The big Onken is a great choice. My 416s are in an Altec 828 cabinet which I slightly prefer. Since I have 2 pairs, maybe I should build an Onken W.
I'm running big Onkens with Iconic 165-8G which is basically equivalent to the Altec or GPA 515-8G.. Very happy with them over nearly seven years - probably something of a record for me.
look at this:

it's a japanese VOTT scaled down for a 12" driver....
any ideas how would this sound?
especially compared to mini onken..

"Boorrring!" ...
Cal,
How'sa bout putting your 416C drivers in Onken cabinets along with a pair of 18 inch SEOS waveguides?
And then add a pair of Altec/GPA CDs to get your juices flowing??
Geez I might build this one myself ...

Not as good as you might think. Years ago I had a pair like this made by University Sound. OK, but not great. I gave them away.it's a japanese VOTT scaled down for a 12" driver....

What's your goal, Cal? Fun, or serious audiophile stuff?
Always serious, always fun, you know me.
Michael if you prefer the A7 type cabinet then I will consider that. I won't use my existing ones, I'll go looking for some others. They can be had for a good price these days.
But Cal, you have those already. Why not try something different? If you are in a building mood, try the big Onken.
The Onken is quite different than the A7, and does bass very well IMLE.. I agree with Pano, you ought to give it a shot.. 😀
I don't think you and I talked Onken before. OK, maybe I'll chew on this. I looked around but can't easily see the plans, does someone have them handy?
I'll send them to you this evening, if you don't find them before that.
I meant Kevin, about talked into the Onken, sorry.

Actually you provided a lot of encouragement and support, but I had already more or less made up my mind when I posted about the project here. You provided the moral support. I'd been thinking about building a pair since about 2001 when I still lived up in Newburyport.
@ Cal:
The Onken is based on the old Jensen Ultraflex design and there should be web literature readily available online for that.
There is also a spreadsheet for calculating key dimensions and determining the suitability of a given driver for the Onken design based on ts params.

I too beg to differ. There's just something magic about that cabinet. They don't measure well but they have something you don't hear in other cabinets. Not sure what it is, but there must be a reason it is still so popular and good for so many different woofers. For indoor use I found that I had to reduce the port in mine to about 75 in^2 🙂
A number of years ago - won't go into how many - I and two other guys lived in a fairly large house. One of the guys had a pair of A7s with the 500 hz horns & xovers, I had a pair of Tannoy 12" Golds in a pair of homemade BR cabinets. Hard to believe but both pair were set up in the living room and hooked up to a Sony integrated amp. With their efficiency, for a lot of music, all you heard was the A7s but (big but) when there was low, or high, content you heard the Tannoys.
No question that if you want to hear a recording with nasty guitar, at realistic levels, the A7s will sound great ... for a while. For all other content, sorry, I'll go elsewhere.
Just my opinion ...
Interesting, but the amp only sees one load. It's hard to imagine putting two dissimilar systems together like this and getting anything good. A bit like blending all the colors together and getting brown?
Thank you Greg. Yoo da man! [as always]
So that is a suitable cabinet for the 416C? I seem to remember a 45º bevel at the ports but I don't see it in those photos. Is the bevel an improvement, not necessary, or something I shouldn't do? It does have a visual appeal.
Just my opinion ...
No argument from me pb. I know what they can and can't do. 🙂
BTW, my babies are back from the hospital today. Sorry, wife's camera, hard to see how beautiful they are.

The stock A7 is pretty dreadful, IMO. Maybe good for punching thru vocals, but that's about it. Here one set up properly, or better yet an A5, and you never go elsewhere. Hard to believe, but true.No question that if you want to hear a recording with nasty guitar, at realistic levels, the A7s will sound great ... for a while. Cal, I can send you the entire article (in French, bien sur) if you like. You now have the basics.
