Anybody know anything about the Adire Audio Extremis?

I also ordered a bunch of Extremis..es Extremii? whatever. I will use them with Focal T90s, which are a little more expensive than the Seas (and not a particularly good match, really), but I will also use the Seas 27TDFC, too. I think the Seas should be quite good. Though now that I think about it, the Hiquphon is probably an excellent match, given how far the FR of Extremis extends.

Dan from Adire said on the diyforum mail list that Adire has a lot of products coming soon, so that is good - I'd like to see a 5" version, and maybe a 10", too.

It would be nice to see some designs show up on this thread, too. I am really looking forward to these speakers.

I notices the Extermis a few weeks ago on the Adire website, and was amazed to see those specs! But one thing I'm wondering about: Is the off axis response any good?

Not that I would need good off axis response... I'm looking for a nice woofer (or rather two), to make my new active front speakers next year. They will be three way with an MTM unit consisting of Monacor 13 cm (5") kevlar woofers with phase plug and a Aurum Cantus G2si (I use the units in my center right now). Beneath that, I want to use one or two woofers in a small sealed box, about 35 Liters (or maybee TL), and use a Linkwitz Transform te extend the bass response a bit. So I'm looking for some nice woofers that will let me do this, without having to sacrifice a lot of SPL @ low frequencies, and without a lot of space (it should be a small, compact moster :hot: ). The Extermis would be great for this, up until now, I could only find one alternative in the same pricerange that could copete: look at the Visaton TIW200XS (a little bigger, not usable as a mid unit, but it is great for bass). It will deliver about 2 dB more maximum SPL than the Extremis (and it also looks great ;) ).

So, I would like to ask if there are any other alternatives for the Extermis as a bass driver? Alternatives I have seen don't reach the same SPL levels at low frequencies. And I need a lot of excursion for my Linkwits Transform. So if you know any 6" or 8" alternatives in the same price range, that will do nice in a small sealed box, let me now. In the mean time, I will try to make a choice between Extermis and TIW200XS ;)

4real,

Think Koda 8" ... same excursion and XBL2 motor but with a larger SD
How high do you want to use it?

Ow yes, I forgot about the Koda (how could I). I want to use it upto 150~300 Hz. That is indeed another goof option! But I remember that there was a reason why I didn't find it as good as the TIW or Extremis. I'll have to check the simulations again... Any other alternatives, not from Adire ;) ?

Shielding could be a hassle with the Koda, depending on how far away it will be. This is where the Extremis is quite impressive. How low do you want to go and are you sure it's worthwhile? I'm not sure it's worthwhile going below 80 Hz and the Extremis can do this very very easily, you would probably not be able to get to xmax unless you have an extremely powerful amp.

Probably you would want to place it close enough to be a problem with shielding and you don't really want to have to add a bucking magnet.

Other alternatives? I think it would be difficult for anything to compete with XBL2 for bass. You get high excursion normally only found in subs but you also get extension higher up.

The Peerless CSX 10" is a nice driver with a low distortion motor but it won't have the same punch.

I realy don't care about shieling. The woofers are to far away for my monitor. I wass planing on going way lower than 80 Hz! Down to about 30~40 Hz (-3 dB) would be nice. Yes, I have a sub (shiva), but for music I like to have as much bass as possible in my fronts as well. If I was going vor 80 hz, excursion would not be such a big problem. A 10" woofer is just to big! Than I'd rather put a shiva on the side of the speaker :) . So I'm still back to my orriginal choice ;)

I will test and post distortion info on the extremis in the next couple of months. I will try to do some IM tests to highlight IM distortion issues.

I'm hopeful these will be nice. However, going to 3, 4, 5k may be pushing it...

Thanks for the heads up Mark, looking forward to the results. Always appreciate your tests. Will this be part of a bigger test of other 6 1/2 - 7" mid-woofers? I would love to see the Seas L18.

Black, thanks for the link. I can't get the image link to work. Has anyone else had this problem? I have tried it with both IE and Mozilla browsers. Everything just freezes. Has anyone downloaded successfully who would be willing to email it?

cheers,

Paul

You need to have quicktime installed. It doesn't seem to work on every computer :(

For those interested in viewing the patent images who use Mozilla/Firefox, or may be having difficulties with Quicktime or other .tiff image plugins, I took the liberty of converting them to the more universally-usable .gif format and hosting them as a matter of convenience.

The file sizes are still reasonably small (ranging from 40 - 150 kB) and I scaled them down a bit so they should be viewable on most systems with a minimum of scrolling and such. They won't print out at a useful size without some fuss though.

And here are the original tiffs, which are not as convenient to view on all systems, but are scaled appropriately for printing out if you have a graphics program that reads them. Much better if you want to download them, print them out and read them later.

Sorry I didn't read this thread before you had to go mucking about with Quicktime and IE yourself, I hate trying to get browsers and multimedia plugins and such to play nice together. :( Sounds like all is well though.

It makes it easier for others, however. I had to download a 20M file to get it working, which is fine for me on cable but for others in dialup, your links will be very helpful.
