true. The reason I dared to ask for a definitive answer is because cf has a ‘reputation’ so if I were weak of mind, I might build the cc version to be assured of hearing what the designer intended, what is expected to be so pleasing, even though no gain is needed.
I wud have thought this thread would have died an unnatural death by now.😀
I hope not - I just found this thread and I am putting together a parts list to build one of these.

to me, the 6BC4 line stage in keeping with the tenor of this thread is the best line stage for me...a bit more gain, but hey what is the volume control for?

Well, it takes me a long time to decide what to build, I’m just now thinking about a 6V6 linestage buffer 😀
just wondering about the merits of volume pot before or after the cf, that may take a few months to decide if I’m not careful...

I could say that about some other recent threads, but certainly not this one.

What are you guys looking at for a power transformer? Any recommendations? I read through all the links but not all 360 pages...
Thank you.

Thank you.

Just a quick question on the 6V6 since you guys know it well. I was wondering about using trioded 6V6 in PSE (a pair in parallel) for an output stage. How would something like 385v at 35mA be? I have some 3.5K OPTS at 70mA. I have a friend who uses 6P6s in his guitar amp at 415v a-k with apparently no ill effects.
They are fine, but I'd use more like 250V unless you go AB1 PP...
Datasheet lists 315V as max plate voltage in triode mode, too...

Thanks for that - so 315v is a safe limit. At 35mA that's 11W dissipation. I believe they can dissipate 14W.
6V6 with SSHV2
Okay guys, thanks to Salas and Teabag, I've got two SSHV2s burning a hole in my pocket. I think I should build this linestage!
Now, I need to read this thread.......😀

Are we talking about 6V6 or 6P6S?
EDIT: skim read that post...my bad.
From the datasheet of the latter, I interpret that Va max of 350V is datasheet max. About 15W total anode and g2 dissipation.
I suspect I'm running then in the region of 11W to 13W. I'm not so sure I'd run 6V6 quite as hot as that. (13W)
I dont have any 6V6, but I do have 6P1P, another tube Koda knows a bit about.
I'd probably run them at a level you are planning, due to their ever so slightly lower rating

I need gain, but I also need lowish Rout. I know there are many ways to do this, but has anyone used the gain version and then connect that to the CF version? Seems like both versions are low noise enough that this would still sound good.
Thoughts?
Are there any negative side effects that I might not be considering?

If going sand, I would think I would think I wouldn't need a HV mosfet solution, as long as I put the buffer after the DC blocking cap. I could use almost any buffer.
Are your proposing putting this before the cap? Is there an advantage?

Current is decent in gain version. Loading heavy? Go HV mosfet Ale Moglia style.
He usually goes dc I think. Im sure he’ll be happy to answer with his opinions. He has had those things on the bench for long.

WOW. Just finished reading entire post!! I’m really excited about building this pre. You folks on the other side are sure character’s. I love it. Thanks!
Off course it is possible, but did anyone try it?
Same construction with a 12 A6?
Because I have a few and they cost nothing.
A 5 to 8 kOhm load should do, i think, as triode.
