Amplifier using MJL21193/94

Where did you get them from?
Traditionally( & still) most Indians buys electronic components from local distributors(you may not believe me but price is usually very attractive!). Online options are very limited here. On the other hand KEC semiconductors are readily available in indian market & in my experience performance is also very good.
Ignore the first half of that…. It was supposed to go to another thread and apparently the new software has a few glitches….
That's why i was having difficulties understanding the first half of your comment. Btw are you still dreaming about long obsolete famous HITACHI & TOSHIBA outputs? :wave2: How good were they? 🙂

Still dreaming but largely given up. It would be nice to have real 20 MHz TO-3’s for the case when a CUSTOMER amp that requires them needs repair. At this point it’s “eff it, I’m not touching it”, unless they agree that I can stick in 2119x’s and live with the result or kluge in TO-3P’s. Modern TO-3Ps are just as good - FOR NEW DESIGN. When you can’t get drivers anymore we’ll all be in trouble - if it can’t take the MJE1503x (or if that’s otherwise unacceptable) you’ll just be stuck with nothing you can do with it.

Hi, my aim is to make an amplifier for medium power output, i mean 100watt into 8ohm & 150w into 4ohm.
Mr, nirupambhowmick

Besides considering other options my advice to you is to have look at Mr Elvee's designed "Circlophone". This is an excellent amplifier with very low THD and extremely good sonic quality. It's sound can be compared to that of vaccum tube flavour with exceptional Bass and Treble with out the need of any preamplifier for correction. It's class of operation is warm AB with approximately 150-200ma quiesent current.

It comes in two flovours with BJT and HEXFET versions. I have tested both versions and a stereo HEXFET version is in my continuous use. It uses commonly available components and never need any adjustments after assembly. After building Circlophone, I have dumped other future amplifier projects.

The best part is that Mr Elvee (the designer) is a wonderful person and is all the time available to reply to any querry related to the build without any hesitation.

Thanks

Yeah. It is a real nightmare. We still have nice output devices (Sanken, Onsemi, Toshiba), but the high quality TO-220 drivers (2SC4893/2SA1837, 2SC5171/2SA1930, 2SC4833/2SA1859) are dead....

Totally agree, and what's worse is there doesn't seem to be equivalent surface mount options available even if one resorts to paralleling SM devices to get the required SOA capabilities. You tend to have much higher Cob in such situations. The same will happen with output BJTs I guess, and we will be left with vertical MOSFETs and class D outputs as our options 🙄.

Cheers

You could get many of them by scrapping some "broken by design" multichannel receivers with broken HDMI-/Digitalboards. They are mostly full of them. Sometimes they are using C3423/A1360 and/or C2705/A1145 in the VAS, too (Onkyo especially). With open eyes in the electronic bay you could get them for under €20 and some other components (transformer, caps) are "bonus" for re-using.

Most HT receivers are broken by design. Good source of transistors for now, but they will eventually all be gone. Does anyone remember 20 years ago when you could get all the transformers, heat sinks (LARGE ones), and soup can caps you ever wanted surplus at 5 cents on the dollar? Where has it all gone? We’ve used it all an nothing has come in to replace it.

I have most components for circlophone except some diodes, pcb is also available at diyaudiocart. I heard a lot about this amp, thnks for sharing your experience 🙂
