It's not suprising, At least in the UK Apogee never sold in huge numbers and Ribbons in general were not popular, probably because Ivor and Julian didn't make them!

I think the full rangers, although wonderful, were just a bit too odd for the DIY crowd to take to heart in huge numbers. Had there been more hybrids around or had the OB movement been in full swing then maybe there would have been more activity.

Having said that, it seems that most apogee owners are very happy and there don't appear to be hundreds of them sitting forlornly unloved and destined for scrap.

I would love to be able to order some of the new speakers Graz makes, but just out my budget.

Of course the interesting thing is that, with Graz replacement ribbons you could build a minor or major copy, so taking a major problem out. Brave souls have made their own planar bass units I know and I would love to try sometime, just now.

But with at least one OB hybrid apogee on the loose now, and another to follow, you never know 🙂

Yep, working with the hybrids is probably the best way to delve into the world of Apogee at this point. Existing big models are just not cost-effective to repair and new ones are, of course, just way over the top price-wise. Apogee's in their hey-day represented an excellent value and were positioned so the average guy could afford them......I know, I was one of them. 🙂 At this point, I just don't see the brand doing anything but fizzling. Luckily, for guys with deep pockets, there are plenty of good alternatives.

I purchased my Duetta's in 1987 for $2300.00.......IIRC. At that time a good chunk of money....but an amount that I could manage. If a person wants a "new" pair of Duetta's now he better get ready to drop almost ten times that amount.

Obviously I understand everything else is more expensive nowadays as well, but relatively speaking, for the average guy they're fairly un-affordable at this point.

For ref, the UK apogee repairer has a pair of duetta sigs with new graz ribbons and all the tweeks for £5500 and caliper sigs for £3200. So five times what you paid in 87!

If I had the money the calipers would be mine, but I don't. Plus I need a project 🙂

Yep. It all depends upon what you define as "new." (That's why I put it quotes.)
Here's an example of what a "new" pair would cost here in the 'states.

APOGEES FOR SALE - TRUE SOUND WORKS AUDIO, INC.

I thought of selling my Duetta's a few years ago, and offered them to a couple of interested parties. But, they must have thought I was an Apogee neophyte because they attempted to "steal" them from me. I chose not to get rid of them. 🙂

When I got My last pr of Minors about 1year ago....one of the cloth ribbon socks was lose....so i pull the ribbon out.....Now there is only two screws to at the top an two at the bottem................so you would think when put back the ribbon would line up.... in the same spot.....
well the image was off an the sound was diff....what i found was the gap in the front panel on the Minors was biger than my Stages....at lest a 1/6" on each side you see magnets .....this makes BIG diff in sound...So i lossen the Screws an put the ribbon as close as i could to the center....this put the image back an the sound was as before...
I post this just to say if an when anyone makes a new face for the ribbons...i thnk biger gap i front...gives better sound an image....
Whith the Stages faces....looking strat on you cant see any magnets.....you see only ribbon.....I wish i could make the Stages Gap A little biger...but i don't see a way.................all just one mans finding
