Great site! Take a look at mine at:-
http://www.geocities.com/ec1288/
It featues diy audiophile projects include Genesis ribbon and NHT 1259 speaker, Audio Note Ongaku amp, Pass Labs Aleph 5 amp and Altec Lansing A5 VOTT speaker. Lots of free schematic diagrams, books and CD review.
I like your site a lot too. It's quite a coincidence, but I ran across you site earlier today, before you posted the link here - it was linked from a forum post I was reading.

Denis

Sorry it is in danish, but it show my diy ribbon.

It looks very interesting. How about a synopsis in english? From the pictures it looks like a planar magnetic with three conductors about a foot l(300cm)ong. It also looks like you built a second that is about 4.5 ft (1500cm). How close did I come?

dhenryp,
Your site is very informative. I was glad to see all the detail shots of the fiberglass clamp/interface. Very nice work!

Thanks Tiroth and ABJenson.
I'm ready to declare that my site is "done", at least as far as the Ribbon Project is concerned. I've got several unrelated projects that only have placeholders, but I'll gradually fill them in.

Hi, I'm curious if anyone has tried making elements out of something other than aluminum foil? For example, McMaster Carr sells copper, brass, nickel and stainless steel foil. All are available in suitable thickness. TIA, mac.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
The only material other than aluminium, that can be used is berrulium. The other you mentioned are to heavy.

Andre' is right but beryllium can be a hazardous substance and is probably not a good thing with which to be experimenting.
dhenryp,
I've been following your progress with your DIY ribbons and must say thanks to you, for taking the time to share your experiences.
I am a fellow DIY'er and have built the Audax Home Theater signature series speakers and a 260L Adire Tempest sonosub for my home theater.
The sound in my theater today is probably better than many, but, looking for even better performance, I would love to try a set of ribbon tweeters. Your project pages might just make that possible.
I do have a few questions related to your eventual use of the ribbons in your home theater. I hope you can fill in some details indirectly related to your DIY project.
1. I think I read that your ribbon tweeters are destined for your Left/Right channels in your home theater. What are your plans for your center channel? Do you think a horizontal ribbon would work? Could it be the same size? Do you think a shorter version could keep up with the SPL?
2. I suspect you will partner your tweeters with conventional cone midrange drivers for < 1500Hz. Are you planning a single driver per side, or multiple?
Thanks again.
Joe L.

Hi Joe,
My ribbons are going into line arrays. They will be teamed with a line of 14, 4.5" Vifa Buyouts (490-432) from PE.
I have read from folks on this forum and others that the center channel is not that important so long as you don't sit far off center, especially with Line Arrays. My speakers will be flanking a 102" front projector screen and the all the seating is between the speakers. I'm going to try it with two speakers. If I'm not satisfied I'll build a short center array (~30"), which is another set of compromises. I've bought enough of the Vifas to build either a center array or four surround speakers.
Regards,
Denis

Mac ... Orions and your current setup?!
Dear Mac,
I have been poking around the diyaudio site for the best part of a year now, and had nearly decided on building a set of Orions, until I heard some old Carver speakers with 4 foot long magnetic planar "ribbons" and fell in love with the clarity of sound. Others around have also said that ribbons also run rings around even the SEAS Millennium tweeter which features in the Orion.
Did you ever have a pair of Orions (as in your Avatar)? What did you think? Are the speakers you illustrated just above better than the Orions?
I like the look of the ribbon, the open baffle midranges and the dipole woofers.
Was it your design? What tweeter and mid-range dirvers did you choose? Is the crossover analogue or digital?
I might start with something like your setup, and if I need more dispersion in the treble, then perhaps make the 4 foot version of DHenryP's tweeter.
Regards,
George.

Denis,
Thanks for taking the time to respond to my questions.
I was thinking about trying a shorter horizontal ribbon tweeter driver together with two midbass cone drivers for a center channel. If I keep the crossover high enough, I think the ribbon will be able to produce enough SPL to keep up.
I'm looking for 105db levels or thereabouts on peaks. I was thinking of two or three segments of DIY ribbon like yours. I know you said the performance of your first test segment was pretty decent and it was quite loud. I was hoping you might have some ideas.
I too have a front projection theater, but unlike you, I have a wider seating area than my 110 inch screen. Because of this, off axis performance is something I care about.
My theater, DIY Audax HT speakers, DIY Adire Tempest sub
I've since mounted my center channel above my screen on a shelf that angles it downward towards the front row of seats.
I guess I'll have to order a few magnets and round up a bit of metal to find out if a DIY ribbon would work for me.
Thanks,
Joe L.
Hi Joe,
I think you should be able to hit the 105db reference level you are looking for with 2 or 3 segements. I know with my big ribbons I can easily hit 105db with continuous tones without melting the ribbons.
BTW: Very nice HT setup. What projector do you have?
Reagrds,
Denis

JL, horizontal ribbon is the opposite of what you want for good off-axis performance. It looks like you can handle vertical directivity but require broad horizontal dispersion: perfect for a vertical ribbon. That would probably even help with early reflections from the ceiling.
I think dhenryp's shorter design would be fine, you just wouldn't be able to run it as low. For instance, my 3" ribbons hit 105dB at 4W, but I cross at 4kHz. With a 6-7" ribbon, your search with a mid would probably be a cakewalk. Also might solve some lobing issues with the lower xover point.
