A well designed tapped horn has directivity -- how much exactly are you looking for? Lilmike has a 25hz TH designed for the 6.5 anarchy driver...

ive never tried a karlson, and after reading this i really want to..... 🙂
Find you the 1955 Radio Electronics "Karlson K15" plan.
Its intended as a full range, but excels at midbass.
Front chamber will throw huge volumes of air.
Reaches down plenty low enough for Rock...
I play bass guitar in Drop D, and this is what I use.
Its also great for drums, and will replicate kickdrum
like no other single cabinet of its size...
Claims wide dispersion, true enough for midrange if that matters.
But midbase kick is a floor hugging vortex thats quite directional.
Aim directly at the audience for optimal loading, this one defies
the usual logic. Does not load better facing into a wall or corner.
Plans here: 1954 Ultra Fidelity plan will do, same thing basically...
Karlson Plans
Its also qualifies as a one sheet wonder (Cut from a single 4x8).
karlsons have a unique sound, easy enough to build, and they are tunable to an extent.
I'd be curious to know what you think about how they sound after the build. i find they work better in smaller spaces (under 5m^2)

mine are going to be my own *special* version.
using (4) 6" cheap subwoofers, and some 'bookshelf' speakers removed from their boxes and installed in the Karlson.
all via 1 of these.
DIAMOND 2 WAY STEREO PASSIVE SUBWOOFER CROSSOVER S @NEW - eBay (item 390285608760 end time Jun-01-11 11:34:52 PDT)
its just a fun project for me,
hopefully ill end up with a single speaker that has a great sound for a particular application,
i have no idea what that application is yet? 🙂 ..........

Yeah, another take on the idea.

Not so good for a small room though...
😀
moving mass is usually light, strong motor - here's a one sheet 32" tall coupler loaded with 103g mms 0.25 qts 18" Eminence woofer - an internal K-tube might be fun for some modern electric bass setups
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I'm looking for some creativity and imagination (for a sub)
i picked up an older powered sub today, its a ported 8" Onkyo, 70 watts, no x-over, just gain ?? !! 🙂
box is about 2 cubes and the port is about 4" wide and 6" long.
Onkyo SKW-100 Subwoofers Reviews
id like to build a much better box for it, using the same amplifier and driver.
and see how good it can be made to sound as an HT sub. low/medium volume only, only needs to get down to 30hz ( i dont care to much about the odd movie 20 and 16 hz material)
ive never built a T-line, is it as simple as a looooooooong box with the taper expanding evenly, and the flare opening behind the driver? (cant be that simple right, there has to be some math involved to make the front and rear wave match?
or just a small sealed box ?
anyone feeling creative/inspired?

+1 on T/S. Time to get the kit together impedance measure kit. Before i got Fuzzmeasure i used the reciepe on Brian's diysubwoofers.org site.

I looked around online to see if I could find information about that driver. According to the service manual for the subwoofer, the driver is an "Eastech FSWA080-312". The company that makes it is Welcome to EASTERN ASIA TECHNOLOGY LIMITED
Perhaps they can give you some information about it, I couldn't find much searching.

i dont have any way to measure the TS 🙁
i suppose i could buy one of these one day?

Do you have a multimeter than can measure voltage and current?
Do you have access to a 4 ohm resistor?
Do you have a computer with a sound card?
Do you have access to an amplifier?
Then you have all you need to to measure Fs, Qes, Qms and Qts.
To measure Vas, you'll need access to a box of some sort. The existing enclosure might work. Any enclosure that can present a small and measurable sealed volume to the driver should work. I've used buckets, saucepans..
dog food cans....
LOL!
Not for measuring t/s parameters though - they're too small for most subwoofer drivers .. 🙂
I didn't know until recently that Eastech is one of the largest manufacturers of drivers in the world. IIRC their product repackaged under assorted names has retail sales in excess of 80 billion USD a year. Who knew?
Chris has Eastech woofers in his HT subs. I'm trying to get a pair back from Jesse for a tubular woofer project.

Honestly,
too much room for error on my part.
id hate to spend time, money and effort building a sub, only to realize a 18db peak @ 41hz,
being 1/8 inch off with my skill saw has no such ill effect 😀

now that's an understatement... 😉
Onix Rocket UFW-12HR Subwoofer
seems like it has a history of problems, but there is one for sale near me cheep. with the upgraded (hot rod) driver and amp (reason for selling is the amp develops problems at higher volumes, but ok at lower volumes)
shall i avoid it completely,
or does anyone know something that makes this sub a worthwhile 'try' ?? (fix amp/new amp in same box, good driver, cut the box up and make a birdhouse)?
