FINALLY... I'm getting to work on my 'parts bin' Osprey-BR. I installed the CDs in the woofers and mounted them in cabinets from a pair of Klipsch KG52, which are about 2 cubic feet (56 liters) in volume, one foot (30cm) wide baffle, 12.5 inches (32cm) deep, 37.5 inches (95cm) height.

For now, I'm going to mount the crossover parts externally, on a board, so I can modify parts as needed before finalizing.

I'm a little worried about baffle step effects from the skinny baffle causing a mid-boost. An app called "The Edge" calculates I'll get a boost around 550Hz. We shall see...

The crossover boards are UGLY, because I had to parallel smaller value capacitors to build up the needed crossover values. But I now have both speakers playing. I've only listened to the speakers driven by my old Panasonic AVR, but I know that sounds acceptably good, so I believe it's a fair test.

First impressions are:

  • Very sensitive/efficient. It takes very little power to get LOUD.
  • Detailed. Lots of clarity. I like that.
  • Voices on TV sound very 'live' and present, without a metallic 'sheen'. That's tough to do, because TV sound mixes are usually really hyped up for vocal punchiness and dialog clarity.
  • Percussion and drums sound amazing. 'Fast', punchy, dynamic -- yet delicate when called for (triangles, cymbals).
  • Light in the bass, but there is bass there. It is a 'lean' balance right now. I will need to work on the cabinet tuning some more.
  • DYNAMICS! When something is punched up loud in the mix, YOU KNOW ALL ABOUT IT.
  • Imaging is getting more stable the more I play them. I think they're actually breaking in.
I do believe this is a very good sounding design. I have to fix my PP 2A3 amp so I can hear these speakers with it.

Thanks for the great design, Michael!

I'm not sure if I did this right but here is what I get with REW with the mike right even with the edge of the speaker.

any idea why there is the drop at about 600? Is it normal or did I just do the measurement wrong?

The 'official' one doesn't show a dip there and mine also tilts up more above 10K.
