I'll grab one too. Looks like what I was looking for in a stereo dac.

Thanks, getting complicated also plus skipping prototype testing this time 😱 need to cross check and verify - then assembly
Please ignore audiophile legends and faith. I'm a diy builder and i tested 2 (nearly) identical dacs builds, using one a ES9038pro chip and one a AK4493 chip (more or less from the same year). I say nearly because obviously differences in characteristics and output requirements forced me to introduce some minimal differences in implementation (like a 32Khz 1st order LPF at output in ESS case, that is strictly mandatory in any ESS build in my experience - but i implemented it in AKM case to, for equity), but mainly the same: same psu, same-quality parts in circuit, nearly same (equivalent) output stage, same software players, etc... Of course using the same hiend hifi system post-DA conversion (highly revealing). No my faith tells me to avoid ESS and their stuff for a while. Please accept my apologies for intruding.
At the end, the 2 builds were blind-tested by me and some audiophile friends of long experience: no great difference at all in sound, noone could clearly tell the ESS dac from the AKM one. And i was playing through HQPlayer, converting PCM to DSD: yes, ESS don't use something like "DSD direct" technology, but this means absolutely nothing for me as noone can really tell were is the difference IN PRACTICE as noone knows exactly how ESS DSD modulators are designed, they could even practically be impactless in DSD flow conversion, just like AKM DSD direct. And when we had to choose the best sounding dac, the ESS was the winner, by a slight margin. Of course i didn't tell them they were testing an ESS dac, otherwise the result would have been quite different 😅
I built, tested and owned a lot of ESS and AKM dacs until now, and i always preferred the ESS ones: they're simply (slightly) more faithful to the REAL sound, not by accident they are widely used in pro audio gears (multichannel interfaces and DSPs, TV studio equipments, radio equipments, etc...). AKM dacs are offering a "gentled" sound optimized for musicality, but less equal to REAL sound. They sound like music SHOULD sound in our imagination, but not how it sounds for real. That's why they please most "romantic"/"warm liking"/"musicality lovers" (NOT audio lovers)/less audio fidelity lovers audiophiles.
I can't speak for R2R dacs as i never built one, but i rarely liked the ones i listened to, even if each one is sounding in a different way. To my ears, the majority of them have a sound perfect for oldmen listeners of classical/slow jazz music, but bad for other types of listeners...
Software mode only for best flexibility. Control lines from MCU are isolated…
