Perhaps it's only ironic to me that the "amazing musicians that have been reorded(sic?)"
( like Victor Wooten ) also go to the extra effort ( beyond practice ) to express their musical vision.
They rarely play stock generic musical instruments. They invest a lot of time and money to improve that sound. Refinement is often matter of minute changes.
A few percent closer to perfection ( even if it is ultimately illusive and unobtainable )

its amazing to me, how so many people can only appreciate something if they are part of a flock.

My first speaker build was back in 1977 to use the speaker outs on my Rad Shack wazoo boom box (4" full-ranges, output meters etc) My father let me use some "old junk" laying around to build my masterpiece. One channel pushed an Altec 12" full range complete with wizzer cone and Alnico magnet...the other speaker was an oval co-axial thing that had a really deep angle to the cone.
The project sounded better than boom box speakers so a big win for a 12 year old. I've recently got back into speaker building, finished all the speakers for the surround sound/sub system so what to do? Go completely nuts and play with vertical line arrays, LEARN Horn Response and build a tapped horn.
Arrays should be done in the next 10 days (120 speakers takes a long time to cut holes, solder in a wiring harness etc) Then the 10" tapped horn project to go with the arrays. Since it is very, very hot out in the garage (95+F or 35C) learning Horn Response in air conditioning sure beats chopping wood in the heat. 😀
What happens with line arrays? What happens if I build a tapped horn out of a Logitech (Tang Band) 10" subwoofer? I figure somebody might find it interesting so I can contribute to DIY Audio--at least let the world know what NOT to do! 🙁

Do you have calculations for that?id run a pipe from the ac in the house to the woodshop 🙂
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Put a speaker in it too.
And while you're listening to Vic, have a listen to this:

Edit: be careful, this is one of those tracks that encourages me to lean the volume knob to almost 12 noon.

Victor Wooten is definitely NOT part of the flock*
( more like part of the Fleck 😉 )
Saw them during the UFO TOFU tour and was close enough to have been the camera man in those vids ( incredible diverse and tight musicians )
Guys like that ( include Carlos Santana ) are part of the "last 6%" group. 😀
* Jerry Goodman was part of "The Flock"
( more like part of the Fleck 😉 )

I've been to see the Flecktones 3 times now, I love em. I've got a shirt here from the "one flew over" days that I had autographed after the show...while I was wearing it, hahaha!
They are great guys and I'm looking forward to seeing them again this year now that Howard is back in the band.
I've got a short list of guys I consider to be in that last 6%, Buckethead, Satriani, Kaki King, Don Ross, and Leo Kottke, just to name a few 🙂
Anyway, I'll stop derailing the thread now, carry on!
Heck it's a merged thread and the OP went there first 🙂Anyway, I'll stop derailing the thread now, carry on!
The list could go on n' on...
( Include the California Guitar Trio, Tony Levin, Joe Bonamasa, Derek Trucks, Warren Hayes, Sonny Landreth, David Lindley, Luther Dickinson )
I think of AC in the garage/wood shop/man cave this way. If it was always comfortable, I'd be bankrupt building speakers all the time. 😱
Summer and winter builds tend to come out the best, the temps force me inside to do more reading and research. When the weather is nice, that is when I enjoy playing music and tweaking the sound. The tapped horn is scheduled for August, so it will take awhile with the weather forcing me to slow down. Horn Response in AC beats the heck out of making errors with wood out in the heat.
Now to get back to cutting wood for the back panels on the arrays, need to run test tones and order X-over parts. They might end up sounding like 😡 but they do look really 😎

Yeah, I know that heat all to well.....
I work in that heat all the time when building stuff. The garage is 100+ if you consider humidity in the summer here in the middle of florida. Nothing like losing 5lbs of water in a day 😉 The only tough part of working in heat is painting, Epoxy cure times are crazy. Heat is easy to handle after 10+ years of living it, its the damn cold that sucks now 😉

Oh, Steve is great too, but I'm not sure I'd put one ahead of the other. They are both great in their own styles.

I lived in Tampa, FL for two years--I'm more a desert rat, not a swamp rat! 🙂 As soon as I finish it, the heat wave will cool down but at least I'll have tunes while having suds in cooler air. 😎 Then the tapped horn project with a single 10"...always something.
a $400 challenge.
you have to build a single passive subwoofer for an outdoor party.
a quality 1500 watt amp is available.
you have $400 for parts/materials (driver/s and plywood) and a workshop with 3 experienced cabinet makers ready to help for free.
what would you build? (what exact driver/box) model numbers and links to web sites would be nice.
no im not trolling (whatever that actually is) im looking for people to give concrete/absolute answers instead of debates around smaller details.

Here's what I would do
I'd buy 2 pcs @ Parts Express #295-130; approx $139 each. Install them in a manifold arrangement reaction cancelling enclosure, tuned with adaquate sized vents. I'm hoping I don't have to go into every little design detail (?)
The enclosure size would be approx 10 cubic foot. I'm estimating materials cost would come in around $100, maybe $125. That plus the cost of the drivers, and you'd be under budget. Buy beer with the left over change and make sure the cabinet makers get plenty. Enjoy the party 🙂
