FWIW -depends on the box. The drivers have slightly different volume & tuning requirements, assuming you're tracking the same alignment, although in practice the effects may well get swamped out by room acoustics &c.
Okay fair enough. Yes the MAOP 10.2 really digs out deep bass but it has less details in the treble region (possibly due to the MAOP).Compared to the CHP-90, the 10.2 Maop has more weight in the base region.
CHP-90 has more details to make the cone lighter. 10.2 Maop goes deeper in the base than CHP-90. The paper cone is better at bringing out details. The magnesium cone is more homogeneous and heavier.
The CHP-90 is a fantastic driver. I like it very much.
Considering the price, the CHP-90 wins.
It is the smallest driver I have listened to from Alpair. If you like more weight and deeper bass then the 10.2Maop is the winner.
Both of these drivers have nothing that stands out.
You can listen for several hours straight.
For a more fair (size) comparison, how about CHP-90 compared to Alpair 7.3 (or the modern version which is Pluvia 7HD)?
CHP-90 has an Sd of 85cm^2 relative to the Alpair 10 / MAOP 10 range which is 88.25cm^2 - 90cm^2 (depending on where you take your measurement on the surround). Assuming the former, then it's 96.32% rated Sd of the Alpair 10 series, and 170% of the 7.3 or P7HD, where rated Sd is 50cm^2.
Apologies for the confusion. I sometimes still get confused with the marketed diameter measurements of each Markaudio driver. The cones themselves are usually smaller diameter than what they market it to be (as a whole)
Come again? Sd (total emitting surface area) is always published TTBOMK, and for all companies, that's taken as cone plus a certain amount of the surround diameter. How much varies a little depending on surround design / type & its contribution to the radiating surface, so when in doubt, Sd is our friend. 😉
MA, if memory serves, don't graphically show cone diameter in their driver drawings. Taking the three units mentioned, in size order & quickly explaining the diameters shown:
CHP-90: Total diameter = 151mm. Diameter across circle defined by centre of mounting holes = 139mm. Maximum internal diameter of basket legs = 125.5mm. Magnet diameter 90mm.
P7HD: Total diameter = 122.3mm. Diameter across circle defined by centre of mounting holes = 112mm. Maximum internal diameter of basket legs = 100mm. Magnet diameter = 76mm [nearly]
Alpair 7.3: Total diameter with additional bezel-cover: 135mm. Total diameter without additional bezel-cover: 130mm. Diameter across circle defined by centre of mounting holes = 115mm. Maximum internal diameter of basket legs = 103mm. As I recall the magnet diameter was never listed as there were twin options, plus a cover.

Ignoring manufacturer for a moment & speaking generally, the amount of surround included can vary with compliance, form-factor etc., so as a broad rule, I would suggest sticking with published / rated Sd & where relevant use that as a basis for incorporating into other measures. Same with Mmd; if nothing else, most reputable manufacturers get extremely close on this out of necessity, so it's one of the more reliable / consistent values available.
I assume CHP and CHR are the same: https://frugal-phile.com/boxlib/MA-dim/CHR-90-dimensions.pdf

From outside edge of surround, but subtract dustcap ~ 85.
Using wchang's calculation method, MAOP11 would be 117.14 cm^2.
The published value is 107.5 cm^2.
This is a universal truth in measurement. No one wants to have the same spec as their competitor. Then you have measurements taken in a way that differ from company to company, or at least it feels like it. And it doesn't seem to matter the category. Bicycle seat posts to different caliber ammo that is named the same but, differs from pistol to rifle. Yah, I know, the info is all there, and eventually you will get it, but why comes to as a question again and again. When does a two by four piece of lumber actually become one?
My fondness for the CHP-90 cannot be overlooked.
Have now played quite a lot of music with Bluebuck speakers. I have yet to be disappointed by these. Fast pieces of music as well as calm ones handle these with flying colours. Micro details have been overlooked and this behavior makes you want to listen to all types of music over and over again. All music sounds different, more rewarding.
The CHP-90 has given me a new dimension in music.
More resolution that hasn't existed before. Listening has become more enjoyable.
The bass is fast but does not take over the presentation of the music. It's just there, but it doesn't dominate and doesn't obscure other details.
