Laptop LCD
Hi all,
I’m new to this thread and spent over 2 days reading from post 1.
Even went down the side topics and read those through.
I have made a CRT fresnel setup in the past and it worked but only good for cartoons in a dark room. I am ready to start on a LCD projector, trying to keep it simple and LOW cost.
I think every ones projects looks awesome from ace's to T800 but one question I do have.
I have a nice lcd I yanked from a laptop, it goes up to 1280x1024.
It is made my Samsung and I did notice a 10.4T label stamped on the outside of it along the bevel, whatever that means if anything. But how I would I get video into it? It is around 14" diagonal but I think closer to13.7" Or maybe that was 15" at 14.7". I am starting to think it is a lost cause since so much of the processing and video mechanics is done through the laptops main board.
Need to mention again Trev your design looks awesome, just wish I got in and was able to see some of your setup before you had to take the pictures down. I noticed that way back around page 30 and didn't know what was going on till in the 70+ pages when you mentioned the patenting process.
Thanks all for the great reading and motivation the thread inspires,
Jeremy

Greetings
I've been keeping an eye on this thread and forum from time to time and all I have to say is Brilliant guys/gals. I'm more partial to T800's ATX projector since I have an extra one already floating around with a power supply and that solves me having to make a case and it's metal so risk of fire is minimal (in case of overheating). However, Ace's project is very cool. Very cool indeed (and I don't mean temperature wise 😀 ). Right now I'm brushing up on the optics and light theory (focal length and projected image stuff). Yeah, I was one of the suckers who bought into that Fresnel lens gimick with the T.V. also. But it came in handy at that time I only had a 15" crt aperature grill monitor and that 8x10 2x fresnel lens really gave that screen a kick when placed in front and used as a screen magnifier (it was very immersive if I might add). Now I have a 19" G90f viewsonic.
Here's a little background into my projection experience. 8mm. That's right 8mm 😀 EUMIG S926 GL Stereo Sound Recording 8mm Projector. I actually just did a search now and found it on Ebay. I've had it for some time and the projected image is great for an 8mm. The only things I modded on this was the lamp it used and 100w 12v hologen lamp. I gave it a 150w 12v hologen lamp (with additional cooling). I also moded the reel holder to take a 1 hour reel rather than the maximum half hour one. That's about it. If the LCD DYI projector does the same or even better with the projected image I'll be more than happy. I have a Dlite 6' reflective bead which I shall use for the LCD (for now). I know the drawback blacks are gray because of the light reflection is 40% (there's always a hitch isn't there).
Anyway back on topic. I've got the plan in my head but still undecided about a few things:
I will be using the Fujinon copy lens I'm going to order one or two up tomorrow from the surplus shed based on ACE's comment that it's better than a triplet (can't go wrong for $11)
Light source still undecided about that. Still looking in the threads and checking out bulbs.
LCD. The one Ace is using 7" lilliput (yeah they are very nice not just in display quality but input options). There are a few other models Ebay has if I can't get the one mentioned maybe some of you can comment them/it
Lilliput 8" 1024x768. I'm sure 8" would still be within the scale of the lens etc....
Oh yea, if anyone is interested here's a link that explains LCD's with real pics too to better grasp (for newcomers anyway) how they work How LCDs Work. Also check out how projectors work and see some professional light sources. Projecting the Film.
Hope these links are of some help. Again great work guys/gals.

Hey Trev
Hey Trev
First off i would like to say that i LOVE your desine been reading for about 6hrs straight.
As for me im new to fourm and new to all of this...I am however machinest and working on my engineering Deg so i do understand alot of the drawings and such.
I am very intrested in building one of my own (feeling you get when you build something from scrach) a few questions i have is first off do you have blue prints yet? and if so how much are they? And what would you say is the total cost of all the parts used and do you have parts list?
Well hey man i now have this fourm bookmarked and im sure ill talk to you soon

Wow
Well,
... I feel sorry for anyone with a 56k modem at this point.
I have been reading, reading, reading, and reading, and like the previous person who posted, I am blown away. I can't believe it. Its like, amazing, I want to do it, I want to do it now, so, ahhm, nerh, thanks so much for all the information, I never knew such a project was possible, well when I say that I mean, I know anything can be made when you know how, but yeah, who'd want to go pull apart a four thousand dollar Panasonic AE700 to find out how it works, when you can just read this thread.
Damn I am so impressed.
Trev, keep up the good work, and all the other projector buffs on here, thanks you so much for all your dedication and knowledge that you so willingly pass on to n00bies like me.
P.S. Oh My God I don't think i've ever seen a 91 page thread in my life.

some questions
Greatings, I had been looking your LCD projector and it is awesome, actually, I had the same idea 6 months ago and I made my own using a small lilliput 1.8" lcd and a Projector lens, I havent test the projector with a strong light source, and only made tests with the original light source, of course just to see if it works, i have a few questions about some components you are using, 1. I cant make that any strong source light works with the lcd, it is because I dont have the Condenser lens?? what is its function...
2. What is the use of fresnel lens in this projector, I tested lot of times with 100" tv, but I dont find any use in the LCD projector, could you explain me?. do I need 2 types of fresnel, one in front and the other in the back of LCD???
3. What is the FS Mirror, any mirror works? what happens if I dont use the mirror, its any problem at all, or its just to solve an space problem....
4. how could I apply the UV and IR filters?? I checked and only found a UV filter sheets, I just have to add it to a tempered glass?? How? where??
5. how do you focus the projector??
6. as you said, retail projectors come with 1.3" LCD screen, so why its better a 7" LCD?? if I use my 1.8" what will happen?? its only because 7" has better image quality and features? or any other reason??
7. heat inside projector its a big problem, its necessary to protect LCD and other items? how??
I know.... too many questions, sorry, im new in this. Thanks for your help. 😀

i really would like to make one but dont know where to start so i will keep reading for now 😀

hey ACE!
in the 6th post you mentioned getting an lcd from an infocus lp220. i know it was quite some time ago, but are these still available, and where can they be found? i'm building my pj around a playstation lcd, which will be ok for now, but i'm looking for a better replacement in the process.
thankz!

Where is the new thread?
Hi all,
First post here. I noticed in a post in mid September that Ace was going to move to a new forum/thread. Anyone know the id? I haven't found anything searching for posts by Ace in the last month that seems likely.
Read this thread from the beginning in the last week and now i'm missing the last chapter. 🙂
thanks,

Re: Where is the new thread?
Heya buddy, and the rest, sorry for the late reply here (183106 veiws later lol). Ive been very busy in the last 12months running up manny tests and made manny clones of others designs in a test bed using their exact same parts. This being for testing purposes, for the acuracy of camera shots versus reality, and for discovering the best system for us diyers, along with eficientcy, heat concerns, projector life longetivity (both bulb and lcd, along with psu ect), image acuracy and saftey.
Im upto my last tests and system design latter this week, and ill have answers shortly (though i do have now ill post em up later).
Right now (well in a couple of days) ill be testing out the good old ellipsidal reflector, we will see how it goes. Being the best reflector (as in eficientcy) made and with my experience, i expect decent results. This will be run only on a 150w MH bulb and it should surpass the output of a 250w MH bulb in a standard spherical configeration by far, (very acheivable and ive done this already in a spherical configeration though not standard).
The reason my testing stops here is because, well, there is nothing else to test lol. Ive done spherical in all ways possible (5 types), parabolic (6 types), tested over 120 different condensers (in singles and pairs with various coatings), 6 frensel sets (in 36 diff configs), 5 different grades of FS mirror, 8 types of cold mirrors, 5 types of IR filter glass and a total of 4 different projection lenses all on the same lcd in uncountable different configerations. Thats just in 12months, and imo thats not bad. Its also cost me an arm and a leg along with countless hrs (both designing and testing), and im glad its nearly over lol.
After i test the ellipsidal reflector i will make a decision on what system to go for, and finnish the building of the one i started over a year ago. Im fairly 100% sure ill be going with the ellipsidal at this stage due to the eficientcy (both in heat and light), and the cost of the darn thing (around $100).
Atm i dont have a website up. I did have a small forum happening a while back though my server went down and all was lost. I may start another in the future if i have the time and if there is the call, though imo this one is fine 🙂
Stay tuned and see you soon with more.
Trev🙂
P.S Thanks for the nice words guys, keep up the good work!!!

hi guys love the work you people have done.
im starting a project myself and need a bit of help. im going for the cheap route but dont mind putting in alot of work. im going for a screen size of 50" - 55" but dont mind a bit smaller if the quality will be better. do i need a frensel if the lens covers the whole lcd, or is it best to still use one.
has anyone got a basic diagram of the setup for a 2.5" lcd projector.
would it be possible to use this light as a light source. and a fresnel lens witha 300mm focal length to drict the light into my lcd or is that not nessercary.
Tungsten Halogen Flood 150 watt
http://shopping.lycos.co.uk/c5717p1...ight_bulbs.html
and a screen like this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....ssPageName=WDVW
the pic is wat i want the basic layout to be will that work or is it possible or out of the question.
also what sort of lens would i need for this.
thanks

Hi Ace,
and thanks for a grate project you are working on 🙂
All i wanted to ask is your spec´s i mean what LCD are you using (or recommending) and Fl ect.

hey ace how do you get that bulb in a ellipsical reflector???
Through a 22mm hole buddy, you just poke it through.
You cant do this on the larger bulbs. I have taken a shot of my new light unit against the exact 175w mh bulb you have.
That 175w light is brand new btw, if anyone wants it let me know by email. Its been sitting here for over a year doing nothing, never fired up and comes with ballast socket, ignightor and cap, all brand new.

The reflector is held in by a spring i made out of piano wire as you can see in the next 2 shots.
The unit isnt finnished as there are 2 panels that go on the top and bottom that mount flush to the lip on the sides. Overal this thing in real life looks very pro, but on the cam nothing like it. Ill finnish the other 2 panels off asoon as ive finnished the design for this in the projector, so i can sort out the cooling.
Before any of you guys chuck a fit and say the lamp isnt central lol it is, its just from the veiw from the cam from which i took the shot.

And here is a side shot showing the side of the spring.
Mind the odd bolt on the lamp being too long as stated the unit is not done.
The performance of this new elipsidal isnt bad, its the same brightness (if not brighter) as a 250w HQI-TSD with the arc being condensed, so that means its going to be alot brighter then a standard 250w setup.
For those of you who have played with a parabolic reflector and thought the Parabolics wer touchy, these reflectors are 10x worse. Everything has to be spot on or it wont work right.
Ill be back with more updates at a later date.

Heya buddy read back abit in the thread 🙂, all of the answers are there. Im using the lilliput 7inch which has a native of 800x480 and compresses upto xga. if you want to know what a good focal is on the rear frensel, go 210 -230mm and for a top either go 210mm and up to 320mm and you wont have a problem.
Trev🙂
Indeed it is looking good .. very "Trevlike" indeed mate hehe...but its really what we have come to expect from you Trev, your work has that pro finish no doubt. Don't know about others on the forum but I for one attempt to replicate the finish you achieve ... all to easily it seems 😛 I guess you have been doing it for years though and it certainly shows with the research, finished product and the overall results you achieve. Your both knowledgeable and gifted with your hands Trev and certainly an asset to the forum mate...keep up the good work Trev, shall be watching with a keen eye and a fingers poised over the ctrl+c keys hehe...
p.s we can all be thankful that the reflector only reflects light well and not Trevs image ...hahaha soz mate couldn't resist that jibe 😛
