I was always aware that airplanes can fly with only one working engine, but I really would not have liked to be a passenger on this flight. It's terrifying.

They are designed to fly perfectly well on one engine. Books and books full of certification rules and regulations are there so what occurred yesterday is exactly what happens - the aircraft returns safely at an airport and there are no injuries.
It was good to hear the relaxed "mayday" from the pilot. Re-assuring!

I am glad my house is no longer under the normal takeoff pattern for DIA. I am a little far out but still could get free aircraft parts.

My question is about why the engine fails and catches fire like that. I can understand that a pipe is blocked and fuel does not flow, but in that case it would stop working.
Passengers say they heard an explosion.
Lack of maintenance ?
I did not see photos of the parts of the engine detached and fallen to the ground, any link?

I know I cannot touch the aircraft parts.
I think would periodically check my roof for fragments if I lived closer to the airport or in the flight path. One fragment causing a small leak will eventually do real damage.

I suppose it should be a fragment of solid material, I think that the birds absorbed by the turbines have not caused damage of this type ..... or have they ? 😕

The broken fan blade in the first photo is likely the culprit. That would have caused the vibration that shook the engine to the point that the cowling broke apart and separated from the aircraft.
The fire in the video that has been all over the news is probably just engine oil, it's much to quiet to be fuel, and anyway fuel would have been shutoff to the engine shortly after the failure, and hydraulic fluid, so the only thing left to burn is engine oil.
Everything contained to the engine itself and not up the pylon, the system worked as designed to contain the malfunction, there was no loss of life nor even any injury.
