Audionote Japan (Kondo) Ongaku... Can I Clone to DIY!

I have worked on both the Audio Marginal Ongaku clone and several original Audio Note Ongaku - will say both sounded very good, and oddly enough I think I very slightly preferred the Audio Marginal in my system which had Magnequest output transformers - IIRC 10K instead of 16K. Electrically the two were near identical. I believe the AM made significantly more power as well. Both extremely well built amplifiers.

Thomas you got a good price on yours, around here last time I knew with heavy discounting they were around $65K. Still I can't imagine spending this amount of money on any amplifier.

I wish you luck in cloning the output transformer, further than that I can't comment. (I used to service AN Japan products.)

I admired and thought Kondo was brilliant.

hi kevinkr,

I was using clearaudio + gold finger with Kondo ( Phone amp with silver MC transforrmers).

power amp was Onagku 211 ( Kondo).

as your comment, I bought all amps but this did not means I can clone for it. I hope to use my knowledge of japan audi transformers from tango to clone for it. Ongaku 211 opt WAS complicated but will not too different to clone. difficult was I cannot use silver foil + telfon sheet hand made for the couple cap.

Kondo caps for Ongaku I had only two on hand for myself to clone & test performance about it. But mainly was I can use original kondo 211 compare with my clone ongaku, right.

hope not too bad sound.

this is my 2 pcs of original kondo caps.

thx

thomas

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

clone Ongaku 211 Outlook. Use copper plate & call large copper wall picture company to coated some material( they did not told me) to prevent oxidzed.

thx

Hi Thomas,
Looks pretty cool. Yeah those Kondo caps are pretty special and rather hard to make, but along with the wire perform very well - more than a little too my surprise.

Your "temporary" transformer looks very nice. You made it as 10K or 16K primary? It was marked 10K wasn't it? The 16K results in higher damping factor, lower thd, at the expense of significantly less power.

hi all friend,

since I made totally over 30 test sample of Ongaku OPT ( compare to Original one) for data only because original one was too expensive. I test original one & compare to original data ( test menu ) or real Ongaku & finally use the expensive 3M telfon paper for layered material because this 10 ~16K OPT will not easy to make.

I was so happy because finally one was use 0.15mm lamination. + 3M telfon paper with full balance X-winding (full balance x-winding need seperate into two chamber & X-cross connect to lower the capactance).

now test was very good , so Clone Ongaku will come soon & will compare sound quality to original one!

take a look for test result!

thx

thomas

hi Gluca,

this is under standard OPT test method to test!.

I use sample method to test real Ongaku,

OPT manufactory method was same as Ongaku, seperate into two chambers, same layers in two chambers, full balance winding, DCR was very close too( because Kondo Ongaku was AG wire, I must considerate into it.

take a look of real Kondo Ongaku OPT!

thx

thomas
