Best 8 inch woofer?

Excatly! I would look for AudioTechology drivers if I realy need an top high end or an 7" ScanSpeak Iluminator WU serie. My next speaker project which I have planing for a long time is 4 bass drivers per cabinet, 2/2 in series for 8ohm, and top end with RAAL 70-20, looking for drivers so that it form enought room for RAAL to get no attenuation at all, only one capacitor for tweeter. Thinking about to try Kartesian midwoofers, it looks very promissing! Audax HM170G8 is definitely my choice for that project, but I'm looking for something which will be available for a longer time, Audax manufacture not exist for a long time and to be honest I have no idea who manufacturing today HM serie : )

Edit: take a look for JA8008-HMQ , nice 8" speaker!

AudioTechnology drivers is an infallible choice! Even he can make custom drivers per your parameters! https://audiotechnology.dk/flexunits/
And sometimes it turns out to be cheaper to buy 500eur drivers than to experiment and wander around with some other cheaper drivers. Combine them with an high end tweeter, which is the most important, and satisfaction is guaranted. I would pay attention to JA8008-HMQ for an high end 8" driver, well made, not expensive, great low/mid if AudioTechnology is not an cheap option. For those who looking for great sound and not care much about paid reviews or agresive marketing.

Take a look https://www.troelsgravesen.dk/JA8008-HMQ.htm its suitable for simple first order crossover and very high eficiency, nice driver.

Combine them with for example this one beast https://www.raalribbon.com/products_flatfoil_70-10.htm and you are done for a long time. I can confirm what that page says. Directivity is the only isue but if you are in love with music and you are in listening position you will enjoy it a lot! I found myself rewinding the same track for a while because I couldn't believe I was hearing some detail in a song I liked so I rewind a few times to make sure what I was hearing, amazing speaker, smooth like a buter! : )

Interesting, that quite a few people mention that the RS225 is sometimes not chosen, simply because it is old and to many use it in their design :LOL: Quality and output is great, but people seem to want something different, but equally good or better.
Seas Prestige has a less optimum motor, which fits with it being just as old - but at the same price - actually a bit more. And the raw alu look, is not that easy to mate with a black midrange/tweeter or coax.
Since I aim to cross around 400Hz - none of the fancy/expensive details of the "better" drivers really matter. The room is acoustically dominant here, and we just wish to move air and handle power - with few hick-ups - since we are also less prone to even hear distortion at these frequencies.
Scan-speak 22W Discovery, do seem to have around 10dB less distortion below 2-300hz - compared to Wavecor WF223BD02. But can we hear it?

Anything I left out?

I can reccomend one very cheap and relaxy sounding driver https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/approx-8-woofers/silver-flute-w20rc38-08-8-wool-cone/ . well made driver, I have 6.5" 16ohm paraleled for 8 ohm, its my current speakers for everyday for a two years right now, nice sound. PMC like : )

Mid=HiVi DMB-A
tweeter= HiVi Q1R

It was hard to pair drivers and getting it in perfect phase, as you can see on picture a bit complicated crossover, but final result is very good! Step files I have made later so plase pay attention a bit since I didn't made speakers for seccond time, migh be some wrong dimensions on front and eventualy some other bugs! If sound is too bright replace mid and tweet resistors with e.g. 3.8/3.8 + 4.5/4.5 ohm, example. I'm added some pots to fine adjust dynamic. : )

There is the new SIG225, which is supposed to be an improvement over the RS225, if 4 ohms is acceptable
https://www.soundimports.eu/en/dayton-audio-sig225-4.html
Not sure if they are "better", there are tradeoffs.

The Signature Series drivers are more sensitive but don't quite reach as low as the Reference Series.

Signature Series tame the cone breakup a little better.

I have not seen any direct distortion comparisons.
