all of the thoughts you guys (?) have mentioned have been bouncing around in my head but i'm looking at ebay and the ones on there going for $30 - $50......

that's in my start out price range......

i know the image will be mediocre at best, but that's honestly all i'm looking for right now......

if everything works decent and i can get a clear pic with the cheap screen i'll save for the lilli......

if i had the $180+- for it now i would get it and then probably be too scared to mess with it for my first project.......

if i kill a $30 screen from ebay i won't be too upset......

and who knows....maybe i'll be the first to get xga type graphics from one..........highly doubtful, but one never knows

I just bought a portable dvd-player with a 7" widescreen tft monitor, the unit has video-input connection. I´m not planning to use this with diy-projectors but I just want to show the picture quality and how a low-resolution monitor handle video. I think the resolution is 480*234, but I´m not sure. The moore pattern you can see is not there in the reality.

if i can get results near that good i'll be more than happy.....

i realize that things are not going to be perfectly crisp and clear...perhaps a little blocky or some blurred images during movies but if it's even half decent it'll do for now.....

and perhaps with a good bit of tuning and work i'll get an image good enough for everything i want to do.......who knows

i guess we'll find out

psx projector success

I watched the pacers beat Dallas, and the Lakers beat Sacramento tonight on the projector I built for about $100. Will post more thorough details and links to a website with more pics, but here's the summary:

psx with broken backlight off ebay $21 shipped
3m 9200 ohp off ebay $41 shipped, then stripped
2 page magnifiers from staples $16
1 computer case fan $11
various plumbing and heating fixtures $25

screen is an old map of Africa turned around - Free
VCR for rf modulation is a mitsubishi circa 1985 - Free

Yes, there is pixelation, and screendoor, but I built a fine focus adjustment into it, and can blur the image just enough if I choose to. The colors aren't exactly right, but it totally does the trick for me in my grungy basement bar.

To each his own, but I'm very satisfied with the results for the investment, and its been fun to learn.

link to finished projector and screenshots

Here's a link to some pics I took while building my projector out of a ps1 screen

http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/djohnson1@snet.net/album?.dir=/b96e

They are in the middle of the album. The first shots are of my sharp qa 1500/dukane 4003 set-up, and the ones at the end were of my $10 ebay fresnal scammer two years ago.

The ps1 projector has a fine focus mechanism, and a keystone correction mechanism built in. Last nite, I had it running during a rotisserie baseball league draft I hosted in my basement. Seven other sports nuts were watching the NCAA CT/Vanderbilt game on it while we did our draft, with every light on. They were all impressed that I built this little thing for about $100, and it provides a totally watchable picture even with lots of ambient light.

overall, I would say its 20x better than the tv/fresnal, and about 2/3 as good as the qa1500/dukane4003

As my first little starter project i was hoping to work along the same lines as lowjacker. I have no experience with optics and the like, so dont want to spend a fortune on parts if the end product will be shoddy. Instead, i'd rather use cheap parts to get a real hands on feel of how things work before going out and buying expensive parts for a 'proper' project.

I think the simplest way to go about building my first projector would be to place an lcd on an ohp, as the optics etc are already aligned, and ther's less chance of me messing up.

Would anyone be able to tell me if using a small lcd on an ohp would result in a small image with lots of black bordering (from the cover used to hide excess light)?

I have the following options within my reach atm:

1) 4" 3rd party playstation lcd ~£30
2) 5" official sony lcd ~£50
3) 7" lilliput widescreen lcd ~£75

What would you guys reccomend for an initial prototype style projector? I will only have about 8 feet between the ohp and the screen, so do you know how big the resulting image would be? If its smallish would a small cheap lcd suffice?

Also, is there any major reason you can think of that i shouldnt use an ohp, and make the extra step of building my own enclosure? If i build my prototype using an ohp, and then decide to build my own enclosure, could i strip down the ohp and use its lenses etc, or would there be problems? (eg fresnal too large?)

I look forward to your replies 🙂

MrDT

//ps: posablejesus, do you have any more photos of your setup by any chance? (other than those on your website)

THat's pretty cool Doc.

I was thinking of maybe doing a "shotgun" style design on mine as well. Probably pvc though

MrDT- I have pretty much abandoned that setup already. I have a sharp qa-1500 on my overhead that I have been playing with.

The psone screen has been set aside to be used in an enclosed setup.

I have more pictures from my test run. Is there something specifically you need to see that you can't already from mine or Docs pictures?

Thanks for the replies doc and posable 🙂

I think i'm going to opt for the lilliput to be honest, and go halfway to building my own enclosure along the lines of what i found here (french site but useful pics 😉)

Thanks for the offer of more pics, but after a little more research i think i'll manage without them 🙂

Now all i need to do is find a way of hacking vga functionality from one of the cheaper lilli's...
