10F/8424 & RS225-8 FAST / WAW Ref Monitor

Daggar Audio Cones

I did purchase several cones to test before building the FAST TLs. The flexible vinyl ones seem to be the "deadest" when I drum on them with a wood spoon (Very Scientific). When you cover the regular thin 9" plastic cone with bytul on the outside and 1/2 thick melamine sponges on the inside, it works great: completely dead. That's what we used on the FAST TLs.

XRK has told me that there is a significant advantage to a five sided pyramid, so I'm just going to build those out of 1/2" wood in the future. Should we be designing a 5 side pyramid for 3D Printing?

Here are the Vinyl ones I tested and the plastic ones I used.

9" Thin Plastic Cone

Years ago I did a study on the differences between a open ended short TL vs a sealed Dagger and the measurements did not show anything and the listening tests did not show any improvement. It might be that the cone does not move enough to matter. On the RS225, it needs real movement and also, the cone is thin aluminum which might require-transmit back reflections easier than damped fiberglass.

I'm ordering a few drivers from SBA's local distributor.

Since it is really hard and expensive to get some RS225 to my place, I've figured the best alternative is the 5x8" racetrack woofer from SBA.
It sims quite well in a MLTL, pretty close to the RS225 in fact, and I have to figure out which FR will go under... either the SB65, or the B80, both of which I have and love listening to.

My only regret is the distributor doesn't have the new 4" coax from SBA... looks interesting.

That's the plan. Put the woofer vertical, and choose between the SB65 or the B80.
When crossed high enough, they should provide distortion-free music just as well.
The racetrack style is growing on me! 🙂

I like the B80 for vocals, but the SB65 is so killer with stringed and woodwind instrument, it's mesmerizing.

Just opened a box of one.
Nice packaging.

Very nice looking driver.
It is, in size, right between the SB65 and the 10F/B80/TC9.

The specs right out of the box differ a little, but I will start breaking them in and see if that changes over time.

no holes....
But the wiring tabs are mounted each side, so it should make some nice clean wiring for a line array.

I just had fun and put one in a test sealed box, and another on OB.

Fun driver, lively, yet controlled. Good details.
I prefer the sound coming from the OB, it feels like the driver is free to do its thing, while the sealed box sounds a little stuffed.

I have yet to make measurements.
