Aleph J illustrated build guide

Well, hey there all you almost fearless, and fully god damn fearless soldersmokers. 🙂

(God damnit, the solder from the diy audio store is the -bare none- god damn best solder i haved tried in all my life. And i am a tad over 50.)

Flows like water, sticks like honey, and shines like diamonds!

😁

Thing is: Tomorrow i am gonna finish my second Aleph J. Well finish them PSU fundamentals in both (gonna be parallel mono) amps.

I want to load down and test them PSU:s. Check the ripple. And such.

Well, the question is. How many amps per rail should i aim for?

What would be clearly bad ripple AC voltage with a DMM.

And what would be in the good.

Talking ballparks here. When to cry, and when to smile 😁

I will post pictures from the test
tomorrow 🙂

Twin Aleph J PSU units are completed, tested and ready to soul, rock, funk and blues 🙂

What about snubbers on the rectifiers, Bob Cordell writes about 1 ohm, 1watt carbon film 0,1 uF ceramic capacitor in series across the diodes, on this forum. As a universal solution to tame the ringing. But what about the sonic benefits, is it worth the hassle? What do you think?

Time to drill and tap all 4 heatsinks. And build all 4 audio boards. One almost ready ✋🙂

However: the RC snubbing networks in a Quasimodo optimization, are connected across the secondary, not across the individual diodes.

Since the Quasimodo thread began in 2013, there have been several posts there by members who performed listening tests before, and after, installation of Quasimodo optimized snubbers. About (2/3 rds) of them said the sound got better after installing snubbers, about (1/3 rd) said there was no difference at all, and approximately nobody said the sound got worse after installing snubbers. If I'm remembering correctly, over a very long period of time. Free Gerbers and user manual are attached to QM post #1.

in some special cases, proper (Quasimodo) snubber cells are making difference - highjumping mains xformers before, silent mains xformers after

don't ask how I know - few examples of Pure Kosher made toob preamps ( reputable schmtc origin, all parts by BOM, proper build with high expectations) showing Schizo behavior ......... and polite after snubbing

Really nice work, Jeydee!!

Thanks Mark and Zen, really good information. I am going to dive down in the subject of snubbers when i have got them Aleph J.:s humming along nicely, since it seems to be a pretty complicated subject to optimise snubbers for different applications.

Seems i remembered wrong about Bob Cordells universal snubbers, he talks about snubbers across capacitors not across the diodes as i stated. This is what he really wrote:

"Yes, the snubbers is a good point, and does not have to be expensive. I often use 1 ohm carbon film 1 Watt and a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor in series. There is actually no real ongoing power dissipation in the reistor, and there is an advantage to having the physical size of the total snubber small.

On a positive note, the ESR of a typical aluminum electrolytic also naturally tends to provide some snubbing. So, for example, a 100 uF aluminum electrolytic across a 20,000 uF reservoir capacitor can help (although I would still add a discrete small-value snubber as well).

Bob"

if that’s and audio grade dual 18v secondary 300vA Toroidy
Thanks. Yes it is, well that is simply exellent 🙂
In Sweden there is a proverb that is suitable here, it goes like this:

Det här är som att färdigstekta sparvar flyger rakt in i munnen 🙂

In english:

This is just like having well done pan fried sparrows flying by them selves straight into the mouth 🙂

One channel ready✋🙂
My current plan for the day is to not apply them fine bypass Wima caps, since the original Aleph J did not have them.

But wtf. am i splitting matchsticks with an full size axe and trying to kick in open doors and being stupid?

What would be the actual sonic pros and cons du you think or know?

No relevant sonic cons. Sonic pro nr .1 is reduced risk of oscillation and instability. Papa always sez he doesn’t encounter oscillation. But that’s papa. We are Gremlins.

Though, you could omit now, and install post explosion, as access to the boards will be easier then

Edit: hope I am thinking of the right cap. If not, sorry! 🙂

Andy

Sorry, i should have clearly stated that i was thinking about the bypass caps C7 and C6 as in the picture.

Think I reproved my greenhorn status. Apparently extra resistors protect against oscillation  sorry, really.

risking dodo again, I’ll give it another shot.

I think I would have omitted the bypasses and try without first, and if you are not happy with treble/air, solder them in later. If these are indeed bypasses for caps in the audio path.

Bypasses, if my understanding is correct, can provide an alternate resonant frequency, decreasing DCR on higher freqs, and as such provide more treble/air. I haven’t played much with this myself. However I would think it is a trick that doesn’t like to be overdone. You could check the specs of your caps. If the ESR is low on them even at higher freqs, you prolly don’t need to fret.

Andy

Well, it is an interesting subject. And i suppose it is a matter of taste and preferences.

But i have been on that road of airy, detailed treble and the hunt for a gigantic soundstage. But the problem with a to great focus on details is that it makes the overall natural musicality suffer. One starts to listen to details instead of getting swept away in the music systems overall massive presence and lush musicality.

Foot tapping, very big smiles, and head bobbing deluxe🔥🤗🔥

The Elna Silmic 2 caps that i am using is of what i have read good/exellent for audio.

So thats why i am hesitant to bypassing them, and the possible treble issue you are talking about. Well, maby its best to leave the Wima bypass caps out, and maby later do some A-B -testing…

Well. This amp building thing is truely a interesting and wonderful hobby❄️☃️❄️
