OK, I reproduced your results with play:
I think your issue point to hw issues...
The thing is, when I do the speaker test I get output, hiss, so there seems to be a path through to the dac!??
I will try the speaker test again.
To be continued. 🙄
Don't know if this has any bearing on the no play problem, when I now go into ympd {http://192.168.1.4:8080/#/browse/0/} Connection refused keeps flashing up in right hand corner.
So, I'm at Bot.v3 and play /tmp/MUSIC1/Track01.wav is playing. Yeah 😀 !!!
However, BII dac led LOCK is off, and led 'EN' on the Hermes is also off 😕 ?
How are the clock modes set and how do I get to them???

Changed snd_soc_botic.ext_masterclk to 3
the EN led does come on but, now play errors again

Technically speaking - a properly mounted a correctly soldered Hermes (if you short all the header pins for example you will be in trouble) won't effect the BBB boot process in the least.
Assuming you have no issues with your BBB it will boot the same way regardless of the presence of the Hermes. 🙂
Frank as you are generating a lot of posts - you might get more focussed results if you open your own thread - if you do post some pictures and such so we can help identify potential issues.
Cheers!

Russ,
I think you might have meant that I am the one generating a lot of posts re: my no play problem. True? 😉

Good luck, ichiban! When I saw that error message I thought of your situation...
BTW, I have Element 14 BBBs. Elsewhere on the web I have read that changing from BBBs by Element 14 to ones manufactured by Circuitco resolved inexplicable software problems. For me, sound = 😀

As requested by Russ, I am starting this thread on my ongoing problem getting the BBB/Botic to play.
Many software solutions have been tried and I have now started to investigate possible/likely hardware cause of the no play.
I've attached pictures of the build as requested and will also disassemble boards to reheat solder joints on all the connectors.

Hi Ichiban,
Thanks for starting the new thread.
It is hard to say from the pictures - but some of the solder joints on both the hermes and bbb headers look like they could use a touch up with flux - they don't look like they have flowed well to the pads - some look like they could be a dry joint.

Gave all connections a hit. Still no go. I'm on Bot3 will go to Bot5 again, just for laughs

Try switching sample rates between 44.1 and 48
How do I do that? Switch hardware clocks?
You could try that too - but I just meant play 44.1 material and say 48khz or 96khz material. So that you test both clocks.

Son of a gun!!!!!!!! Music from Mieros test files that he has on Bot3 but as far as I know aren't on Bot5.
Now I have the 45mHz clock in the outboard position which is E1, no?
Oh! The test_96k_24b.flac file doesn't play?
/data/test/test_48k_16b.flac does play???
Maybe something that was in Bot3 that doesn't switch right?

Yes - X1 is for the 44.1 ratio clock (45Mhz in your case)
16 vs 24 bit should not matter at all.
Try 44.1 multiple material too.
No, test_44k1_16b.flac
doesn't play, none of my 16bit 44k1 cd rips did either.
