry at Doncaster this Saturday too, but is now whittled down to three. I suppose he can't be everywhere. 🤣
If you flog a horse into two runs close together, you often avoid a win penalty from the handicapper on the subsequent race. Whatever is Clive up to? We shall see. 😀

Admit it. You want to know what happened to Sergeant Pep! 😛
Things were going swimmingly at Horse Club in my local hostelry on Friday.
I already had Spirit of Farhh at 6/1 and Mercian Warrior at 7/2 on my £3.50 E/W Patent 3 way accumulator. I took early prices.
Just needed Sergeant Pep to do the business for me and I was thinking £100.
But NO!!!
Damned nag came third, as did another of his nags, Star Anthem, and won £3,800 for Clive Cox. But only £20 for me. 🙁
If it hadn't entered, I would have had Capote's Dream, and been better off. Still, £20 was OK for my day. Mustn't grumble. 🙂
I wasn't planning a trip to da Bookies on Monday, but lookie here:
I must see what the opposition is like this time before investing. But one smells another COUP for Cocaine Cresta Cat!!! 🤣

In another one of those "You heard it here first moments", I can reveal that "Cocaine" Cresta Cat won again:
The horse seems to have retired to Marbella for the winter with its ill-gotten gains, doubtless beyond the drug-testing ability of the BHA (British Horseracing Association).
In more shock news, woeful Soccerists Manchester United have sacked their gloomy coach Erik Ten Hag and made Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim "An Offer He Can't Refuse" to join them immediately.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/crez8vyr7yjo
We shall not miss Ten Hag. And it could have been worse. They might have forced Gareth Southgate into the job that nobody wants. Quite honestly, I could have done a better job of managing England than Gareth.
Everybody Excited about the Breeder's Cup Races tonight. I have a full card of Irish and British nags. Bradsell, Cindarella's Dream, Notable Speech, Rebel's Romance, and here City of Troy enjoying a trot at Del Mar near San Diego. I am sure he will stay classy, as they say there. 🤣
I even have a long-shot American horse, Skelly. Can't wait! 😎

Australia has the famous "Melbourne Cup" on Tuesday, possibly more important to some than the 'other' event happening on the 5th...
The Cup attracts many, many thousands of people who enjoy the event, fashion and vast amount of booze which seems to be an integral part of the day. On the Thursday, "Oaks Day" is regarded as the fashion highlight of the week and even more booze is consumed: my wife and I went one year as guests in the "Paddock" and you could get half sloshed just breathing. There were bodies in the hedges and rose gardens, even a bit of bonking here and there.
All that aside, the best part is that we get a public holiday and it's the one day of the year when we place a bet - always unsuccessfully. However, a bloke I used to work with, who also only punted once a year, once took out a "Mystery Bet" and won the 'trifecta' - which netted him around A$9,000 tax free for a $10 outlay.

I made a grand £1.10 over two days at Del Mar. So not my worst weekend. 🙂
Got a winner with Rebel's Romance, and two long odds places on Aomori City and Arizona Blaze.
I was, of course, kicking myself I didn't check the long shots in the Sprint. Starlust at 20-1 got bumped into the rails in Paris, which I hadn't noticed, so was good value.
He is usually around 6-1 in these things.
Young Believing took the long walk of withdrawn shame before the sprint for rearing up in the stalls and causing chaos and minor injury.
The race was a cracker, with Cogburn (here in front) and Bradsell (In red) both fading badly. Starlust survived a bit of bumping and an inquiry to burst through out of the turn on the rail.
I know what the Melbourne Cup is @GeoffMillar. It's a 2 mile handicap with a huge field of 24 so lots of bumping, and the inside draw is often important! Horrible races to predict!
https://www.racingpost.com/racecards/297/flemington/2024-11-05/876243/
In the UK, we always fear the Willie Mullins' jumps-bred plodders in distance flat races with difficult going. Distance usually suits geldings and old horses.
But Absurde and Vauban didn't do much last year,,,
I see that O'Brien's fancied Jan Brueghel is scratched after a vet check, which is quite right because I hate seeing horses get hurt in races like this.
These are usually a favourites sort of race IMO. I think a £1 EW on the lightweight, Sea King, with Miss Hollie Doyle in the seat for a place in history... but I dunno...
Sea King lost to a lovely 11-y-o plodder called "Not So Sleepy" in heavy going last time I watched it. The rain was bucketing down. I made a tenner that day! 🤣

system7, are you glad it was worth the systematic pain and suffering from the horses involved in your enjoyment and meagre financial gain?I made a grand £1.10 over two days at Del Mar. So not my worst weekend. 🙂
@tobydog, certainly not. I hope for FAR MORE money in the Melbourne Cup!
Here Hollie Doyle and William Buick (Nice jacket and shirt!) take in the local sights, before the race:
Buick is good enough that he can pick his races, and has a higher success rate than most. Lacking knowledge of local horses, I have been refining my fancies:
Onesmoothoperator ( in the blue stripey helmet, no. 11) looks worth an EW side-wager. He is thriving and winning in Oz, as is Sea King.
Conditions look quite good for the UK and Ireland horses. A comfortable 15C, cloudy and a breeze.
You can tell I am taking this seriously. 🤣

Forecast for Melbourne today is maximum 26C, so rather warm. I do hope the horses will finish safely and there won't be any injuries to them or their riders; several Cups have ended badly and no-one wants to see that.
The jockeys in the photo are standing next to the Yarra River, once so dirty it was called 'the river that flows upside down'. A bit cleaner these days, thanks to stricter environmental laws.

Trivia: in Race Six today (one race before the Cup), there's a horse named "Jimi Hendrix" - if it had been in the big race I would naturally have placed a bet!
Geoff
Geoff
Why wasn't I informed of the weather earlier? Far too hot for our UK and Ireland horses! We like it cold and rainy... 🙁
Jimi Hendrix was scratched by the look of things. I know this horse. Not a bad 'un as it goes, but a Miler. Won a big one versus another memorable one, Sonny Liston IIRC.
Pretty good race IMO:
I lost my shirt, of course, but can afford £8 and am not a sore loser. Hollie Doyle was slow out of the stalls and never recovered. Only Absurde (in the pink cap) had a good day. I am sure the prize money was deep.
1st, 2nd and 5th all came from the back in the last two furlongs having just tried to run a steady race and hope for a bit left at the end. It wasn't a slow race by Melbourne standards.
Warp Speed from Japan probably was the best performance under its weight, IMO. But well done to the Kiwi horse.
I used to have a rule. Never bet on handicaps. Never bet on favourites. Shame I don't listen to myself.
A legendary result, IMO. And a good day for the bookies. 🤣

Some nice stories to come out of this Melbourne cup.A 100/1 winning horse trained by Kiwi trainer Sheila Laxon who now has two wins from two starts and the Irish Jockey Robbie Dolan who moved to Australia and who was very good a contestant on The Voice Australia.
Why would this have been an extremely good £3.50 ticket to own yesterday at Lingfield all-weather track?
Here's the results:
My mate Bernie, who likes this bet, has worked out it would have payed £31,000,000! Shame we didn't meet up for our occasional Horse Club at the Pub then, though I had £1 EW on a Clive Cox loser anyway.
Actually, Epsom Faithfull at 100/1 could have been seen coming. It did well in a Class 1 7F race last year. The switch to 1m 2F would suit a 7-y-o horse.
3-y-o Ashford Hill at 125/1 was so out of its class, it didn't even get its full weight allowance of about 2 stones. Maybe it is now happier at its new stables. Maybe they give it more Polo mints and carrots?
Destinado at 10/1 won comfortably last time out, and defied a 5Lb penalty.
Always gamble responsibly is the message I am getting here. 🤣
