Bad news for Ripole sub builders :-(

@Monteverdi ,

I have the non opposing ripole. I have no clue at which frequency it would resonate. I don't go higher than 60hz. I do have a peak at 37hz, but suppose that's room mode related.

Looking at the difference between the designs I would think the two driver ripole will have less resonance. Both drivers push against eachother. Whilst in the single one the driver pushes against the enclosure. And at that point it is a rather large surface.

A ripole from 30 to 150hz seems rather a stretch to me.

Regards, Hajo

After finding the right front and back ports surfaces, I intend to make a box less tall, but wider, to fit underneath my system
Will the dipole effect be the same, considering that I keep the optimum surfaces ports?

^^ I don't think the change would be noticeably if at all any unless its a drastic change. May be you can compare with combined output for both cases in Hornresp.

Interesting to see how some long excursion small 5inch driver like Tangband W5 1138 will do under desk!
I am not so excited with the sims for W5 so I will defer this project for a while.

With this position, I intend to overlapp over 150 Hz with the low bass of the ob and to compensate with the right phase and delay on the dsp the loss of the back side of the ob
Since it is a small cavity with SLS Peerless 10”, I hope that the resonance will be over 150Hz
It is a long shot, but it worth to try

So I finally put together the Ripole enclosures.... With two Beyma 12BR70's per enclosure.

Surprisingly good results. I had the Beymas in an open-back configuration before, they were OK really, but I was intrigued by the Ripole so made a pair.

The Ripoles are subjectively playing much deeper, with more authority (if that's the correct description).
The measurements are also self-telling - attached below. The peak is at 330 Hz, exactly the same in both and slightly higher than I expected, based on what I read here from other users. Which is good in fact, allows more useable FR.

And the boxes are 1/2 the size (of the old ones they were in).

Now repurposing the old boxes for a different project....

Measurements: Green is the Ripole, and Red is the original OB system, BOTH measured near-field (at different times, so not 100% sure about the relative SPL, but subjectively the levels are very similar).

Thanks @diyiggy .

Right now with a DSP notch @ 330 Hz, Q 2.5, G - 10 dB, on top of 120 Hz LP LR24: pretty easy and clean - ...but this is only the first hours, just for testing.
After reassembling, finishing etc, which will take some time, I might try a passive notch. Will see what the parts bin will say 🙂
