Thanks! Excellent idea! I love that there's layout posted earlier in this thread, so I can draw it on my vero for a speedy shortcut.Daniel, why not try building the thing and then see if you can hear a difference between the devices on your short list ?
Any ideas on which of the schematics I should use for it?

You appear to be spoiled for choice and I don't feel that one layout is better than the other - although rather than Vero I'd be tempted to go for a 'real' pcb.
I suspect Christian (Ranchu32) has some boards left over which he'd happily provide a pair for you to use if you contact him although his boards had an error that needs to be fixed (post 101).
For Vero, a single sided layout might be an easier place to start though - there's one by Sonal that looks just the ticket (post 125).

Nailed it. Before I even got around to worrying about it.
This: https://www.onsemi.com/pub/Collateral/MJL0281A-D.PDFThe 0281 is way better for low voltage operation. Compare the iIV curves. The C5200 types (all of them) have pretty significant beta drop at low Vce....

Really happy that wg_ski made that comment, before I ordered parts.
NJW versions of the right parts were actually on my desk--an unusual convenience indeed!
