Altec Lansing

I have a 3-way Altec VOT with active sub - Altec 288-8G for the 1505, GPA 515-8G woofers/828 cabinets, Rythmik 15HP subs and JBL 2404H horn tweeters.

I use an active crossover at 50Hz, 500Hz, and passive 1st order at 15KHz for the horn tweeters; biamped using We 91a 300b monoblocks, 26 tube preamp, Tetra Sans Phono Preamp, Gyro SE TT and Marantz SA-KI Pearl CD for source.

Very happy with the sound produced.

Hello DIYers
I am considering reconing a pair of 515s with 8ohm cone kits from GPA (~USD80 + freight) . However, their preferred adhesives cannot be air-freighted to AUS. Please offer suggestions for locally available adhesives for spider and surround and the non-drying compound that is applied to the surround as a damping device.

The 515s were re-coned in the the 1970s with 15ohm kits from the then agent for Altec in AUS but have been idle for most of the ensuing period.

Also, any observations on re-coning in general and the advisability of recharging the magnets during the exercise will be welcomed. Who in AUS offers magnet recharging? (Etone in Melbourne have offered to re-charge the magnets for ~AUD$70 per magnet but don't offer before and after field strength measurements)

What is your reason for the recone? Problems with the cones, spiders, coils? Or do you just want to go to 8 ohm?

I've had 416s recone done at GPA and they are nice enough, but the cones are heavier than the originals. I have another pair of 70s vintage 416s that need no recone at all. Remag, maybe.
